Pukka's Story So Far
You never get a second chance to make a first impression, so when Pukka started out they gave their name careful consideration. ‘Pukka’ was perfect.

Translated from Hindi to mean ‘authentic’, ‘genuine’ or, more colloquially, ‘top-quality’, ‘Pukka’ epitomises all that they represent – their ethos, ambition and everything they create.

Started with little finance, but plenty of passion, they’ve grown Pukka on their beliefs in ayurveda – the ancient Indian art of living wisely – and the incredible health benefits of organic herbs.

As they grow, Pukka's reliance on nature increases. With this in mind, Pukka respect their relationship with the land by using herbs from organic and sustainable sources, enjoying long-term and fair-trade bonds with their suppliers. Pukka is proud to say that all their herbs and products are certified organic by the Soil Association and the USDA and can all be traced back to the field in which they were grown. Pukka makes regular visits to the farmers they work with to learn from as well as educate them. Like all relationships, it’s a two-way thing.

Throughout their journey, the huge support Pukka has received from their customers has encouraged Pukka to stay true to their roots and vision. Pukka is still as passionate about sharing the wonders of organic herbs as they were when the seeds of Pukka were first sown.

That passion just gets stronger with time.

Founders – Sebastian Pole and Tim Westwell – were brought together by a mutual interest in promoting wellbeing.
Sebastian was a qualified practitioner in ayurveda and Chinese and Western herbal medicine and an avid herb grower. He loved herbal teas and realised that there was a need for innovative herbal teas that tasted delicious.

Fate intervened in 2002 when Tim placed an advert in a local magazine asking, ‘Do you want to grow business in a healthy way?’ There was just one response. It came from Seb. Together they set up Pukka Herbs, working initially from Tim’s spare room.

Today there are 40 Pukka People shaping their herbal passion into the future. The rest, as they say, is history.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Are Pukka herbal teas safe to drink during pregnancy?
Yes, Pukka teas are safe to drink during pregnancy.

Is it safe for children to drink Pukka herbal teas?
Pukka does not recommend their teas to any child under 1 year old without the advice of a practitioner. This is just a precautionary principle as the herbs can be safely used by anyone but as children’s immune systems are still immature, Pukka recommends that you take the advice of a practitioner after a face-to-face meeting

Can I drink Pukka teas that have licorice in them if I have high blood pressure?
Essentially, Yes. All problems ever associated with licorice have been from eating excessive licorice candy sweets. There is a consensus amongst experts that a safe level of licorice consumption for most people is at least 2.5g per day. The ‘culprit’ is considered to be one of licorice’s compounds known as Glycyrrhizic acid (GA) that can cause renal sodium retention leading to increased blood pressure in some individuals. The ‘safe’ amount of 2.5g per day is arrived at by determining that consuming about 100mg/day of GA avoids any blood pressure effects. The typical GA content of licorice is in the range of about 4% for Glycyrrhiza glabra (European licorice). As the highest percentage of licorice in any of Pukka's teas is 25% (Licorice and Cinnamon tea) and the herbs in the teabag weigh a total of 2g, it means that you would have to take 5 cups a day of Licorice and Cinnamon tea to be near to consuming 2.5g of licorice a day and arriving at the 100mg threshold. All of Pukka's other teas have less licorice.

Are Pukka products gluten free?
Yes, all Pukka products are gluten free.

Are Pukka products vegetarian or vegan?
All Pukka products are vegetarian. Chywanaprash contains honey and ghee (clarified butter). Ghee contains ghee! (Made from organic milk).

Are Pukka teas loose or in bags?
They come in teabags that are sealed in an individual envelope… perfectly convenient for taking to work, on holiday or wherever you go!

About Pukka Herbs

You never get a second chance to make a first impression, so when we started out we gave our name careful consideration. 'Pukka' was perfect.

Translated from Hindi to mean 'authentic', 'genuine' or, more colloquially, 'top-quality', 'Pukka' epitomizes all that we represent – our ethos, ambition and everything we create.

Started with little finance, but plenty of passion, we've grown Pukka on our beliefs in Ayurveda – the ancient Indian art of living wisely – and the incredible health benefits of organic herbs.

At the centre of Pukka are our founders – Tim Westwell and Sebastian Pole – who were brought together by a mutual interest in promoting wellbeing. Sebastian was a qualified practitioner in Ayurveda and Chinese and Western herbal medicine and an avid herb grower. He loved herbal teas and realized that there was a gap in the market for high quality and delicious teas, but he needed a partner with some green-business acumen.  And he came along in 2002 when Tim placed an advert in a local paper asking, 'Do you want to grow business in a healthy way?' and Sebastian was the only person to reply. The rest, as they say, is history.

For the first year, Pukka grew slowly and steadily from Tim's spare bedroom on the outskirts of Bristol. It wasn't long before interest grew, and now, nine years later, we have over 30 members of staff and continue to develop. Needless to say, we've moved out of the spare room!

As we grow, our reliance on nature increases. With this in mind, we respect our relationship with the land by using herbs from organic and sustainable sources, enjoying long-term and fair-trade bonds with our suppliers. We are proud to say that all our herbs and products are certified organic by the Soil Association and the USDA and can all be traced back to the field in which they were grown.  We make regular visits to the farmers we work with to learn from as well as educate them. Like all relationships, it's a two-way thing.

The old saying 'mighty oaks from acorns grow', suits the way in which we've developed over the years. Two people's passion has grown into a company with award-winning organic herbal teas and food supplements that make a positive difference to people's lives.

Throughout our journey, the huge support we've received from our customers has encouraged us to stay true to our roots and vision. We're still as passionate about sharing the wonders of organic herbs as we were when the seeds of Pukka were first sown.

That passion just gets stronger with time.

We hope you'll continue to enjoy your Pukka experience just as much as we do.

With warm wishes
