    Frequently Asked Questions

Is bathing really better than taking a shower?
Yes. Soaking in hot water for an extended period of time has been proven to have many benefits - when combined with bath salts the benefits are even greater. Bathing, when done properly, can lead to softer skin, a better night's sleep, lower blood pressure, and is a treatment for many skin conditions

I've started taking baths more often, but a friend told me that when you soak, you're "bathing" in your own dirt. Is this true?
No. Once bacteria, dirt and toxins are lifted out of your body, they will not go back in. When you bathe in warm water, your pores open. When you add high-quality bath salts, toxins are pulled out and drawn from your pores. You'll notice a ring around your tub - this is a good thing! That is the evidence of what has left your body - and it will stay out for good.

Okay, so now I have a ring around my tub. How can I avoid this?
You cannot avoid it - and again, when it comes to your body, it means you are now clean. All that dirt and grime has been drawn out of your skin and won't return. The easiest way to clean the sides of your tub are to gently scrub the surface while water is still in the tub - don't drain the tub and let it dry, and don't wait a few days before cleaning it. Step out of the tub, grab a sponge, and let the water and the pressure remove the stain.

They say  that bathing is a "fountain of youth". Why wouldn't taking a shower have the same effect?
Showers tend to be rushed and you're not in a "relaxed" position when you take a shower - you're standing. If you take a shower, it takes about 8-10 minutes and the only goal of a shower is to get clean. Bathing for 20-30 minutes can improve your circulation and lower your blood pressure. Also, bathing actually effects the elasticity and overall health of your skin - bathing in bath salts has been shown, over time, to diminish the appearance of fine lines and even cellulite. Besides the numerous cosmetic benefits, bathing greatly lowers your stress level. Nothing ages us faster than stress.

Is it safe to take sea salt baths everyday?
Yes, taking sea salt baths everyday is actually beneficial to you. 10-20 minutes is enough each day to maintain soft & beautiful vibrant skin

What are the benefits of aromatherapy oils?
Studies about essential oils, or aromatherapy oils, have shown that certain oils have many healing and therapeutic qualities such as antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties to soothes cuts and burns. Many essential oils also have a calming effect which makes it a very wonderful stress reliever.

Do I have to bathe with bath salts, or can I just use bath and shower gel?
Bath and shower gels can be nice - they smell good and can soften your skin. Bath salts, however, are a must if you want a truly therapeutic bath. Raw bath salts can be combined with scents, essential oils, and herbs - and they contain a vast array of minerals and nutrients. Your shower gel probably doesn't

You mean, I can use bath salt in ways other than in a bath?
Absolutely!! Their salts can be used as scrubs, exfolliants, or as an addition to a mud pack or mask. The finer grain salts tend to be better for mixing. For instance, you can take a handful of their salts and mix it with a handful of body wash and scrub your skin gently, sloughing off dead skin and dirt to leave it soft and clean.

Is it safe for bath salts to be used in Jacuzzi?
YES, Bath salts are safe to used in the Jacuzzi so long as they are dissolved completely so that it won't interfere with the mechanics of the Jacuzzi. Fine or medium grain is the best choice for Jacuzzis.

Am I allergic to bath salts? How will I know?
If the ingredients of the bath salt is 100% natural, then there is a very little chance of being allergic to it. To be sure if you're not allergic to it, then simply soak a small part of your body, e.g. your hands to it to see if any allergic reaction occurs.

How long before bath salts expire?
Salt does not expire. However Bath salt with colors and fragrances may fade over time. Shelf life for colored/scented bath salts is typically 1-2 years. Shelf life for raw natural salt is millions of years.

How can I store my bulk bath salts?
You can store bath salts in an airtight container or bag. Keep the bath salts from direct sunlight.

Can I use bath salts during pregnancy?
They recommend consulting your doctor first before using bath salts or taking a bath while pregnant.

What kind of coloring do you use in your bath salts?
They use a specially formulated FD&C food coloring that is very safe for bathing. They keep their colors on the light side and generally the coloring is less than one quarter of one percent of the formula.

Will the colored salts color my water?
Yes, they will give them a nice light tint that is not too overpowering.

What are the basic benefits of bath salts?
Bath salts help heal cuts, burns, wounds, and insect bites. The minerals found in the salts are absorbed through the skin which is essential to the bodies' functions. Bath salts also flush out harmful toxins from the body and is a good stress reliever. It also exfoliates the skin, leaving the skin smooth and supple.

    About Salt
Sodium chloride (salt) is the chemical compound NaCl. Composed of the elements sodium and chloride it is one of the most basic molecules on earth. Salt is so simple and plentiful that we almost take it for granted. Approx. 68% of the world's surface is covered by the world's oceans and seas. Ocean water is approx. 3.5% salt concentration. That means that if the oceans dried up completely, enough salt would be left behind to build a 180-mile-tall, one-mile-thick wall around the equator!
Salt also occurs naturally in many parts of the world as the mineral halite (rock salt).

There are three basic types of salt: rock salt, evaporated salt and solar salt

    Rock Salt
Deep underground deposits are conventionally mined by drilling and blasting to produce rock salt.

    Evaporation
Salt water, or brine, is boiled under a partial vacuum with steam heat, in enclosed vessels called vacuum pans. The brine is purified and fed to large evaporators where salt crystallizes in to granulated salt.

    Solar Evaporation
Solar salt is produced through the natural evaporation of sea water. Salt water is captured in shallow ponds and allowed to evaporate by means of the sun and wind. The typical solar crop takes from one to five years to produce.

Virtually all food grade salt sold or used in the United States is produced by vacuum evaporation of brine. However, prior to mechanical evaporation, the brine may be treated to remove minerals that can cause scaling in the evaporators. Chemical treatment of the brine, followed by settling, reduces levels of dissolved calcium, magnesium and sulfate.

In addition, these are the very minerals we want our body to absorb when we bath in bath salts. That's why at the San Francisco Bath Salt Company they only use pure, unadulterated solar salt.

Purity of salt produced in North America varies depending on the type of salt the source. Rock salt typically ranges between 95% and 99% NaCl, and mechanically evaporated salt and solar salt normally exceed 99% NaCl. The principal other ingredients in solar salt are calcium and magnesium sulfate, and magnesium chloride.

At the San Francisco Bath Salt Company they only use natural solar salts that retain as much of the natural minerals as possible.

Their salt comes from a long tradition of salt making along the shores of the San Francisco Bay, using sunlight and wind to slowly concentrate and crystallize the natural salt carried by the Bay's waters.

    History of Salt Bathing
Approximately 2,700 years B.C. there was published in China the PENG-TZAO-KAN-MU, probably the earliest known treatise on pharmacology. A major portion of this writing was devoted to a discussion of more than 40 kinds of salt, including methods of extracting salt and putting it in usable form.

From ancient civilizations to today, salt and the sea has been associated with health and therapy.

Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, was the first one to detail the benefits of using sea water to cure various ailments. He encouraged his fellow healers to immerse patients with aching muscles and arthritis in sea water. The ancient Greeks continued this thinking by soaking in sea water hot tubs and heated seaweed bath's, they drank and inhaled sea water for health, got sea water massages, had sea green facials and body wraps, and used sea water pools for hydrotherapy and elimination of toxins from the body.

Then came the Romans, who raised bathing to a high art. Roman citizens lingered for hours in communal hot baths, where they socialized, conducted courtship, and even sealed business deals. They built lavish baths wherever they found natural hot springs.

In Europe in 1753, The Uses of Sea Water was published by English author and physician Charles Russel, who discussed the various therapeutic properties of seawater. Once people started hearing about the curative properties of sea water, they began flocking to the coasts, especially to Great Britain and France. Marine hospitals opening up in England and France. The first French marine hospital, Petit Berck, opened in 1861. In 1865 Joseph La Bonardière coined the term thalassotherapy (from the Greek thalassa for "sea" and therapeia for "care"). Then in 1899 Louis Bagot started balneotherapie (bath therapy) treatments at the Institut Marin de Rockroum. This was the first true thalassotherapy clinic in Europe.

During the next several hundred years, doctors and scientists began studying what it was that made sea water beneficial for so many ailments

The Roman reverence for bathing has survived today in modern upscale spas and resorts were various bathing and sea therapies are used to reduce tension and stress, detoxify the skin and improve circulation, speed weight loss and cellulite control, and even ease menopausal discomforts. In Japan a highly ritualized bathing culture has evolved. Whole towns exist as destination resorts around Japanese natural hot springs and visits to the local communal hot tub are an everyday occurrence.

Modern Thalassotherapy uses sea water treatments with the goal of improving health, fitness, well being and beauty. At San Francisco Salt Company they endeavor to make these treatments accessible to everyone by providing you with the Spa therapy products for use in your own home.

    Sea Salt - Natures Exfoliator
Sea salt is a wonderful ingredient in any bath, and they know there are many benefits to using sea salt as a bath salt. Sea salt contains a variety minerals and nutrients that benefit our bodies, particularly our skin. It can transform an otherwise ordinary bath into a powerful tonic which nourishes, invigorates and detoxifies.

Sea salt is wonderful when simply dissolved in water and used as a soak, but many people don’t know that sea salt is an incredibly effective exfoliator. That’s right - sea salt gently cleanses pores and helps slough off dead skin, revealing the softer, healthier skin underneath.

Exfoliation is a must for healthy, attractive skin. Dead skin cells typically cover our bodies, as skin cells die and are reborn constantly. This lifeless outer layer can give your skin a dull, lifeless appearance and can even make us look older by accentuating the cracks on the skin’s surface. When you exfoliate, you remove the outer layers of dead epidermis (skill) cells. People use a variety of exfoliation techniques, including the use of sea and loofah sponges, oatmeal, pumice, ground nuts and seeds, and, yes - sea salt.

When you use sea salt as a scrub prior to or during a bath, the benefits of bathing actually increase. As you gently scrub, your skin becomes stimulated as your circulation improves. Your pores open and are ready to absorb all the wonderful minerals and nutrients in your bath. You can add essential oils, fragrances, and herbs to your bath salts to make your scrub even more beneficial.

You can even combine bath salts with bath gel to make your own unique exfoliating cleanser to use either in the bath or in the shower (of course, they prefer the bath, but if you’re in a pinch, bath salts will work in the shower too). Find a fragrant bath gel of your choice with a rich lather and pour some into a new bottle (or even a bowl). Add a handful of bath salts to your bath gel and stir/shake until the salts are blended in. Presto! You’ve got your own custom exfoliating cleanser.

Exfoliation can be done every time you take a bath. Before you bathe gently “brush” your dead skin with a washcloth or loofah. Do this very gently and be sure not to overdo it. Once you are in the tub, pour some bath salts into the palm of your hand. Rub the salt gently into your skin, take your time and cover every inch of your body. If you made your own exfoliating bath gel, simply squeeze or pour some into the palm of your hand and clean your body using small circular motions.

Remember, you are using salt - be sure to shave ahead of time (in other words, don’t rub salt into an open wound). Also, a word of caution to those with sensitive skin - be extremely gentle and try and use salt of a fine grain, which is less abrasive than larger grain salts.

Try it! Your skin will feel incredibly clean, soft, and be left with a vibrant glow.
