About Tiesta Tea

Tiesta Tea is a story about four friends who have put their complete faith in loose-leaf tea, and how this all-natural necessity has never steered them wrong.

From childhood friends to a wild weekend in Prague, they never thought tea would be their calling. It was in some tiny Czech teahouse that they got hooked on loose-leaf tea. Three months later, they started making their own. Their professors and parents thought they were nuts, but a couple friends believed in them, blending tea in exchange for pizza and beer. They’re a tight knit crew that keeps it simple; all-natural loose-leaf tea blends with real fruits and herbs. They tell you what matters: what it does for you, what it tastes like, and how to make it. So what’s stopping you? Get rid of those boring ol’ tea bags and dive in, because once you get loose, you’ll never go bagged.

    Brewing Tea 101

    Brewing Tea Hot

    • Step 1: Scoop
A recommended amount of loose tea you’ll want to scoop is about 1.5 tsp for every 8 ounces of water. If you enjoy a rich, stronger tasting tea, don’t be afraid to let that scoop reach the bottom of the bag and repeat.
    • Step 2: Steep
It’s time to start brewing your loose tea leaves. Each tea type is brewed at a different time and temperature. If you’re not familiar with how long you should let your tea steep, refer to the Temps & Times section at the top of this page for a chart of tea types and their brewing instructions.
    • Step 3: Escape
After you’ve poured in your water and let your tea steep, it’s time to remove the loose tea leaves and enjoy the delicious health benefits of all- natural loose tea. Remember, brewing tea is an art form! There is no right or wrong way to do this, so keep trying different methods of steeping and continue to discover the amazing benefits of loose leaf tea.

    Brewing Tea Iced

    • Step 1: Scoop Double
When brewing iced tea, you’ll want to steep a stronger, more concentrated tea. The recommended amount of loose leaf tea is 3 tsp for every 8 oz of water. It may take some tweaking to get the taste you desire, but that’s half the fun!
    • Step 2: Steep
Now that you’ve tossed in double the amount of loose tea, brewing iced tea is identical to brewing a hot cup of tea. Just follow the recommended “Times & Temps” chart above. Make sure to remove your loose tea leaves at the recommended time, to make sure your tea leaves don’t burn.
    • Step 3: Escape
Remove your loose tea leaves and pour over ice. Your tea concentrate should melt the ice and dilute down to a full flavored iced tea. You may need to add extra ice to the hot tea to accelerate the cool down process.

    Tips & Tricks

    • Makeshift Filter
If you ever find yourself without a loose tea brewer, don’t panic! Chances are, something you can use to infuse your tea is within reach. You may just have to get a little creative. One of the most practical choices is using an everyday coffee filter. Just scoop your loose tea into an empty coffee filter and tie shut the top with string or twine (anything that will stay uncompromised by boiling water). This process can be applied to anything that will allow water to seep in and steep your loose tea leaves. Just make sure whatever paper towel or cloth you are using isn’t treated by any sort of chemicals.
    • Reusable Kcup
The ease of tossing in a cup and pushing a button has allowed single serve brewing machines to find their rightful place on the countertops of kitchens all across the globe. This extremely simple process can be used to brew your loose tea leaves as well! All you need is a reusable K-Cup. Just scoop in your loose tea leaves, pour in some water, push the button and voilá! Your cup of all natural loose leaf tea is ready to go!
    • Cool Down
When it comes to brewing loose tea leaves, the most common question seems to always be “How do I know what temperature my water is?” Here is a tip to help make your brewing experience easier. First, bring the water to a boil. As soon as your water maintains a steady “roll”, the temperature will generally be around 208 degrees Fahrenheit. If the instructions call for 195 degree water like in black tea or oolong tea, just add an average sized ice cube for every 16 oz. of water. If your tea calls for 175 degree water, add two ice cubes for every 16 oz. This works wonders if you don’t have a thermometer.
    • Resteep
Steep your loose tea leaves again and again. When tea leaves are resteeped, they often release more flavor and nutrients the second, third or even fourth time steeped.
      • White teas become slightly sweeter with each resteep.
      • Green teas, especially ones tightly wound or twisted, often taste better after the first or second steep.
      • Oolong teas often reveal more character nuances every resteep.
      • Most herbal and fruit teas provide the most flavor on the first steep. The second one can still be pretty good though!
    • A Little Lemon
The next time you’re looking for something to add a little flavor to your cup of tea, grab a fresh lemon. A little squeeze of a ripe lemon not only adds a refreshing splash of citrus, it also reveals some of the more subtle flavor nuances hiding in your cup of loose tea.
