Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I buy Green Babies™ baby body care?
They developed this line to meet or exceed the Whole Foods Market™ Premium Body Care standards which are amongst the most stringent out there. Guided by the precautionary principle their products were formulated to perfection by their brilliant chemist to be safe and pure for babies. And because they understand your baby is the most precious person on the planet, they choose to never shortcut or shortchange their ingredients. After years of research and loads of testing on babies' bottoms, they are thrilled to introduce their newest addition, the wallet-friendly, Green Babies baby body care line for your newest addition.
Where are the Green Babies™ body care products made?
Their products are manufactured in Canada.
Are your products hypoallergenic?
Hypoallergenic cosmetics are products that produce fewer allergic reactions than other cosmetic products. Green Babies was designed with babies in mind to contain no potentially irritating substances. All their formulas have been clinically tested to be non-irritating to the skin.
Are Green Babies™ products gluten free?
People who have celiac disease or gluten allergy choose products that are gluten free especially those applied close to the lips and above the chin. Even though absorption of gluten through cosmetics and personal care products is minimal, persons suffering from this disorder are best served by avoiding products that contain gluten.
Although their product does not contain gluten, they cannot guarantee that all of the products manufactured in their facility also do not contain gluten. However, given their cleaning procedures and the material controls that are in place, the possibility of cross contamination is nil.
Are Green Babies™ products tear-free?
Yes, Green Babies™ baby care products have been vetted by third-party independent labs to be “non-stinging” to the eyes.
Does Green Babies™ test on animals?
No, they do not perform any testing on animals.

Are Green Babies™ using 100% natural, fragrances in their products?
Yes, they only use 100% natural fragrances in their products. They do not use nature-identical or synthetic fragrances in any of their formulas.
What is a “natural fragrance”?
All ingredients are directly derived from the natural source vie extraction, distillation or mechanical means. No ingredient is ‘created or synthesized’ via a chemical reaction of any kind.
Why does Green Babies™ use alcohol in their detangler and lotion? Isn't that drying?
They get asked this question all the time and it stems from the confusion about the word "alcohol" in everyday use and "alcohol" as a chemical term. When used as a chemical term (as they do in their ingredient lists) - alcohol means that the chemical has an -OH at the end of the molecule.
Alcohols such as ethanol (the alcohol in beverages) or isopropanol (rubbing alcohol) are low molecular weight, liquid solvents and dry out the skin and hair.
Cetearyl Alcohol (which is the ingredient in their detangler and lotion) is a high molecular weight solid. It is a waxy conditioning material found naturally in many vegetable products and functions to hold moisture to skin and hair - not to remove water. It makes the hair soft, smooth, easy to comb, protects the hair from sun damage and exposure to free radicals which can damage the hair. It does the same for skin where it has a soft luxurious feel and helps keep the skin soft and supple.
How are Green Babies™ reducing their environmental footprint?
Green Babies bottles utilize post-consumer recycled materials to reduce packaging consumption. Their bottles are made from a minimum of 50% post-consumer recycled (PCR) high-density polyethylene.
Why Safe Body Care?
It's hard not to be seduced by the promises and luxurious feeling of a new face cream or body care product. But did you know that the face cream and body lotions and bubble baths you are using might actually be toxic to you and could be pure poison to your baby?
Toxic beauty products are not new, European aristocrats applied powdered lead to their faces, and Victorian beauties smeared their faces with creams laced with arsenic - and of course those ingredients are banned, but they have others that merit a closer look. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) does not oversee the safety of most ingredients in cosmetics. Of the 88,000 chemicals used in today's body care and cosmetics, only about 600 have ever been tested for safety.
The most important people in the world are also the ones who should be the most discerning about what they choose to use. By important they mean expectant moms and new and growing babies. As we now know, toxic ingredients that don't appear to effect the mother at all can cross the placental wall and have negative, even disastrous effects on developing babies.
When you're expecting, please read cosmetics as if you were eating them, because in a very real way you are. The skin is the body's largest organ. The Chinese call the skin the third lung because of what it takes in. If this seems hard to believe, consider the effectiveness of the nicotine patch.
With this vulnerability in mind, don't worry, they've got you covered after baby is born. After years of dreaming and development, here comes Green Babies body care. Truly natural, with certified organic botanicals, food grade preservatives, scents that come directly from nature.
Count on Green Babies for ZERO:
- petroleum by-products
- synthetic fragrances
- eye irritants
- animal testing
They take the privilege of being a part of your love and caring for your baby very seriously. They envision a world that is safe and nurturing and truly natural. They hope you'll agree the efficacy and luxury of this line is unsurpassed. Please join us in making all babies Green Babies.
The Green Babies Story
Green Babies est. 1994
THE GREEN DREAM in the beginning
Children bring all kinds of wonderful gifts with them when they enter the world. When Lynda and Hossein Fassa's first child, Layla, was born, she brought them a whole new perspective on everything; from their lack of foresight as to how many diapers they'd need to pack for an afternoon on the town, (at least eight), to the true nature of reality and their place in it, (haven't figured that one out yet!).
As part of finding their way with her, Lynda left a career in the fashion industry where she was promoting products and ideas for women, and men, that she didn't want for her own daughter.
Lynda started Green Babies with a simple idea:
That every baby is wonderful and deserves the best, most comfortable, cutest, most well constructed, softest, irritant-free clothes. (Without breaking Mom and Dad's budget!)
She began by sewing and screen-printing the first Green Babies during her baby's nap time. She sold quite a few 'basics' to friends. As they got more stylin', she strapped Layla into her sling and they took samples around to stores and started taking orders! It was exhilarating! Soon Lynda had more orders than her old Singer could keep up with and after looking long and hard, they found a bright, airy, family owned and operated factory to sew for them.
They learned a lot during this time! They owe so much to the Moms and caregivers who tried and tested their samples and fabrics those first seasons. That knowledge and insight was so valuable to their success. Mom's do know best, (and Dads, too!); Their good garments got better and better.
Movin' On Up
Green Babies packing and shipping department (that is, Lynda and her friends at the kitchen table) was really squeezing them out of their city loft. At the same time, they were expanding their family, with the birth of their second daughter, Mina. Fortunately, Hossein stepped in and took over the job of COO (Chief Organic Officer) and they found a beautiful turn-of-the century house, big enough for them and Green Babies (they thought!), in the rustic Hudson River Valley, just north of New York City. (Rip Van Winkle and Ichabod Crane territory.)
Nature spoke to them from the geese overhead and the woods up the street, and they felt the clothes were richer for it. they were shipping their clothes to stores all over the US and even the world! Lynda would run along up the street and wait for UPS with a kid on her hip and one doing homework on the warehouse floor. Oh yeah, and one in the oven, too.
They're Organically Growing
Their third beautiful baby, Nadia, was born. Finally their family was complete.
Although looking back it might sound like a blur of new babies and business, somehow they were able to stay grounded and keep it going. They always came back to their mission of providing the safest options for the most important people in the world--babies!
The digital revolution made life easier for them. They had one of the first retail 'green' sites online and were immediately lauded as "One of the Top Ten Mom and Pops on the Web" by MSNBC. InStyle Magazine recognized them as one of the top 100 gift sites on the web.
They kept innovating their clothes and began to offer wooden toys and rattles. It's all part of their focus on the next generation and their hopes that their world would be harmonious and beautiful and green.
Green Babies, Sage Moms
Because their vision includes education and interaction with parents everywhere, I decide to write a book to help new and expectant mothers (and dads) avoid potential toxins and embrace the positive differences real green choices can make to all our kids health and safety. Lynda's first book, Green Babies Sage Moms hit the stores Jan 3rd 2008. They had tremendous help from scientists, pediatricians and natural product experts for content in this groundbreaking book. This was the fist consumer book to talk about questionable safety in cosmetics, BPA, phthalates and triclosan. The universe was ready for the message that natural is better. Lynda appeared in People Magazine, the TODAY Show, New York Daily News, Fox News, Access Hollywood and more.
2009 saw the release of the second in the book series, Green Kids, Sage Families. Organic and safe choices don't need to be just for the wealthy or just for babies! They continued their happy relationship with Whole Foods Market and many many supportive mom and pop stores. With their babies rapidly growing up (they are now 11, 14 and 17!), they decided they were ready for a new adventure, and in the Fall of 2009 they opened their first free standing Green Babies retail store. They moved their packing and shipping behind a beautiful sunny space in historic destination town Nyack, NY. This town was famous for many good reasons, the great American painter Edward Hopper was born and did many of his most famous paintings here.
Lotion Potions and Tushy Tonics
Coming next? A dream 5 years in the making, Green Babies body care--the safest, cleanest line in the world! No kidding, zero petroleum products, no sulfates (SLS), the BEST all natural botanical scent and a price that beats any other truly natural line out there.
Please know that they would never make, sell or promote anything for your baby that they wouldn't use on their own children. Together they can embrace this beautiful future they're creating today. Their children are their greatest investment and their greatest reward.
They know that the most important baby in the world is the one you're thinking about. They hope you'll consider making them a Green Baby.
The Green Babies Mission
Green Babies, Inc. is a New York state corporation founded in 1994, to develop, manufacture and market environmentally friendly products and to provide consumers with natural choices that are sustainable, have a minimal environmental footprint and are made with fair wage labor.
Welcome to Planet Earth, Green Babies…
They know that baby is a most welcomed member of the family. And whether her arrival brings your family’s total number to two or six, life with a young child in the house changes everything, so it really helps, to have some help.
They kept this in mind when developing their Green Babies Standards. They want to provide a trusted place where you don’t have to guess if what you’re choosing for baby is safe. They begin with the presupposition that the health, safety and wellbeing of your baby is of the utmost importance. Their philosophy is that natural is better. They believe prudence is the wisest guideline when it comes to babies and children because it can sometimes take years for the effects of questionable chemicals and ingredients to come to light. So, though they welcome meaningful innovation, they also strive to embrace products that are tried and true because their first criteria is proven safety.
In addition to this, they make an effort to consider the big picture of any products that they carry because they also recognize that baby lives in this one world that we all inhabit. Therefore, they want to help you ensure baby’s surroundings are healthy and environmentally sound, in part because of the safe products they offer for him. Every item they bring to market has been reviewed and approved by an advisory panel of parents and caregivers for its usefulness and efficacy. They aspire to think sustainably; Who made the product? Under what conditions? How useful is it? How far did it travel? What will happen to it when I’m done? Any or all of these questions may be applied when they’re considering products to offer for your child.
So that is the overall intention driving the development of their standards. Here’s a look at the standards individually with specific related thoughts on each of them:
Green Babies' Standards
All of their baby body care products are formulated from the highest quality natural ingredients to be the purest and gentlest for your baby. They avoid synthetic fragrances, which may contain phthalates, preservatives such as parabens, surfactants such as sodium laureth sulfate, and chemical sunscreens. They also exclude suspected endocrine disruptors, and ingredients produced using nanotechnology.
They developed their body care based on the Whole Foods Market Premium Body Care Standards. Premium Body Care Standards were developed to give trustworthy meaning to the confusing labels on body care and cosmetics. Although the words “natural” and “organic” are comforting, when it comes to body care they are often misused and sometimes actually meaningless. For the time being, manufacturers in the US are able to put just about any claim they like on body care and cosmetics without any federal overview. Even educated consumers have difficulty discerning the truly green from the merely greenwashed. From their perspective, a standard of truly safe body care could never be more important than it is for expectant mothers and young babies. Therefore all of their baby body care products meet or exceed Whole Foods Market’s Premium Body Care Standards. Amazingly, what you put on your body, you put in your body. Up to 60% of what you put on your skin gets absorbed into the bloodstream. (If in doubt, consider the nicotine patch.) So the previously unregulated synthetic fragrances, high powered preservatives, including parabens, and harsh surfactants in conventional body care can potentially become part of baby’s body burden, a mix of chemicals stored in the body’s tissues and organs. High tech micronization like nanotechnology mean these chemicals can absorb more quickly and deeper into the skin than ever before. They believe that the soaps, lotions and shampoos you chose are a very special part of taking loving care of your child. They want you to feel secure in the products they offer for your baby, so they’ve sifted out the known and suspected chemical offenders and left only the finest ingredients in their baby body care. They take great joy in offering safer solutions to pampering baby’s precious skin. Natural fragrances compliment baby’s already sweet smell for parents and caregivers, and at the same time for baby, encourage a pleasing entryway into the great world of the senses.
All their cotton clothing, accessories, mattresses and bedding are made with certified organic cotton and are free of chemical flame retardants. All closures on clothing and diapers are lead and nickel free.
They’ve made a commitment to organic cotton because it’s an easy way to ensure a cleaner world for all babies to grow up in. Conventionally grown cotton takes a heavy toll on the environment taking up only 3% of the Earth’s farmland, but utilizing up to 25% of the world’s chemical pesticides and fertilizers. In contrast, organic cotton directly contributes to cleaner land and water, because it’s grown without any pesticides, and is rotated with other crops, to keep soil naturally fertile and active. So, by choosing even a tiny baby garment made from organic cotton you are helping expedite the shift to a much more sustainable and just world. They’ve also chosen to avoid the use of powerful chemical flame retardants in their mattresses. In some studies these flame retardants, pentaBDEs (pBDEs), have been shown to have very detrimental effects. In fact, they are even banned in the UK and in the state of California. Because their mattresses are not derived from petroleum, but rather from organic cotton, they fully comply with Consumer Product Safety requirements for anti-flammability standards without putting your baby in such close contact with pBDEs. They also recognize that many babies are nickel sensitive. In their experience, delicate skin on baby’s legs and bottom are happier without exposure to this metal. In fact, chemical sensitivity to nickel is often a key culprit on diaper rash. Because of this, their snaps and closures on baby garments are nickel (and lead) free.
All toys, baby bottles, feeding utensils and bowls are free of the plastic compound Bisephanol-A (BPA), and phthalates, suspected endocrine disruptors.
Because babies explore the world--including their toys--with their mouths, and spend an inordinate amount of their waking hours eating and drinking, they want to be especially vigilant about just what they offer as a means of transportation of food into their little mouths. All their toys, bottles, sipper cups and eating utensils are free of Bisephanol-A (BPA) and measurable phthalates, suspected endocrine disruptors, that may act as faux estrogens, confusing the body’s subtle hormone levels. As part of their philosophy to choose the safest of all ingredients and products, they will work to avoid these chemicals in the items that baby has daily exposure to. They want baby’s journey into adulthood to be joyful and healthy, and they’ll seek out the safest options possible to ensure this is so.
They carefully choose entertainment options that enrich and empower as well as entertain
Entertainment is a huge and fulfilling part of most of our lives. They believe it should be exciting, enriching and soothing for your baby, too. They feel that baby is already the best, is right where she should be, and can continue to reach her highest potential by strengthening and expanding her connection with the significant adults in her immediate surroundings. Because of this, they seek out entertainment options that engage baby in sensory experiences including songs, games and toys that enrich their developmental stages in life, and that add to the pleasant job of parenting. In their view, childhood is a beautiful journey, to be cherished, revered and shared, and they aim to add to the excitement and joy that baby’s natural discovery brings to all of us.
Any food products they offer are certified organic, which means they are made with 95% or more certified organic ingredients and avoid genetically modified (GMO) ingredients. They are free of artificial preservatives, flavors, colors and hydrogenated oils.
Why organic for your baby? Organic means grown without pesticides. Pesticides are poisons, developed to kill hardy insects. They believe there is no one more worthy of our protection from known toxins than the very young, and they feel because of this, organic is clearly the best choice for baby’s food. Also, with organic, a strict set of principles, from planting through harvesting and transporting food ensures there are no genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Because there are no long term studies of the effects of GMOs on the humans that consume them, they opt for the ‘better safe than sorry’ ideology. Organic also ensures there is no Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH) in dairy products. Just as with GMOs, there are no long term studies of the effects of consuming rBGH dairy products, so they feel it’s only prudent to avoid them. Finally there are recent studies that suggest a link between artificial preservatives, flavors and colors and some behavioral difficulties, those with symptoms similar to ADD and ADHD. Any food products they offer are free of these unwanted additives. They are committed to organic, wholesome, healthy food choices for babies. They know that babies have a lifetime of joyful, healthful eating ahead of them and they’re happy to offer you choices that can help start them out right.
