North American Herb & Spice - OregaResp - 90 Vegetarian Capsules

OregaResp is the only multiple spice extract made with handpicked spices from remote mountain regions. OregaResp contains P73 wild oregano, high mountain sage, and cumin, with concentrated COz-extracted cinnamon and ginger powder.

    Oregano/Wild Marjoram
    Parts used and where grown

Oregano is an aromatic perennial herb that can grow to about two feet in height. It is native to the Mediterranean region but is cultivated worldwide. In addition to European oregano, there are several types of related species, including Greek/Turkish oregano (Origanum onites) and Mexican oregano (Lippia graveolens, Lippa palmeri). These should not be considered substitutes for true oregano, though they may have similar properties. The leaves as well as the volatile oil of these various species are used medicinally, but must be carefully distinguished as they are quite different.

    Historical or traditional use
The name Oreganum is the contraction of two Greek words, oros meaning mountain and ganos meaning joy. Together the words suggest the beauty that oregano lends to the fields and hilltops on which it grows. Oregano was used extensively by the Greeks for conditions ranging from convulsions to heart failure. Nineteenth-century American Eclectic physicians (doctors who recommended herbal medicines) employed oregano as both a general tonic and to promote menstruation.

    Active constituents
This dried herb contains several constituents, including volatile oil (up to 3%), such as carvacrol, thymol, and borneol, plus flavonoids, rosmarinic acid, triterpenoids (e.g. ursolic and oleanolic acid), sterols, and vitamin A and vitamin C. The thymol and carvacrol contents in oregano are responsible for its antimicrobial and antifungal effects. A test tube study demonstrated that oil of oregano, and carvacrol in particular, inhibited the growth of Candida albicans far more effectively than a commonly employed antifungal agent called calcium magnesium caprylate. Clinical studies are still needed to confirm these actions in humans.

In addition to its anti-fungal action, and according to the results of another test tube study from Australia, oregano oil has a strong anti-microbial action against a wide number of bacteria, including Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Salmonella enterica, and Staphylococcus aureus. Other test tube studies have shown that oregano from the Mexican (Lippia) species was more effective than the prescription medication tinidazol in inhibiting the parasite giardia (Giardia duodenalis). In another test tube study, volatile oils of oregano, thyme, cinnamon, and cumin were individually able to stop the growth of another food-borne pathogen called Aspergillus parasiticus. Higher concentrations of these volatile oils were also able to stop the production of aflatoxin, a potent poison from the food moldAspergillus. Together these facts suggest the volatile oils in oregano used during food processing have an important role in preventing the spoilage of food and in reducing the risk of ingesting harmful bacteria, fungi, and parasites. Again, these actions have not yet been confirmed by human clinical trials. The German Commission E does not approve oregano for any medical indication.

    How much is usually taken?
Dried or fresh leaf of oregano can be made into a tea by steeping 1 to 2 teaspoons (5 to 10 grams) in hot water for ten minutes. This tea can be consumed three times a day. The oil (50% or greater dilution) may be applied topically twice a day to areas affected by athlete’s foot or other fungal infections. The affected area should be covered by the oil with each application. The safety of the internal use of the oil has not been well studied and should be used with caution or after consulting with a healthcare professional.

Are there any side effects or interactions?
Oregano leaf is very safe. The German Commission E and American Herbal Products Association both state there are no known risks with oregano leaf; neither of these references mentions oregano oil.

Due to the lack of human research and the highly concentrated nature of oregano volatile oil, there is potential for harm from its use; therefore, until its internal use in humans has been proven safe, it should taken with caution if not recommended by a healthcare professional. Volatile oils are generally considered contraindicated in pregnancy as they likely reach the baby and may cause harm. Topically, the volatile oil of oregano may be moderately irritating to skin and can be a potent mucous membrane irritant. It should not be applied topically to mucous membranes in greater than a 1% concentration. Children less than two years of age and people with damaged or very sensitive skin should not use the oil topically.

    Sage
    Parts used and where grown
Sage is a silvery-green shrub with very fragrant leaves. The most commonly cultivated species of sage originally came from the area around the Mediterranean but now also grows in North America. The leaves of this common kitchen herb are used in medicine as well as in cooking.

    Historical or Traditional Use
Sage has one of the longest histories of use of any culinary or medicinal herb. It was used by herbalists externally to treat sprains, swelling, ulcers, and bleeding. Internally, a tea made from sage leaves has had a long history of use to treat sore throats and coughs—often used as a gargle. It was also used by herbalists for rheumatism, excessive menstrual bleeding, and to dry up a mother’s milk when nursing was stopped. It was particularly noted for strengthening the nervous system, improving memory, and sharpening the senses. Sage was officially listed in the United States Pharmacopoeia from 1840 to 1900.

    Active constituents
The volatile oil of sage contains the constituents alpha- and beta-thujone, camphor, and cineole. It also contains rosmarinic acid, tannins, and flavonoids. In modern European herbal medicine, a gargle of sage tea is commonly recommended to treat sore throat, inflammations in the mouth, and gingivitis (inflammation of the gums). Test tube studies have found that sage oil has antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral activity which may partially explain the effectiveness of sage for these indications.

Sage is also approved in Germany for mild gastrointestinal upset and excessive sweating. An unpublished, preliminary German study with people suffering from excessive perspiration found that either a dry leaf extract or an infusion of the leaf reduced sweating by as much as 50%. A report from the United Kingdom indicates that herbalists there employ sage to treat symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes.

    How much is usually taken?
For treatment of sore throats, inflammation in the mouth, or gingivitis, 3 grams of the chopped leaf can be added to 150 ml of boiling water and strained after 10 minutes. This is then used as a mouthwash or gargle several times daily. Alternatively, one may use 5 ml of fluid extract (1:1) diluted in one glass of water, several times daily. For internal use, the same tea preparation described above may be taken three times per day.

Are there any side effects or interactions?
Concern has been expressed about the internal use of sage due to the presence of thujone. Even when consumed in small amounts for long periods of time, thujone may cause increased heart rate and mental confusion. Very high amounts (several times greater than one receives if taking sage as instructed above), may lead to convulsions. If one takes sage internally, it is best to limit use to the amounts listed above and to periods of no more than one to two weeks. Extracts of sage made with alcohol are likely to be higher in thujone than those made with water. Sage oil should never be consumed without being first diluted in water. Sage should not be used internally during pregnancy. These concerns do not extend to the use of sage as a gargle or mouth rinse. Sage should be avoided when fever is present.

    Cinnamon
    Parts used and where grown
Most people are familiar with the sweet but pungent taste of the oil, powder, or sticks of bark from the cinnamon tree. Cinnamon trees grow in a number of tropical areas, including parts of India, China, Madagascar, Brazil, and the Caribbean.

    Historical or traditional use
Cinnamon is an ancient herbal medicine mentioned in Chinese texts as long ago as 4,000 years. It has a broad range of historical uses in different cultures, including the treatment of diarrhea, rheumatism, and certain menstrual disorders.

    Active constituents
Various terpenoids found in the volatile oil are believed to account for cinnamon’s medicinal effects. Important among these compounds are eugenol and cinnamaldehyde. Both cinnamaldehyde and cinnamon oil vapors are potent anti-fungal compounds. Preliminary human evidence confirms this effect in a clinical trial with AIDS patients suffering from oral candida (thrush) infections that improved with topical application of cinnamon oil. Antibacterial actions have also been demonstrated for cinnamon. The diterpenes in the volatile oil have shown anti-allergic activity as well. In addition, water extracts may help reduce ulcers. Test tube studies also show that cinnamon can augment the action of insulin. However, use of cinnamon to improve the action of insulin in people with diabetes has yet to be proven in clinical trials.

    How much is usually taken?
The German Commission E monograph suggests 1/2–3/4 teaspoon (2–4 grams) of the powder per day. A tea can be prepared from the powdered herb by boiling 1/2 teaspoon (2–3 grams) of the powder for ten to fifteen minutes, cooling, and then drinking. No more than a few drops of volatile oil should be used and only for a few days at a time. A tincture (1/2 teaspoon or 2–3 ml) may also be taken three times per day.

Are there any side effects or interactions?
Some people develop bronchial constriction or skin rash after exposure to cinnamon. Therefore, only small amounts should be used initially in people who have not previously had contact with cinnamon, and anyone with a known allergy should avoid it. Chronic use of the concentrated oil may cause inflammation in the mouth. According to the German Commission E monograph, cinnamon is not recommended for use by pregnant women.

North American Herb and Spice Mission
North American Herb and Spice is not only to educate the public on the powers of raw whole foods, but to create a morale standard for the way we nourish our bodies. Our beliefs intertwine with movements across the globe that advocate the conservation of our natural resources and maintain the delicate balance of nature. For this we align ourselves and support causes that set a high morale standard for the respect of nature and our health. We are opposed to the use of genetically modified organisms in our food. We believe in the power of raw foods, and the power that uncooked vitamins, minerals, nutrients, and enzymes posses. We believe that nature intended for our bodies to depend on natural-source vitamins and minerals, not synthetics. It is these among other ideals that have fueled our pursuit for a happier and healthier human race.

Wild handpicked spices such as the oregano we use in Oreganol P73 are the cornerstone of our product line. The phenolic compounds found in these spices have been revered since antiquity for their powerful effects. These whole, raw spices are steam distilled using the same processes used for generations, capturing the concentrated essential oil at often astounding ratios. These concentrated spice oils are then emulsified in extra virgin olive oil at the perfect ratio for power and palatability. Through this proprietary process invented by our founder Ms. Gray, the spice extract market in the United States was revived after problems with adulteration hindered its growth in the early 1950s. The end result was the purest, most powerful spice extracts made from the purest ingredients free from pesticides, chemicals, and solvents.

Wild oregano is handpicked by villagers in the most remote mountainous regions of the Mediterranean. This ensures the impeccable purity and quality of the essential oils we provide. When the wild spice and herbs are steam distilled to extract the powerful essential oils, it is done with pure, underground spring waters. This is a technique used by the indigenous peoples of the region for centuries. After the steam distillation process is complete, the essential oils are then tested to ensure the phytochemical markers are within our expectations. When the essential oils are emulsified, it is in organic extra virgin olive oil, which by itself possesses powerful nutritive properties. We never adulterate our products with fillers, chemicals, or solvents. North American Herb and Spice’s early challenges have led to the development of not only the most unique variety of products in the world, but also a standard for quality second to none.

North American Herb and Spice History
North American Herb and Spice was founded in 1999 by Judy Kay Gray, MS with the idea that nourishment from raw whole foods is the key to maintaining optimal health. Today those founding ideals serve as the foundation for more than 130 unique products, formulations that are highly nourishing and naturally powerful. Throughout the years North American Herb and Spice has exemplified quality in all the ingredients used to formulate its products. From the remote mountains of the Mediterranean to the valleys of the Amazon rainforest, North American Herb and Spice has sourced the finest fruits, herbs, and spices in the world. Wild handpicked spices such as the oregano we use in Oreganol P73 are the cornerstone of our product line. I recommend this product!
This product has been through clinical trials and proven as strong as Vancomycin Antibiotic. The dose is 2 capsules twice daily for severe infections, and 3-4 caps twice daily for extreme infections, and for panadamic/life threatning infections up to 12 daily. This product can cure Hepatitis C, Lymes, tooth infections, bladder infections, you name it. Each capsule equals 50 DROPS of OIL! Yes, you heard right! 50 DROPS! After taking this product, be sure to follow it with Probiotics. If you take it like an antibiotic regime for 10 days- 2 weeks, then stop or go to a small maintence dose, then you can wait until your done taking it to take the probiotics. Otherwise if you take it for a chronic condition, it is best to take OregaResp during the day and Probiotics at night before bed. This is equal to (better) Pharmaceutical drugs and is much better for you. It is not hard on the liver, or kidneys according to studies, and actually builds up your body instead of tearing it down.

      I recommend this product!
This stuff has been the best that I have used to combat colds and allergic respiratory issues. I recommended it to a 93 yr old friend of mine who couldn't seem to get over a cough and constant rattle in his lungs. Within 1 wk of using this product, his cough was gone, he had hacked up a lot from his lungs in the first few days, and now he is feeling much better by his own testimony. The rattle in his lungs has pretty much been eliminated. This is a high quality product and Lucky Vitamin had the best price I could find.
