Do Supplements Work?
You’re standing there with a bottle of supplements in your hand, staring at the label with doubts and questions racing through your mind. You’ve read articles, listened to friends, asked your doctor, but you’re still not sure. The short answer is “yes.”
Literally thousands of published peer-reviewed scientific studies demonstrate supplements work.
From professional athletes to moms, more and more people are enjoying the benefits of including nutritional supplements in their daily routine.
An increasing number of health professionals recommend them as part of the growing field of integrative medicine.
Are Supplements Safe?
There’s a myth floating around out there that anything natural is safe. While most natural supplements have an excellent track record, it would be misleading to use “natural” as an absolute guide to safety.
NOW was founded on the understanding that using natural products is one of the best things you can do for your health. NOW founder and chemist, Elwood Richard, was deeply impressed by the data he’d seen on natural products.
However, “natural” doesn’t always mean safe. Some supplements can affect your internal chemistry dramatically – often in positive ways. But - depending on your health status and unique biochemistry - this can also bring negative results. Bottom line, the same natural supplement may not work the same way for different people.
Fortunately, most reputable supplement companies include helpful warning labels on their products that will help you identify potential problems. It’s important to do your research. And if you have specific health concerns, speak with your health care provider.
What Is Natural?
You see the word “natural” plastered all over the grocery shelves: all-natural cereal, 100% natural fruit drinks, natural supplements and natural skin care. Many of us think the word “natural” on the label is the best indicator of quality and wholesomeness.
Can we tell that a product is wholesome because it says on the box or bottle that it’s 100% natural? Some descriptive terms are defined by law or by regulation. “Organic,” “100% whole wheat” and “whole grain” have all been defined by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). But except for meat and poultry and a few minor ingredients such as colorants, “natural” is still undefined when it comes to food.
The FDA has declined to define natural for foods. The FDA has hinted at some standards by stating it "has not objected to the use of the term if the food does not contain added color, artificial flavors, or synthetic substances." But the reality is – “natural” is a term that can be tossed on a label without meeting any standards at all.
In fact, natural products can contain genetically modified organisms (GMO), pesticides, herbicides and high fructose corn syrup. They can be developed in a lab, and they can be heavily processed. So, as it stands, it’s up to you to come up with your own standards of “what is natural.”
How Can Affordable Supplements Also Be High Quality?
Some affordable supplements fall into the cheap category. If you look closely at the raw materials used and the manufacturing process, you’ll find quality was shoved to the side. Cutting manufacturing expenses has trumped everything. These supplements are cheap in price and cheap in quality. Now, while these kind of supplements are considered affordable, they’re really not.
Supplement watchdog organizations have reported many supplements come up short when it comes to delivering what consumers are hoping to find in each bottle. In one 2004 study, a full quarter of the supplements tested came up short when it came to the potency they promised. Other studies have revealed supplements are contaminated due to the use of shoddy ingredients. Research has also revealed that manufacturers have substituted ingredients in order to cut costs.
Supplements and other natural health products are an excellent investment in your health. Many supplement ingredients have stacks of studies supporting their use. But you need to take supplements made with high quality ingredients in order to enjoy the benefits of good nutrition.
Good thing - thanks to NOW - you don’t have to sacrifice quality for affordability. From the beginning NOW has focused on how to make natural products available to everyone, and more specifically, how to make high quality natural products widely available.
The NOW mission is - To provide value in products and services that empower people to lead healthier lives. NOW Foods is an award-winning and highly respected manufacturer of vitamins, minerals, dietary supplements and natural foods.
In 1948, with the natural food and supplement industry in its infancy, entrepreneur Paul Richard paid $900 for the purchase of Fearn Soya Foods—a Chicago based manufacturer of grain and legume-based products. This began a six-decade legacy of providing health-seeking consumers with high-quality, affordable nutrition products.
NOW Core Values
As a thumb is integral for making a hand work, people are valued for being essential to NOW's success. NOW helps employees by providing quality work in a healthy and safe environment.
The first finger points the way towards making quality and healthy products. NOW believes that natural and organic products are safer and more effective than synthetic products not found in nature.
The center finger is the longest finger and represents maximum value for their products. NOW works hard to offer the very best products at affordable prices. It's not easy, but value is part of who they are and why they exist.
The ring finger represents respect for others, or following the Golden Rule "to do unto others as you would have them do unto you." NOW treats employees, customers, vendors and others honestly and with respect.
The little finger is small, but vital. It reminds NOW why they supply so many different products for good health and how these support their mission "to enable people to live healthier lives."
NOW's "veins" are firmly rooted in their same family ownership since 1968. This holds everything together and provides long-term stability.
During NOW Foods' 45+ years of serving health conscious consumers, they have seen the lean years along with the good, which helps them remain well grounded in what really matters – helping people.
This ideal goes hand-in-hand with NOW Foods’ original goal; to make health attainable by making quality dietary supplements affordable, thereby improving the quality of life for not only their customers, but for people everywhere.
NOW Foods is committed to sharing the good fortune of their products with others and give on the basis of the needs they see around them, or on the basis of specific worthy causes. They give to various charities in a direct and efficient manner, and continue to seek those charities that are "self-enabling", or encourage and teach recipients to help themselves.
NOW Foods donates to many non-profit causes and organizations including: The Children's Cabinet, Feeding America, Vitamin Angels and World Relief.
