Frequently Asked Questions
Where are ingredients sourced? Is CleanWell made in the U.S.?
CleanWell products are manufactured in the U.S with ingredients that are sourced worldwide.
Does CleanWell contain any animal products or by-products?
Their products do not contain any animal ingredients, products or by-products. They are vegetarian friendly as well as being certified cruelty free by PETA.
Are CleanWell products gluten free?
While their products do contain hydrolyzed oats, these oats do not contain gluten. However, they are manufactured on shared equipment which may process items containing gluten, so a small amount of gluten could potentially appear in their products.
Do any CleanWell products contain nuts or nut oils?
Their products do not contain any nuts or nut oils. The facilities that process the ingredients for CleanWell do, however, process ingredients for some other companies. While they believe that nuts are not processed at these locations, they are not able to absolutely guarantee that to be the case.
Is it safe for me to use CleanWell products while I am pregnant/nursing?
CleanWell uses only all-natural, wild crafted thyme in their products, a plant that has been part of the Mediterranean diet for thousands of years with no evidence of toxicity. The Mediterranean diet is, in fact, one of the healthiest diets on the planet. The level of essential oils in CleanWell products is no higher than what you would find with the addition of thyme to your diet if you cooked with it, so it is perfectly safe to use while pregnant or nursing.
Should I be worried if my child puts his hands in his mouth after I spray or wash them with CleanWell personal care products?
It is fine if a child puts his/her hands in their mouth after using CleanWell, as CleanWell is non-toxic.
What should I do if my child swallows or gets CleanWell in his/her eyes?
CleanWell is as gentle as mild soap. If your child somehow manages to drink a quantity of CleanWell soap or hand sanitizer you should give him/her some water. In the unlikely event your child shows signs of distress please contact your physician. For accidental sprays in the eyes, you can flush with cool, clear water. Your child’s reaction in both cases should be similar to a very mild soap.
I have/my child has eczema/dermatitis. Will CleanWell products irritate that condition?
CleanWell products are safe for sensitive skin, including eczema and dermatitis. While CleanWell is alcohol-free and hypoallergenic, as with any topical product if you notice any irritation, discontinue use.
How do I know what the expiration date is for my CleanWell personal care product?
All CleanWell products carry an expiration date stamped on them. You will generally find it on the bottom of the soap bottles or stamped on the bottom edge of the sprays and wipes.
My CleanWell product was frozen (or got really hot). Is it still good?
Yes, it’s still good (though they really don’t recommend leaving your CleanWell in extreme heat/cold conditions!). If frozen, you should allow the product to warm slowly at room temperature (do NOT heat in a microwave, etc.).
Does CleanWell make unscented versions of their products?
Thyme serves a very important function in making their products work, so the scent cannot be removed. This means there is no way to make CleanWell products unscented.
I see that CleanWell is certified cruelty-free. What does this mean?
They do not test on animals and they are PETA certified. PETA has added CleanWell to their list of cruelty-free companies.

Benefits of Thyme
The active ingredient in all CleanWell products is a formulation that harnesses the natural antiseptic power of thyme.
Thyme grows in various regions around the world without the use of pesticides. The plant is renewable, it grows quickly and is very hardy. The harvesting of thyme provides jobs for people living in local communities.
- A Brief History
The name of Thyme, from the Latin name of Thymus, may have been derived from the Greek word thyo for perfume. Ancient Egyptians used thyme in religious rituals and the Greeks used it in baths and as temple incense. They believed that it was a source of courage which may have led to the medieval practice of placing thyme under the pillow to prevent nightmares and aid in sleep. Knights and warriors carried scarves embroidered with Thyme into battle to bring them courage and strength.
- A Long Track Record (Really Long)
Thyme has a long history of use as a medicinal plant to ward off sickness. It has been used as an antiseptic for thousands of years in Roman, Greek, and Indian (Ayurvedic) medicine. As a culinary herb, thyme is well established in the cuisine of every culture where the plant grows wild.

Thought So. They Feel The Same Way.
They are committed to producing products that really work – and importantly, products that don’t force a tradeoff between being effective and being safe. And when they say work, they’re talking about products that excel in independent laboratory tests and in real life use and abuse.
They’re not just another company that makes stuff you clean with. They’re a group of people who set out to find a better way to clean.
They assembled a passionate team – doctors and scientists, entrepreneurs and designers, and some of the most creative minds they could find – to bring CleanWell products and their formulation of natural thyme oil to market.
Now when they look underneath sinks and in countless cupboards that have half-used products containing harmful chemicals – all of which will be used in the home, end up in a landfill or poured down the sink – they know they have a solution. They believe that once you have experienced clean without compromise, you’ll never look back.
Inspired By Real Life
CleanWell got their start because of a boy, Conor, born with an immune system disorder. His father, Sam, started investigating alternatives to disinfecting agents found in everyday cleaning products. The family’s determined spirit led to the development of the patented formulation in all CleanWell products. In 2005 Dr. Weiss, a Stanford trained physician and expert in natural chemistry partnered with Sam to create the CleanWell Company and the line of CleanWell products.
Twenty-five years ago Sam's son, Conor, would have been considered a bubble boy. Conor was born with an extremely rare and dangerous condition; a severe immunodeficiency that made the simplest childhood activities – a scraped knee, a cold, even contact with other children – potentially life-threatening. Today, Conor leads a relatively normal life; going on family vacations, training in gymnastics, and attending school, thanks in part to the germ-killing formula that Sam and his mom developed from a plant essential oil.
The first time Sam held his newborn son, Conor was sealed in an incubator in a neonatal ICU. They gave him his first stuffed animal in a plastic baggie. Sam was scared and overwhelmed; this was not how he expected to take care of his first child. Over the course of several years they met over a dozen physicians of various specialties but the doctors were stumped. Finally, they got an answer when Conor was diagnosed with a rare, non-genetic form of Combined Severe Immune Deficiency, which is just a fancy way of saying that he doesn’t have enough white blood cells to defend his body against infections, injuries and invasive materials.
So with only 10% of their son’s immune system functioning, it was critical that Sam and his wife, Jen, make their home as safe as possible for Conor. They soon discovered that they couldn’t find household disinfectants or antiseptic soaps that they felt comfortable using in their home. Jen and Sam realized that the use of harsh chemicals around Conor would end up being just another tax on his severely overburdened immune system, forcing him to process yet another source of foreign, unnatural “invaders” in his already hard-working body. After tirelessly searching for an acceptable option, and coming up empty, they were forced to face reality; there were no viable options for them.
In order to make a better life for their son, they took matters into their own hands. Along with Sam's mom, Joy, an aromacologist, he set out to make a formula that would kill germs and could be used around Conor. They discovered the formulation of natural thyme oil found in all CleanWell products.
CleanWell products help Conor live his best life. He excels at gymnastics and though he struggles with his condition, which continues to confound his doctors, he is out in the world with his peers. You can show the same consideration for your family, your health, your home, and your planet when you use CleanWell products.

The Man Who Knows What Clean Really Means
CleanWell Founder and Chief Scientist Dr. Larry Weiss is a widely published physician, scientist, and expert in the chemistry of natural products, infection control and epidemiology (the study of the causes and patterns of illness). After years of working at the intersection of technology, healthcare, and behavior, Dr. Weiss recognized CleanWell as a unique opportunity to prevent illness rather than treat it.
Inspired by the science behind CleanWell, he now works to empower people with information, tools, and products to make better decisions and support a healthy lifestyle.
He is a graduate of Cornell University and Stanford Medical School, and has served as a NIH Fellow, clinician, academic and teacher. Dr. Weiss is married and is the father of two daughters and two miniature longhair dachshunds. They all wash their hands (and paws) at least five times a day.
