Frequently Asked Questions
Will DevaCurl still work for individuals with permed curls instead of natural curls?
Once hair is permed, it is considered curly and must be treated with the same care as naturally curly hair. Moisture is the key to success with curls so the more dehydrated, the more they encourage you to use their botanically infused and very moisturizing conditioners and styling products.
Can those of us with straight hair use DevaCurl?
Absolutely. This gentle sulfate free, paraben free, water soluble and botanically infused system is great for all curl types or hair that is worn straight as well as hair that has been chemically processed.
What sets DevaCurl apart from other curly hair care product lines?
DevaCurl is a 100% sulfate, paraben and silicone free system for curly, wavy and chemically dehydrated hair. Every DevaCurl product contains beneficial and moisturizing botanicals that rejuvenate, restore and respect curls’ natural order. The unique Deva 3-Step technique has helped curly girls and guys to put down their weapons of mass curl destruction (straighteners, blow-fryers and harsh detergents) and embrace their natural curls.
What is the Deva 3-Step and how often should I follow it?
Cleanse, hydrate and define as often as your curls require. For some, the Deva 3-Step technique is a regular part of their daily routine and for others, once or twice a week is all it takes. To see the Deva 3-Step technique in action, watch here.
Why is there no lather in the DevaCurl No-Poo cleansers?
Lather offers zero cleansing value and is a by-product of the harsh detergents found in most shampoos. DevaCurl No-Poo, 100% sulfate, paraben and silicone free, contains a healthy dose of botanical ingredients for maximum moisture retention and frizz prevention.
What is the difference between DevaCurl and DevaCare products?
All DevaCurl and DevaCare products are 100% sulfate, paraben and silicone free and rich with botanical and plant-based ingredients. The DevaCare products contain additional vitamin C and orange peel extract to slow color fading. They recommend DevaCare for dehydrated, color treated and chemically dehydrated curls.
Does DevaCurl test on animals?
DevaCurl has never, and will never, conduct animal testing. No DevaCurl product contains any animal derived ingredients.

The Deva 3-Step: Three simple steps to perfect curls
Embracing your curls begins with a proven three-step hair care technique: Cleanse. Hydrate. Define. That’s the Deva 3-Step. No matter your curl type: S'wavy, Wavy, Botticelli or Corkscrew, doing the Deva 3-Step guarantees naturally gorgeous and frizz free, manageable curls.
- Step 1: Cleanse
A healthy scalp and sulfate free shampoo alternative, DevaCurl No-Poo is the first step to beautiful, natural curls. Most shampoos contain harsh, dehydrating detergents that create lather that strip curls of their moisture and irritate skin. The award-winning DevaCurl No-Poo is different because it’s a 100% sulfate, paraben and silicone free non-lathering shampoo, and it is enriched with a gentle yet protective blend of botanical and moisturizing ingredients.
Use a liberal amount of DevaCurl No-Poo to prepare your scalp and hair for Step 2.
- Step 2: Hydrate
The Deva 3-Step begins with their sulfate free shampoo alternative and continues with hydration. Work a generous amount of DevaCurl One Condition through water soaked curls to achieve maximum moisture and conditioning for natural curls. Glide the conditioner downward through curls with your fingers. The DevaCurl One Condition ultra creamy conditioner is excellent for daily use and for all curl types.
After you have gently rinsed the DevaCurl One Condition from the hair you are ready for Step 3.
- Step 3: Define
You’ve cleansed with DevaCurl No-Poo non-lathering shampoo alternative and you have conditioned with DevaCurl One-Condition for beautiful, natural curls. Get ready for definition! Awarded the 2010 Allure Best of Beauty honor, DevaCurl Light Defining Gel is considered to be one of the best products for curly hair. It is an alcohol free, light hold, moisturizing and defining gel. Using a palmful of the gel, tip your tresses upside down and “scrunch” Light Defining Gel upward toward the scalp. DevaCurl Light Defining Gel dissolves instantly and dries forming a moisture-protection cast to enhance curls.
Once dry, scrunch curls again to release the gel cast. Voila! The result is beautiful, bouncy curls. If you desire a more firm hold, try DevaCurl Ultra Defining Gel.
Curly Lifestyle : What Type of Curl Are You?
To guide you in caring for your curls, DevaCurl consulted with the original Curly Girl, Lorraine Massey. While there are numerous types of curls, most can be categorized into four curl types: s’wavy, wavy, botticelli and corkscrew.
You know you have s'wavy curls if you have:
- Hair that seems straight but could be encouraged to wave
- A natural shine
- A slight bend at the ends of your hair depending on the length
- Hair that holds its shape when layered
- Curls that fall vertically
- A low to no frizz factor
- A spring factor of 1 to 2 inches- (natural curl to curl pulled to it's full length
If you have s'wavy curls, your styling priority is Definition. S'wavy curl types tend to need additional wave and curl definition, curl retention and hold.
You know you have wavy curls if you have:
- Hair that you’ve always believed was straight
- Hair that occasionally develops a natural wave after coming out of the shower,at the beach and/or in humid climates
- Hair that is dry on the ends
- Hair that has a combined wave and curl pattern, and flat on the crown
- Curls that fall vertically
- A low to medium frizz factor
- A spring factor of 2 to 4 inches- (natural curl to curl pulled to it's full length
If you have wavy curls, your styling priority is Definition. Wavy curl types tend to need additional wave and curl definition, curl retention and hold.
You know you have botticelli curls if you have:
- Curls that vary in size and shape
- Curls that tend to be looser, in the shape of soft S’s, combined with those that are tight
- Curls that have a ropier appearance
- Hair that seems to wilt if it gets too long
- Curls that gracefully cascade downward and/or outward
- A medium to high frizz factor
- A spring factor of 5 to 8 inches- (natural curl to curl pulled to it’s full length)
If you have botticelli curls, your styling priority is Hydration. Botticelli curl types tend to need additional moisture, conditioning and frizz control.
You know you have corkscrew curls if you have:
- Curls that contract tightly if cut too short
- Lots of small spirals
- Hair that appears thickly textured when you look at it all together, but is actually baby-fine and delicate when you look at a single strand
- Hair that soaks up as much conditioner as you feed it
- Tangles and snarls under the top layer of hair at the nape of the neck
- A high frizz factor
- A spring factor of 9 to 12 inches- (natural curl to curl pulled to it’s full length)
If you have corkscrew curls, your styling priority is Hydration. Corkscrew curl types tend to need additional moisture, conditioning and frizz control.
Curly Lifestyle: Curly Qs & Tips
DevaCurl asked their experts to curlaborate and untangle some of the most frequently asked questions regarding curl care, maintenance and styling.
Why is it advised never to dry curls with a conventional towel?
Towels are too heavy and absorbent for hair. Most towels cause friction, which ruffle the sensitive hair cuticle, causing frizz. The DevaCurl DevaTowel and DevaGloves are made from soft, microfiber and designed to gently pull excess water from your curls absorbing just enough water to allow styling products to set curls and keep them defined.
Expert Styling Tip: 'Scrunch-squeeze' your curls in an upward scrunching motion towards the scalp to absorb any 'extra' moisture.
Can I blow-dry my curls?
The full on blast from a blow-'fryer' is deadly to curls. Air-drying is the easiest and gentlest way to dry your hair. If you must blow-dry your hair, use a diffuser to avoid frizz. The DevaFuser, with its unique ergonomic design, was created specifically for curly and wavy hair and delivers 360-degree airflow to gently dry curls without overheating or disturbing them.
The Curl Experts Say: Combine the DevaFuser with their redesigned DevaDryer for softer, shinier, frizz free and beautifully defined curls.
For maximum hydration, which DevaCurl product is best for my curls?
DevaCurl Heaven in Hair is an intense moisture remedy for excessively dehydrated curls.
Expert Styling Tip: Use DevaCurl Heaven in Hair once or twice weekly allowing the hydrating botanicals to penetrate your curls. Leave on for 15-30 minutes with or without heat.
Will DevaCurl Light Defining Gel or DevaCare Arc AnGEL leave my hair hard or crunchy?
Curls will initially dry to a hardened crystallized cast or 'gel' cast. However, as soon as you scrunch your curls, the cast will dissolve to reveal soft, bouncy and naturally gorgeous curls.
Expert Styling Tip: The more you scrunch the more volume and curl expansion you will create. Use more DevaCurl Light Defining Gel, DevaCurl Ultra Defining Gel, or DevaCare Arc AnGEL rather than less as most hair requires the extra moisture and added curl definition.
How do I give my roots more lift?
After applying DevaCurl Light Defining Gel, DevaCurl Ultra Defining Gel or DevaCare Arc AnGEL insert clips close to the scalp around the crown of your head to create volume and lift. Once the hair is dry, remove the clips and use your fingers at your scalp to shake out the roots.
Expert Styling Tip: For extra lift, targeted definition and curl enhancement, spray crown with DevaCurl Spray Gel.
I seem to have a little wave in my hair and normally style my hair straight. Is there an easy way for me to 'create' waves?
Where there's a wave, there's a curl! Wavy hair is often misunderstood and confused for straight. Doing the Deva 3-Step will encourage your natural wave, and after 3-weeks, you may be surprised to discover your full wavy potential with loose, glamorous curls that shine with good health.
Expert Styling Tip: For more defined waves, after using your DevaTowel, distribute a palmful of DevaCare Arc AnGEL using the scrunch-squeeze method. Bring your head upright and gently shake waves into their natural position and let them air dry.
How can I maintain my curls if I choose not to cleanse daily?
Daily cleansing is not always an option, nor necessary! For gorgeous second and even third day curls, spritz your curls with DevaCurl Mist-er Right. DevaCurl's lavender-infused curl revitalizer is perfect for refreshing, moisturizing and rejuvenating all curl types.
Expert Styling Tip: Use DevaCurl Mist-er Right on wet or dry hair, whenever your curls need an instant pick-me-up!
Can I detangle my curls with a comb in the shower?
No. Your fingers are the gentlest way to detangle curls. Combs cause breakage and disturb the curl formation.
Expert Styling Tip: Distribute a generous amount of DevaCurl No-Comb Detangling Spray throughout your hair. Then, gently glide your fingers through the curls. DevaCurl No-Comb Detangling Spray will help release any tangles that might be present.
My curls look dull. Is there a way to make them shine?
Unlike straight hair that reflects a lot of light, curly hair has contours, so light only reflects part of them. With TLC, and a few weeks of using a little extra DevaCurl One Condition, shinier curls will emerge. Note: avoid using silicone products for shine. Silicone coats the hair shaft of porous curly hair, sealing out moisture and causing the hair to become less defined and frizzy.
Expert Styling Tip: Use DevaCurl MirrorCurls, the first ever, silicone-free, water-soluble, botanically infused shine serum. DevaCurl MirrorCurls delivers both moisture and maximum curl reflection! Simply being curly is not enough. Beautiful, healthy hair is the result of first accepting your curls for their natural state, then working with them and being consistent in your daily care and styling routine.
What are the differences between No-Poo™ Quick Cleanser and Mist-er Right™?
Lavender-infused, DevaCurl Mist-er Right hydrates, deodorizes and revitalizes all curl types in a matter of minutes. DevaCurl No-Poo Quick Cleanser features the same clean No-Poo scent and is a botanically-infused conditioning spray that cleanses without water, is instantly refreshing and uses Peppermint to invigorate the scalp, while adding lift, texture and volume.
Expert Styling Tip: Section hair into 1 inch partings, beginning with hair at the top of the head. Spray No-Poo™ Quick Cleanser at the roots or where quick cleansing is necessary.
When the original curly girl and best-selling author Lorraine Massey began creating curl-friendly formulas for her own curls, she discovered two things that turned hair care on its head. First, curly hair needs to be treated differently than other hair textures. Second, sham-“poo” and its dehydrating ingredients is curly hair’s worst enemy.
What happened next started a CURL-volution!
With the support of thousands of enthusiastic curly hair salon clients, Massey and a talented team of curl care consultants developed DevaCurl. Perfect for curly, wavy and chemically dehydrated hair, DevaCurl cleansers, hydrators, definition and styling products are 100% sulfate, paraben and silicone free.
