Frequently Asked Questions
What product is best for my nails?
That all depends on what your nail type is. For best results, you should use a nail growth formula and then a nail strengthener or hardener formula based on your nail type. Nutra Nail has also revised its packaging to better define what product is best for you. Each package states what nail type it is for on the front. On the back of each package, it states a short description of that nail type so you can choose the right product for your specific problem.
How long will it take to see results?
When the products are used as directed and on a regular basis, you will begin to see results in one week. In four weeks you should have considerable improvement in nail strength and the length of your nails. Individual results may vary because everyone is different.
How long should I use a product for?
Natural nails need regular maintenance to stay beautiful and healthy looking. You cannot just use a product for one week and then stop. To have beautiful, natural nails is a life long commitment to treating them properly and using the right products for them on a regular basis.
When do I stop using a product?
Nutra Nail recommends that once you reach a satisfactory result, you can reduce the usage to once or twice a week. However, you should not stop treatment altogether or your nails will go back to their prior condition. Nails need regular maintenance to stay healthy and beautiful looking.
Can I use the 5 to 7 Day Growth formula with other Nutra Nail™ Products?
Yes, you can use any of the Nutra Nail™ 5 to 7 Day Growth Formulas with any other Nutra Nail product.
General Nail Care
No matter what nail type you have, all nails require care and maintenance to help get them looking healthy and beautiful and keep them that way. Even if you were born with strong nails, they won’t stay that way if you abuse them. All nails will benefit from a little regular care.
Step 1 – Start Taking 2500 mcg of Biotin*
Biotin is a B vitamin that has been clinically proven to help improve the actual thickness of the nail as new nail growth appears. It works from the cuticle out to provide nails with a critical nutrient to build up and strengthen the nail cells that form the actual nail plate. *Consult with your Physician prior to taking supplements.
Step 2 – Treat Your Nails to Weekly Manicures
A little attention each week will reap big rewards in the days that follow. Whether it’s a salon manicure or an at-home manicure, just relax, enjoy, and have it. Here is a quick guide to an at-home manicure using Nutra Nail™ Treatments:
- Clean nails
Because it’s very drying to the nails, try to limit the frequency of applying nail polish remover to just once a week. Dampen a cotton ball with the remover, press it on the nails for a few seconds, then swipe from the cuticle to the tip. For darker color polish, let the cotton sit on the nail a little longer to loosen the polish. To eliminate polish from crevices, use an orangewood stick with a cotton tip soaked in remover.
- File & shape
Decide what shape you want for your nails, and, using a soft grade file, work very gently from the outside toward the center of nail. See-sawing back and forth can fray and split the nail. A square nail shape is the strongest and resists breaking the most. To achieve this shape cut nails straight across and round them slightly at the sides. Other shapes include squoval, round, and pointed nails (See the Nail Shape Personality Chart to the right).
Apply Nutra Nail's 30 Second Cuticle Remover for 30 seconds, then soak nails in a small bowl filled with warm water and a gentle soap for one minute. If you must skip the soak, apply the cuticle remover and then go to the next step.
- Push cuticles
Using a soft cuticle stick push back the cuticles in a circular motion. Then gently wipe any residue off nails. If you have hangnails, use good quality nippers or small scissors to clip them. Don’t cut actual cuticles, since this can cause an infection. Wash & dry nails.
- If you need to grow your nails.
Use Nutra Nail’s Green Tea Growth Treatment Formula, a non-enamel formula that absorbs into the nails and nail bed (where it’s most needed) to deliver vital nutrients, hydration, conditioning, and Biotin. Massage it into nails and cuticles (this is very important because the massaging action gets blood flowing to the nails and stimulates the nail cells into action). Use this product by itself for a few weeks to get the maximum absorption into the nail bed. Once your nails are showing growth you can add Nutra Nail's Bullet-Proof Strengthener and nail polish to your regimen. When using the Growth product and any enamel-based products together, you must apply the enamel products first, and let them dry thoroughly, before applying the Growth product and massaging it in. If you don't, the Growth product may interfere with the adhesion of the polishes.
To apply enamel products:
- Get rid of any residue on the nail bed by wiping it with a cotton ball soaked with remover
- Apply Nutra Nail's Bullet-Proof Strengthener. This will smooth away ridges in nails, build up nail thickness, add strength, protect the nail from color staining and help nail polish adhere better. Allow the base coat to dry for one minute before applying a color polish. Finally,
- Apply the Growth Treatment on top of the polish, making sure you reach the cuticle and under the nail tip as well.
- If you need to just strengthen your nails
Get rid of any residue on the nail bed by wiping it with a cotton ball soaked with remover, and 2.) then apply Nutra Nail's Bullet-Proof Strengthener. This will smooth away ridges in nails, build up nail thickness, add strength, protect the nail from color staining and help nail polish adhere better. Allow the base coat to dry for one minute before applying a color polish.
- Apply color polish.
- Dip the brush into the nail polish until it is “full”
- Wipe one side against the bottle to get rid of excess polish. Use the other side of the brush to apply.
- First apply a horizontal stripe of polish over the very tip of your nail from left to right to help prevent chipping.
- Starting just above the cuticle area, apply a vertical stripe at the center of the nail bed, to the tip of nail. Then another vertical stripe on the left side of the nail bed, to the tip of nail, and then another vertical stripe on the right side of the nail bed, to the tip of nail. In three strokes you’ll have covered your entire nail. Wait one minute and add a second coat.
- Wait another minute and add a top coat for shine and protection.
- Nutra Nail has a great Chip-Proof strengthening top coat you can try or just re-apply the Bullet-Proof Strengthener over the polish.
Nail Care Tips
Nail Length: Keep nails at a length appropriate to the size of your nail bed and your activity level. Nails should extend no more than 1/3 the length of your nail bed, or less if you use your nails in a way that tends to tear or chip them. Short and neat looks better than long and ragged!
Filing: Excessive filing can weaken the edges of nails, causing them to peel, so keep filing to a minimum. If you really need to shorten your nails, clip them first, then smooth out the rough edges with a file or buffer.
Only file your nails when they’re dry. Then use a buffer to smooth out rough spots.
NEVER file nails back and forth across the tip of your nail. This will weaken the nail, causing it to split and chip. File nails toward the center, first from one side, then from the other.
Avoid filing deep into the sides of the nail, since this also tends to weaken it. Allowing the sides to grow makes them appear longer and they will wear better.
Cuticles: Instead of cutting your cuticles keep them well moisturized with Nutra Nail's Olive Oil Treatment and use a crème cuticle remover like Nutra Nail™ Cuticle Remover with Green Tea. Use a cuticle stick to push them back gently.
Stains: Dark polishes can discolor nails, so you should always wear a base coat like Nutra Nail's Base Coat & Ridge Filler under them and never leave the color on for more than a week. Nicotine from cigarettes also causes skin and nails to yellow. Using a teeth whitening gel with peroxide like Plus White Extra Whitening Toothpaste with Peroxide can help whiten them. Apply it to each nail with a Q-tip and keep it on for a minute or two to help remove yellowing (It’s great for your teeth, too!). Two other ideas that work amazingly well are to try rubbing fresh-cut lemons on clean nails or soaking them in water into which denture cleaning tablets have been dissolved.
Nail Biting: This is typically a stress reaction. When you get the urge to bite, try substituting a different form of oral gratification such as chewing gum or sucking on a mint. A split or chipped nail is a common trigger for biting nails, so try carrying a nail file with you at all times. As soon as you get a nick, file it off so you won't be tempted to play with it and bite it off. Weekly manicures are a good way to deter nail biting - if your nails always look nice, you will be less likely to bite them.
Nail Color: How do you know which one is best for your nails?
To start, look at the shape and size of your fingers, if you have short or pudgy fingers dark shades may not be your most flattering shade because it tends to make short or pudgy fingers look even more so. To help fingers look longer and slimmer, use a neutral shade. A color that’s closer to your own skin-tone will help elongate fingers.
If you have wide, flat nails, a little trick you can use to give the illusion of length is to apply nail color mainly to the center of the nail. Leave a thin line of unpolished area at either edge of the nail. This will help minimize the width of the nail and slenderize it.
When you choose a red nail polish, consider your skin tone. If you have fair skin, look for a cool colors like berry-toned red. If you have an olive complexion look for warmer colors like a red with a more yellowish tint.
Supplements*: Clinical studies have shown that taking 2500 to 3000 mcg of the B Vitamin Biotin can improve the quality of new nail growth, making nails thicker and stronger. Don’t expect immediate results - this is an ongoing, long-term measure to help condition nails and prevent nail problems. Taking the supplement, like Nutra Nail Biotin Nail Vitamin Supplement, every day can show results in 3 to 6 months.
*Consult with your Physician prior to taking supplements.
Maintenance: File nails regularly. This helps get rid of snags and tears before they lead to broken or torn nails. If you have natural nails, only use nail files with a grit between 240 and 300. Any smaller number will be too coarse, and anything higher will work more as a buffer.
Nails absorb and lose water and moisture 100 times faster than skin. So it’s especially important to moisturize your nails as well as your hands. Always apply a good crème, such as Nutra Nail™ Green Tea Finger, Nail & Cuticle Créme after having your hands in water, especially when using household detergents or cleaners. You can also massage a drop of olive oil into your bare nails every few days or whenever you change your polish.
Try not to put your hands and nails in water for long periods of time, as – believe it or not! - water immersion actually dehydrates nails and weakens them. Always use a hand crème after washing hands to seal in moisture, making sure you put it on the nails and massage it into the nails and cuticles. If you get into this habit you will rarely develop nail & cuticle problems.
Giving yourself a quick manicure every week. It's relaxing, and this little bit of maintenance will reap big rewards for your nails in the long run. Very few people are born with beautiful, healthy looking nails. Most nice looking natural nails are the result of consistent nail care and maintenance.
Ways to Protect Nails: Treat your nails like jewels, not tools. It is natural for you to want to use your nails as a tool to perform a variety of everyday tasks, but try and refrain… for your nails sake. With little practice, you can learn to use your knuckles, the pads of your fingers, and the backs of your hand to do most household chores.
Here are some helpful alternatives to using your fingernails:
- Use a pencil or pen to do limited pushing activities, dialing a phone number or turning a computer on and off.
- Choose household tools that take the workload off the hands and fingertips. Use a duster with a handle instead of a cloth that you have to push with your hand.
- When doing laundry, heavy, wet clothes can easily catch and break nails. Try using a barbecue or ice tongs to pull them out of the washer instead of your hands.
- Slide items off a smooth surface with the edge of your hand instead of picking at them with your finger nails.
- When putting on panty-hose, don't use the fingertips. Keep index fingers turned under and use the middle portion of the thumb to pull them up.
- For work activities such as using keyboards, use the pads of your fingers rather than the tips of the nail whenever possible.
- Never open letters or packages with the tips of fingers. Using a letter opener, scissors or a small craft knife are great for saving nails and polish from snags and chips.
You really need to become aware of everything your hands and nails encounter and should wear the appropriate gloves to do the job to help protect nails. Household chemical agents can really dry out and weaken nails dramatically, so wear heavy-duty rubber gloves. For gardening, using gardening gloves will help prevent nail breaks and discoloration, plus provide a barrier against bacteria and infection. For arts and crafts, use surgical gloves to get the fine control you need and prevent stains on nails from paints.
