Sinus Rinse is a natural soothing saline nasal wash. A large volume low positive pressure nasal wash is the most effective way to irrigate the nose based on current medical studies. Nasal Irrigation is an excellent way to clean mucus from the nose making medication more effective. They also clean allergens, irritants, bacteria and viruses from the nose reducing the frequency of infection. Furthermore, they help decrease swelling in the nose and increase air flow. Sinus Rinse is excellent for all ages; it is available in isotonic, pediatric and hypertonic concentrations.
Sinus Rinse helps alleviate:
Nasal Allergies & Dryness
Post Nasal Drip
Sinus Pressure & Nasal Stuffiness
Nasal Symptoms from Flu & Cold
Nasal Irritation from Occupational Dust, Fumes, Animal Dander, Grass, Pollen, Smoke & House Dust
What is the difference between the Pediatric Kit and the regular kit?
NeilMed’s Pediatric Sinus Rinse bottle has a volume capacity of 4 oz. (120 ml.), and an aperture (opening) on top of the cap of 3/32 in. (2.5 mm).
NeilMed's regular Sinus Rinse bottle has a volume capacity of 8 oz. (240 ml.) and an aperture (opening) on top of the cap of 3/16 in. (4.5 mm).
Both systems are designed to give the same concentration of solution. Children or adults who feel that the volume of the regular 8 oz. (240 ml.) bottle with the 3/16 in. (4.5 mm) cap is too large, should consider trying the pediatric kit. The therapeutic benefits will be identical.
Do not use NeilMed's regular blue colored packet in Pediatric 4 oz. (120 ml.) bottle. This may result in some burning or stinging sensations. Also, NeilMed cautions not to use the orange colored Sinus Rinse packet in 8 oz. (240 ml.) of water, as it will make a hypertonic (diluted) solution with the potential risk of significant burning. The right packet in the correct quantity of water will make an isotonic solution and will not create any burning or stinging. Thank you.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if I prefer a higher concentration of salt solution? Some physicians do recommend Hypertonic (double or triple the concentration) solutions in certain cases. They believe that a higher concentrated solution will draw the fluid and mucus out of congested nasal and sinus openings. If you prefer higher salinity or Hypertonic solution, you can use 2 to 3 of our blue mixture packets in 240 mL Packet. Each NeilMed™ Hypertonic packet will make 240 mL (8 fl oz) of Hypertonic solution or 480 mL (16 fl oz) of Isotonic solution.
What is the advantage of sinus rinsing? Some amount of mucus production from the nasal and sinus lining is normal. Allergies and infections will cause excessive mucus production. This creates nasal and sinus symptoms such as a runny and stuffy nose and post-nasal drip. When you perform a nasal rinse, you wash away excess mucus and irritants such as pollen, dust particles, pollutants and bacteria, thus reducing inflammation of the mucus membrane. Normal mucosa will fight infections and allergies better, and symptoms may be reduced.
How is a Sinus Rinse performed? For a true nasal rinse (also known as wash, douche or lavage), you need a large volume of saline—at least 60 mL to 120 mL (2to 4 fl oz) —in each nasal passage, delivered with low pressure or gravity method. You need a total of 120 mL (4 fl oz) to 240 mL (8 fl oz) to wash both sides of your nasal passages. When you squeeze the solution up into your nasal Passage, the flow should continue upwards, go over the septum and flow down through the other nasal passage. This ensures that all allergens, irritants, excess mucus and other materials in the path of the flow are removed from the nasal passage. Until this flow cycle occurs, you will not achieve a thorough cleansing job.
Why do you need low pressure? A low pressure will ensure that no discomfort is experienced in ears or sinuses.
Why do you need such a large volume? A large volume of saline solution creates a momentum that sweeps away all allergens, excess mucus, pollutants, dust and animal dander in the path of the flow.
How do I reduce the problem of dust mites? Clean all the areas where dust may be collecting. Carpets and sofa upholstery should be vacuumed on a regular basis. Wash pillow cases, sheets and blankets in hot water. Enclose mattresses and pillows in special allergy proof encasements. You can also contact an allergy care product company for more details.
What is perennial allergic rhinitis? This occurs when a person develops symptoms throughout the year whenever he or she is exposed to specific allergens, such as dust or cat dander.
What is mold? Mold is a fungus. It can be present in any area where it is damp and warm, especially in basements, bathrooms, kitchens and water damaged areas, such as wood, carpets, water coolers and heater fans.
Does rhinitis or sinusitis affect asthma? It has been established that there is a definite correlation between the symptoms of rhinitis, chronic sinusitis and asthma. Curing or reducing rhinitis or sinusitis may improve the symptoms of asthma significantly. Approximately 80% of the patients suffering from allergic asthma have coexisting allergic rhinitis.
Can you name a few allergens? There are indoor allergens as well as outdoor allergens. Examples of indoor allergens include dust mites, molds, pet dander (from animals and birds) and pests. Examples of outdoor allergens are pollen, grass, wood dust and mold. Other substances such as cigarette smoke, perfumes and aerosol spray can be irritants and worsen allergy and sinus symptoms, or can act as allergens themselves.
What is sinusitis? Sinusitis is an inflammation of the mucosa of various sinuses.
What is rhinitis? Rhinitis is an inflammation of the mucosa (delicate lining of the inner body surfaces) of nasal passages.
What are the causes of rhinitis and sinusitis?
Bacterial or fungal infections
Grass and smog
Dust or environmental pollutants
Nasal polyps and deviated nasal septum
GERD or moderate to severe acid reflux
What are sinuses? Sinuses are hollow spaces within the bones of the face. There are three pairs of sinuses: frontal, ethmoid, maxillary and one single sinus at the skull base that is called sphenoid. Each pair connects to the nose through small openings called ostia and acts to humidify and warm the air we breathe, add to our sense of smell and taste, and play a significant role in the quality of human sound. Additionally, these air-filled pockets help lighten our heavy skulls, making it easier to keep our heads upright.
Sinuses are lined with a mucous membrane called the mucosa. When your sinuses are healthy, they secrete a thin layer of mucus over the mucosa that drains into the nasal passages through the ostia. The mucosa acts as a filter to trap inhaled germs, dust, pollens, and environmental pollutants before they can reach your respiratory system. When the sinuses are inflamed or irritated, the ostia become blocked. Mucus accumulates inside the sinuses and becomes a breeding ground for viruses and bacteria.
What is the estimated number of people suffering from allergic rhinitis and sinusitis? The two most common illnesses that affect our sinuses are rhinitis and sinusitis. In the United States alone, it is estimated that from 30 to 50 million people suffer from one of these conditions. Our goal as a medical product company is to join forces with others in the health care field to help people suffering from these symptoms. Large volume nasal irrigation is considered by most ENT allergists, and also now supported with extensive medical literature, to be the first line of treatment for symptomatic relief of nasal and sinus symptoms due to all causes. We do not claim that our product Sinus Rinse will cure the problem, but we can certainly say that either alone or with other medical therapies, it will reduce symptoms and may eliminate the need for prescription medication. Recent study show that NeilMed Sinus Rinse with nasal corticosteroid sprays improve the quality of nasal sinus symptoms.
Can nasal rinses prevent or reduce a head cold or flu symptoms? In the initial stages of a head cold and/or flu, saline rinses in large volume help reduce excess mucus and keep sinus passages clear.
Can I drink alcohol during acute or chronic symptoms of rhinitis and sinusitis? Some individuals may get skin flushing and nasal congestion with the use of alcohol. Alcohol worsens these symptoms and it is recommended that you check first with your doctor or do not use alcohol during these symptoms.
What is FESS & ESS? Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) is a commonly used term for endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) and generally involves very little post-operative discomfort. Current technology including fiber optics, video cameras, high resolution video monitors and high resolution advanced CAT scanners allow excellent examination of all openings of the sinuses, nasal turbinates and nasal septum. When required, surgery will restore the anatomy to as normal as possible or more likely as functional as possible by removing obstructions and improving drainage. FESS or ESS can help improve or in a lot of cases cure the symptoms of chronic sinusitis.
What is a corticosteroid nasal spray? Corticosteroids are anti-inflammatory drugs. They are not anabolic steroids. Physicians prescribe corticosteroid nasal sprays to reduce chronic inflammation of the mucosa (mucus membrane) of nasal passages and sinuses.
What are antihistamines? Antihistamines are the most common medications used to treat allergies. They work by blocking the effects of histamine, which is released during an allergic reaction. They help relieve the symptoms of sneezing, itchy nose and eyes and runny nose. They are not as helpful with nasal congestion. They could be prescription or over the counter at your local store.
Can I sterilize the bottle, cap and tube in boiling water? No. This will destroy the plastic material.
Microwave Disinfection - Clean the device with soap and water and shake off the excess water. Now place the bottle, cap and tube in the microwave for 30 seconds to 1 minute. This will disinfect the device. There are no independent research studies to suggest that this is necessary, however, it is recommended by NeilMed. There are research studies in progress and it will take 1-2 years to publish the results.
How do I clean the cap and tubing? You can use a brush to clean the cap. If you feel that the system is contaminated, you could also use 70% isopropyl alcohol or white, distilled vinegar. After the use of vinegar or alcohol, make sure that you rinse the entire system with distilled or previously boiled water. Do not keep the cap or tubing in water with temperature above 1200 F. Make sure that you do not instill alcohol or vinegar into the nasal passages. To clean the tube, disconnect and rinse it.
Can I place the bottle in a dishwasher for cleaning purposes? No. The mouth of the bottle is too narrow to clean it thoroughly in the dishwasher. It is recommended that it be cleaned by hand.
When do I need to replace the bottle, tube, and cap? If the system is clean and functioning then there is no need to replace it. If the system is not working or has started leaking, use our order form and we will send it to you.
Can I share the bottle with another family member? This is not recommended due to the possibility of transmitting infection to others.

Step 1 Please wash your hands. Fill the clean bottle with the designated volume of warm distilled water, filtered water or previously boiled water. You may warm the water in a microwave but they recommend that you warm it in increments of five seconds. This is to avoid excessive heating of the water and damage to the device or scalding your nasal passage. Always Use Distilled or Micro-Filtered (through 0.2 micron) or Commercially Bottled or Previously Boiled & Cooled Down Water at Lukewarm or Body Temperature. Please do not use tap or faucet water when using NeilMed's nasal wash devices unless it has been previously boiled and cooled down.
Step 2 Cut the Sinus Rinse mixture packet at the corner and pour its contents into the bottle. Tighten the cap & tube on the bottle securely, place one finger over the tip of the cap and shake the bottle gently to dissolve the mixture.
Step 3 Standing in front of a sink, bend forward to your comfort level and tilt your head down. Keeping your mouth open without holding your breath, place cap snugly against your nasal passage and squeeze bottle gently until the solution starts draining from the opposite nasal passage or from your mouth. Keep squeezing the bottle gently until at least 1/4 to 1/2 (60 to 120 mL) of the bottle is used for a proper rinse. Do not swallow the solution.
Step 4 Blow your nose gently, without pinching your nose completely because this will apply pressure on the eardrums. If tolerable, sniff in any residual solution remaining in the nasal passage once or twice prior to blowing your nose as this may clean out the posterior nasopharyngeal area (the area at the back of your nasal passage). Some solution will reach the back of the throat, so please spit it out. To help improve drainage of any residual solution, blow your nose gently while tilting your head to the opposite side of the nasal passage that you just rinsed.
Step 5 Now repeat steps 3 & 4 for your other nasal passage.
Step 6 Clean the bottle and cap. Air dry the Sinus Rinse bottle, cap, and tube on a clean paper towel or use NeilMed NasaDOCK or NasaDOCK plus (sold separately) to store the bottle, cap and tube.
Warnings: DO NOT RINSE IF NASAL PASSAGE IS COMPLETELY BLOCKED OR IF YOU HAVE AN EAR INFECTION OR BLOCKED EARS. If you have had ear surgery, please contact your physician prior to irrigation. If you experience any pressure in your ears, stop the rinse and get further directions from your physician or contact our office during regular business hours. To avoid any ear discomfort: Heat the solution to lukewarm, do not use hot, boiling or cold water. Keep your mouth open. Do not hold your breath and if possible make the sound KHA....KHA... Make sure to take the position as shown. Gently squeeze 1/4 of the bottle at a time (60mL / 2 ounces). Stop the rinse if you feel any solution sensation near the ears. You may rinse with a partially blocked nasal passage. You may also consider discussing the use of SinuFlo Ready Rinse with your doctor. SinuFlo Ready Rinse bottle and mixture are to be used only for nasal irrigation. Please do not use for any other purposes. Please rinse at least ONE HOUR PRIOR to bedtime, in order to avoid any residual solution dripping in the throat. NeilMed strongly advises against the use of their kit on children or adults who have reduced comprehension. Patients who are unable to stand up or bend near the sink SHOULD NOT use this product. They advise you NOT to use SinuFlo Ready Rinse on patients who are bed bound or severely debilitated. Adults need to understand the procedure first before using it on their children. If your child is less than four years old, you should consult your child's physician before using this product. CAUTION: Rinsing your nasal passages with only PLAIN WATER will result in a severe burning sensation. Please do not rinse with plain water. Not for use in eyes or ears. Once seal is broken, use within 48 hours.
Before using the SINUS RINSE kit, please inspect the cap, tube and bottle carefully for wear and tear. If any of the components appear discolored or cracked, please contact NeilMed to obtain a replacement. You must follow the cleaning instructions provided in this brochure or cleaning instruction card prior to each use.

Rinse your nasal passages only with NeilMed packets. Their packets contain a patented mixture of USP grade sodium chloride and sodium bicarbonate. These ingredients are the purest quality available. Using home-mixed solutions may not provide you with adequate therapeutic relief, and will likely cause burning and stinging. Additionally, rinsing with plain water will result in a severe burning sensation; always remember to add a NeilMed packet to the water before rinsing.
They recommend that you use the rinse ONE HOUR PRIOR to bedtime in order to avoid any residual solution dripping in the throat.
Do not rinse if your nasal passage is completely blocked. You may still use the rinse with partially blocked nasal passages.
They strongly advise against the use of their kit on children or adults who have reduced comprehension. You should only use the product on children four years old and above. If your child is less than four years old, you should consult his/her physician before using the product. Adults need to understand the procedure first before using it on their children.
Patients who are unable to stand up or bend near the sink SHOULD NOT use this product. They advise you NOT to use this kit on patients who are bed bound or severely debilitated.
Tips to avoid ear discomfort while rinsing If you have had ear surgery, please contact your physician prior to irrigation. Do not use if you have an ear infection or blocked ears. Rinse with lukewarm water. Keep your mouth open. Do not hold your breath while rinsing. While rinsing, make sure to tilt your. Gently squeeze the bottle while rinsing; do not squeeze the bottle very forcefully. Stop the rinse if you feel a sensation of fluid near your ears.
Tips to avoid unexpected drainage after rinsing In rare situations, especially if you have had sinus surgery, the saline solution can pool in the sinus cavities and nasal passages and then drip from your nostrils hours after rinsing. To avoid this harmless but annoying inconvenience, take one extra step after rinsing: lean forward, tilt your head sideways and gently blow your nose. Then, tilt your head to the other side and blow again. You may need to repeat this several times. This will help rid your nasal passages of any excess mucus and remaining saline solution. If you find yourself experiencing delayed drainage often, do not rinse right before leaving your house or going to bed.
Caution against using homemade salt mixtures with NeilMed medical devices: Home made solutions may have incorrect concentrations, leading to inadequate relief or even nasal congestion. Additionally, storebought table salt and baking soda are not pharmaceutical grade compounds for medical use and may contain impurities. The NeilMed SINUS RINSE system is a large volume nasal rinse that will deliver 240 mL (8 oz.) of saline solution into the nasal passages. Adding one packet of NeilMed SINUS RINSE to 240 mL (8 oz.) of water will make an Isotonic saline solution (Hypertonic with 2 or more packets) that is pH balanced and preservative free.
