Bees. More Than Just a Nuisance?
It turns out bees do a lot more than most people realize-for such small, short-lived creatures, they do a lot of heavy lifting to keep life on Earth in balance. They make 1/3 of the nutritious fruits and vegetables possible, and they function as a buzzing alarm system for the planet's ecosystem. Basically, bees are magical fuzzy little flower-hopping life-bringers. And guess what? Bees are in trouble. But how do you get people to pay attention to the plight of a disappearing bug? You have to get a little wild. (Well, OK, maybe a lot wild.) So join Burt's Bees for an extraordinary look at life inside the hive.
Burt's Bees Mission & Vision
Burt's Bees makes people's lives better every day - naturally. Burt's Bees is an "Earth Friendly, Natural Personal Care Company." Burt's Bees creates natural, Earth-friendly personal care products formulated to help you maximize your well-being and that of the world around you.
To make certain that all their products meet the highest standards, as well as their dedication to ensuring The Greater Good, Burt's Bees products are carefully crafted using ingredients that are the best nature has to offer: beeswax, botanical and essential oils, herbs, flowers and minerals. These safe, effective ingredients have withstood the test of time.
What They Are - What you see is what you get.
At Burt's Bees, they don't waste their time - or yours - pretending to be something they're not. Burt's Bees prefers putting their energy into making the best natural personal care products out there to help you maximize your well-being. Burt's Bees is proud that over half of their 150+ products are 100% natural! Still, they won't be satisfied until all of their products are 100% natural and they are currently aggressively pursuing this goal through reformulations and testing. Burt's Bees labels every product with a "natural bar." It's their way of helping you clearly identify the high level of natural ingredients used in their products.
Additionally, Burt's Bees uses only natural colors in their products. Some of these include beta-carotene, chlorophyll, titanium dioxide and mica. These natural colors have been proven safe, unlike many artificial colors that have been banned by the FDA over the years. As far as fragrance components go, Burt's Bees uses them only when absolutely necessary, and all of their fragrances are phthalate-free.
Since their products are made from as many natural ingredients as possible, Burt's Bees thinks it makes sense that most of their packaging is created from recycled materials, or is developed with recyclability and re-use in mind, like their easy-to-recycle aluminum containers. Burt's Bees doesn't want to create any additional garbage on the planet, and work hard to reduce, reuse and recycle. For example, before they would launch their world famous lip balm in a plastic tube, it took them years to convince a plastic company to make recycled plastic for us. Now, that very same company is one of the leading manufacturers of recycled plastic.
And by the way, their packages are designed to hold just enough product for you to use up before it expires, so you don't end up throwing out half used tubes and jars. Burt's Bees is full of good ideas, naturally.
What They're Not - Naturally, they're nothing but the good stuff.
There are ingredients that you will never find in any Burt's Bees product. Things like petroleum, which is not a renewable resource and can be toxic. Sodium lauryl sulfate, which is a harsh, aggressive ingredient used in most cleansing products like shampoo. And when was the last time you saw a farmer growing propylene glycol? Rather than loading their products up with harsh chemicals or unnecessary fillers, Burt's Bees offers you only the good stuff. And of course, Burt's Bees will never conduct product or ingredient tests of any kind on animals. A few of their products contain ingredients derived from animals such as beeswax, royal jelly and milk. And for that, Burt's Bees thanks them.

Burt's Bees believes companies should be transparent.

They list the percent natural on every product label and avoid ingredients with potential risks. What's more, they strive to educate consumers - and the industry - about those potential risks.

Helping Ensure The Greater Good for All
In short, The Greater Good is the highest ethical choice any of us can make to maximize our overall well-being. That means doing what's best for you, your family and the environment.
At Burt's Bees, ensuring The Greater Good for their consumers, their employees and the world around them is a hard job, but they do it by adhering to a strong set of beliefs that they apply to every choice they make, every day.
What Is Natural?
"65% of people believe a personal care product labeled "natural" should contain 95% - 100% natural ingredients." Most contain far less. At Burt's Bees, they hold themselves to the highest standards of natural. They believe truly natural personal care and natural skin care products are the most effective products out there for you, the environment and The Greater Good. Discover the beauty of well-being.
Natural ingredients are profoundly effective, inspiring to your senses, better for the environment and beneficial to your overall well-being. Natural ingredients nurture our skin and hair with wholesome nutrients that our body chemistry is familiar with, working in harmony with our bodies.
You will never find any Sulfates, Parabens, Phthalates or Petrochemicals in any Burt's Bees products. Burt's Bees firmly believes that natural ingredients must come from a renewable/plentiful resource found in nature, with absolutely no petroleum compounds. This includes ingredients found in fauna (animal), flora (plant), and minerals. Rest assured, though, the animal part is substances like beeswax and honey.
Plus, natural ingredients work. In fact, many synthetic ingredients are modeled after natural ones. For example, willow bark extract contains natural salicylic acid, and is the main ingredient found in Burt's Bees Natural Acne Solutions products. While other brands may choose to use the synthetic alternative because it may be cheaper or easier to produce, Burt's Bees goes straight to the natural source for their ingredients.
Ingredients are only one part of what makes a product natural. Equally important is how those ingredients are processed. Burt's Bees prefers to use minimal processing including processes like distillation/condensation, extraction/steamed distillation/pressure cooking and hydrolysis. Their goal is to maximize purity without potentially negative effects on the ingredients. Simply put, their goal is to keep natural ingredients, natural.
The Natural Standard
"78% of people think that natural personal care products are regulated - 97% of people think they should be." The fact is, it's not. Without a clear definition of what "natural" is and isn't, there's been no way to know whether products are what they say they are. But, Burt's Bees is pleased to say that those days are over. Starting now, "natural" can - and will - have the same meaning across the personal care products industry.
What is the Natural Standard?
In order to help you identify truly natural products and maximize your well-being, Burt's Bees, along with the Natural Products Association and other leading Natural Personal Care companies, developed The Natural Standard for Personal Care Products. The standard is a set of guidelines that dictates which ingredients can and cannot be considered natural and ultimately, whether a product can be deemed truly "natural." Under the standard, any product labeled "natural" must meet the following four criteria:
Natural: A product labeled "natural" should be made up of natural ingredients and be manufactured with appropriate processes to maintain ingredient purity.
Safety: A product labeled "natural" should avoid any ingredient that research shows may have a suspected human health risk.
Responsibility: A product labeled "natural" should use no animal testing in its development
Sustainability: A product labeled "natural" should use (bio)degradable ingredients and the most environmentally sensitive packaging.
Ultimately, The Natural Standard for Personal Care Products aims to clearly define what a "natural" personal care product is and what it is not. The standard encompasses all cosmetic personal care products as defined and regulated by the FDA.
What does it mean?
Simply put, as of May 1, 2008, The Natural Standard for Personal Care Products states that all personal care products labeled or branded "natural" must be made with at least 95% all-natural ingredients and contain only those synthetic ingredients that are specifically allowed under this standard and do not have any suspected human health risks. The standard also requires that companies be transparent, fully disclosing their ingredients accurately and truthfully. They should strive to maximize their use of recyclable and post-consumer recycled content in packaging. And finally, they should avoid animal testing of ingredients or products.
How can you spot truly natural products?
Helping you to clearly understand and identify truly natural products is a key element of The Natural Standard for Personal Care Products. To easily identify those products that meet the standard, the Natural Seal has been developed. You can rest assured that products carrying the Natural Seal truly are natural. Be sure to look for the Natural Seal on Burt's Bees products starting later this year!
Burt's Bees Commitment to the Environment
Taking care of the environment is part of the DNA of Burt's Bees - it's inherently part of how they do business. Since the company began in 1989, Burt's Bees built their business on the foundation of Earth friendly natural personal care. They believe that in order to take from nature, they must protect and provide for nature - it's a cycle that they respect and preserve.
Burt's Bees' ultimate goal is to be the "greenest personal care company on earth." To this end, they have set wide-ranging goals to achieve by 2020. By that time, they want to be carbon free and operating on 100 percent renewable energy. They want none of their waste to be deposited in landfills. Their office and manufacturing facilities will have LEED certification. And, their employees will have ready access to the education, inspiration and motivation they need to make sustainable choices, in their workplace and in their homes.

Burt's Bees is committed to engaging in business and manufacturing processes that support their commitment to The Greater Good. That's why they are focused on streamlining their operations to ensure they meet the greenest standards by 2020.

They have established The Greater Good Foundation and will continue to support like-minded organizations that are also focused on being a powerful force for nurturing the well-being of others.
