For Clif, it all starts with getting to know our suppliers and engaging in a two-way dialogue, all of our suppliers go through an extensive screening process for quality ingredient selection and sustainability performance. They want people to understand our expectations and sustainable sourcing goals. To that end, they have a supplier code of conduct that speaks to their values and expectations on legal, social and environmental responsibility. Their code is based on select International Labor Organization (ILO) conventions and covers a full range of ethical trading issues focused on labor rights; including a safe environment, the right to organize, freedom to leave premises, and the absence of forced labor, slavery, human trafficking and discrimination in the workplace, among many others.
Clif checks up to confirm their expectations are met and correct any issues to ensure that they are moving together towards their mutual goals.
Yearly third-party social compliance announced audits are completed. Meeting the supplier code of conduct and all applicable laws, codes and regulations is an expectation of doing business with Clif Bar & Company. In fact, Clif has the right to terminate a contract or require vendors to implement corrective actions if a violation is ever found. In addition, responsible sourcing training by a third-party is required for their management, key staff within their supply chain and social responsibility teams. Clif Bar & Company started on a bike ride. Their founder, Gary, took a bite of yet another energy bar and thought to himself, "I can do better." Two years later, CLIF Bar was launched and soon became the leading energy bar.
As much as they loved the original, many of the women here at Clif Bar & Company were in search of a bar more suited for them - something just as flavorful and satisfying, but smaller and with fewer calories. And, they wanted this bar to address their unique nutritional needs.
