As a food company, Clif Bar & Company is working step by step to help create a healthier, more just and sustainable food system. They are on a journey to do business in a different way-they strive to reduce their environmental footprint and improve in everything they do, from the field to the final product. They have put in place responsible sourcing goals, practices and policies to communicate their values and expectations for suppliers to act ethically and responsibly.
To understand their sustainable sourcing practices, they want to share how they work with expert third parties and evaluate risks and opportunities in four areas they call their 'CORE' values of sustainable sourcing:
- Connect - Connect with the farmers who grow their food, and create a traceable supply chain.
- Their traceability program ensures they know where their ingredients come from, and they visit select suppliers annually.
- Organic - Increase their purchase of organic, transitional, and certified-sustainable ingredients.
- To date, 70 percent of everything we buy is certified organic. They've purchased over 200 million pound of organic ingredients and their goal is purchase 80 percent organic and certified-sustainable ingredients by 2015.
- Restore - Support and encourage restorative practices that reduce environmental impacts, conserve natural resources and protect biodiversity.
- Their key facilities where they make their food are moving towards zero waste with a 2015 goal of 90 percent waste diversion from landfills, and...
- They maintain climate neutral status and are working to reduce and offset CO2 emissions generated by our headquarters, manufacturing and business travel 10 percent below 2009 levels by 2015 on a per bar basis.
- Ethical -Source ingredients using fair labor practices.
For Clif, it all starts with getting to know our suppliers and engaging in a two-way dialogue, all of our suppliers go through an extensive screening process for quality ingredient selection and sustainability performance. They want people to understand our expectations and sustainable sourcing goals. To that end, they have a supplier code of conduct that speaks to their values and expectations on legal, social and environmental responsibility. Their code is based on select International Labor Organization (ILO) conventions and covers a full range of ethical trading issues focused on labor rights; including a safe environment, the right to organize, freedom to leave premises, and the absence of forced labor, slavery, human trafficking and discrimination in the workplace, among many others.
Clif checks up to confirm their expectations are met and correct any issues to ensure that they are moving together towards their mutual goals.
Yearly third-party social compliance announced audits are completed. Meeting the supplier code of conduct and all applicable laws, codes and regulations is an expectation of doing business with Clif Bar & Company. In fact, Clif has the right to terminate a contract or require vendors to implement corrective actions if a violation is ever found. In addition, responsible sourcing training by a third-party is required for their management, key staff within their supply chain and social responsibility teams. Through these verification, auditing, compliance certification and training efforts and more, Clif is committed to socially responsible sourcing practices and improving along the way. They know they are not perfect and that creating a sustainable supply chain is an on-going process of continual improvement.
About Cliff Bar & Company
Clif Bar & Company started on a bike ride. Their founder, Gary, took a bite of yet another energy bar and thought to himself, "I can do better." Two years later, CLIF Bar was launched and soon became the leading energy bar.
As much as they loved the original, many of the women here at Clif Bar & Company were in search of a bar more suited for them - something just as flavorful and satisfying, but smaller and with fewer calories. And, they wanted this bar to address their unique nutritional needs.
So they put their minds and taste buds to work to create something delicious and nutritious. In 1999 they launched LUNA. It was an immediate hit with active women who wanted something that tastes good and is good for them.
As a company they hold theirselves to not one, but five "bottom lines":
Sustaining their business by creating long-term, sustainable goals and continuing to grow within their means
Sustaining their brands by making nutritious and delicious products, and never compromising on quality
Sustaining their planet by keeping their impact on the environment small, even as they grow
Sustaining their people by creating a workspace where people can thrive and find balance, even from 9-5
Sustaining their community by being good neighbors and giving back to the community in which they live
Today, a decade after the first LUNA bar, they are still spending a lot of time in the kitchen doting over the bars. But they feel even more nourished when they are doing the things they enjoy most, and giving back to the community. To see what keeps them inspired and connected with other women check out LUNAFEST, Team LUNA Chix, and their friends at the Breast Cancer Fund, and Healthy Child Healthy World. They feel incredibly lucky to be able to work at a place like this. They hope you join them - even if it's just by eating a bar or two!
