What is the difference between eczema and atopic dermatitis?
The word "eczema" has a few meanings. It is a general term that means a family of skin conditions that causes the skin to become inflamed (swollen, irritated and itchy). One of the most common types of eczema is atopic dermatitis, also called "atopic eczema." Sometimes people use the word "eczema" when referring to atopic dermatitis.

      What is atopic eczema?
Atopic dermatitis is a common type of eczema. Most (90%) of people develop atopic dermatitis by age 5. Skin affected by atopic dermatitis itches. This is probably because the skin has what your dermatologist may call "barrier defects." These barrier defects allow things to irritate the skin for easily, and this causes itching.

What does atopic eczema look like?
While atopic dermatitis can look different from person to person, everyone share one common symptom. The skin itches. In fact, atopic dermatitis usually begins with an itch, and is often referred to as the itch that rashes.

In infants, the rash generally appears on the cheeks and around the mouth. By age 2, atopic dermatitis most commonly occurs on the hands, wrists, arms and legs. You will often see atopic dermatitis in the creases of the elbows and the bends of the knees by age 4. The most commonly affected areas in children and adults are the face, neck and the insides of the elbows, backs of the knees, and ankles. Regardless of where the rash appears, it usually causes dry, red and extremely itchy patches of skin. The skin can become so dry that it cracks and bleeds. Some people develop blisters that weep and ooze. The skin continues to itch. Long-term scratching can cause the skin to thicken and develop a leathery texture. Your dermatologist may call this thickening of the skin "lichenification."

      What causes eczema?
It is important for you to understand specifically what causes eczema in order to seek the right type of treatment. First, you should understand the difference between the external and internal causes of eczema. Externally is typically when you come into direct contact with a substance that caused a reaction. If the substance has touched your skin and caused a reaction, then the outbreak will typically only be on the surface of the skin that actually contacted the trigger. While it is easy to come into contact with an external trigger, it is also easy to identify and control these triggers.

Internal triggers cause an extreme reaction by your immune system and the skin begins to react internally, at the cellular level. These reactions are typically from a combination of internal triggers, such as an allergen and a hormone imbalance occurring at the same time. They also appear all over the body at areas of weakened skin. These can be mild or severe reactions, depending on your skin's genetic makeup.

      What is psoriasis?
Psoriasis is an immune-mediated, genetic disease manifesting in the skin and/or the joints. It affects more than 4.5 million people in the United States. In plaque psoriasis, the most common type, patches of skin called "lesions" become inflamed and are covered by silvery white scale. Psoriasis can be limited to be a few lesions or can involve moderate to large areas of skin. The severity of psoriasis can vary from person to person; however, for most people psoriasis tends to be mild.

      Is psoriasis contagious?
No psoriasis is not contagious. It is not something you can "catch" or "pass on." The psoriasis lesions may not look good, but they are not infections or open wounds. People with psoriasis pose no threat to the health or safety of others.

Can psoriasis occur at any age?
Psoriasis often appears between the ages of 15 and 35, but it can develop at any age. Approximately 10% to 15% of those with psoriasis get it before age 10. Some infants have psoriasis, although this is considered rare.

      What is rosacea?
According to Rosacea.Org, Rosacea (pronounced "roh-ZAY-sha") is a chronic and potentially life-disruptive disorder primarily of the facial skin, often characterized by flare-ups and remissions. Many have observed that it typically begins at any time after age 30 as as a redness on the cheeks, nose, chin or forehead that may come and go. In some cases, rosacea may also occur on the neck, chest, scalp or ears. Over time, the redness tends to become ruddier and more persistent, and visible blood vessels may appear.

Although rosacea can affect all segments of the population, individuals with fair skin who tend to flush or blush easily are believed to be at greatest risk. The disease is more frequently diagnosed in women, but more severe symptoms tend to be seen in men - perhaps because they often delay seeking medical help until the disorder reaches advanced stages.

What are the Signs and Symptoms of Rosacea?

      • Primary signs of Rosacea:
        • Flushing: Many people with rosacea have a history of frequent blushing or flushing. This facial redness may come and go, and is often the earliest sign of the disorder.
        • Persistent Redness: Persistent facial redness is the most common individual sign of rosacea, and may resemble a blush or sunburn that does not go away.
        • Bumps and Pimples: Small red solid bumps or pus-filled pimples often develop. While these may resemble acne, blackheads are absent and burning or stinging may occur.
        • Visible Blood Vessels: In many people with rosacea, small blood vessels become visible on the skin.
      • Other Potential Signs and Symptoms
        • Eye Irritation: In many people with rosacea, the eye may be irritated and appear watery or bloodshot, a condition known as ocular rosacea. The eyelids also may become red and swollen, and styes are common. Severe cases can result in corneal damage and vision loss without medical help.
        • Burning or Stinging: Burning or stinging sensations may often occur on the face. Itching or a feeling of tightness may also develop.
        • Dry Appearance: The central facial skin may be rough, and thus appear to be very dry.
        • Plaques: Raised red patches, known as plaques, may develop without changes in the surrounding skin.
        • Skin Thickening: The skin may thicken and enlarge from excess tissue, most commonly on the nose. This condition, known as rhinophyma, affects more men than women.
        • Swelling: Facial swelling, known as edema, may accompany other signs of rosacea or occur independently.
        • Signs Beyond The Face: Rosacea signs and symptoms may also develop beyond the face, most commonly on the neck, chest, scalp, or ears.

      About Raw Skin Ceuticals
      About Sarah, Co-Founder
Sarah suffered skin problems from the very early age (11) and like so many others used everything from OTC products to dermatologists prescribed solutions. Obviously there were periods of diminished blemishes, but she can never remember when her skin wasn't irritated by either redness caused by breakouts or red dryness as a result of the products. Makeup was the only salvation and though it covered the problems, constant coverage perpetuated the breakouts. Only in her mid-twenties did Sarah take a different approach. With the advantage of being an "at home" mom and not so much worry of day to day blemishes, Sarah was able to research natural solutions and begin experimenting. It should be understood that Sarah has always believed in home remedies and naturally healing your body; avoiding doctors and prescriptive medicines whenever possible. That said, the turn to natural and organic materials was simply philosophy crossing necessity. The original intent was something that worked for her - not a product line. Now as the experimenting and research became fruitful, the natural herbs and oils began to become more organized, and soon, actual products materialized; then an entire line. Soon others were asking to try the solutions - as they saw success a completely different plan began to materialize. Herein lies the beginning of Raw Skin Ceuticals - almost ten years from the first herb purchases to full product line.

I was very disappointed with this product. I ordered it because I was experiencing extremely dry skin during these winter months and was desperate to find a solution. This did absolutely nothing. It didn't help with the dryness. I would apply it (which was hard to get out of the little bottle) and a few minutes later my skin was dry again. Would not recommend. The scent was not pleasant either.
