What is acne?
Acne is a disorder that causes outbreaks of skin lesions commonly called pimples. It is caused by the skin's oil glands making too much sebum, an oily substance, which leads to plugged pores. It can also be caused by the rapid production of a bacteria. Acne lesions occur mostly on the face, neck, back, chest and shoulders. It is the most common skin disease. Although acne is not a serious health threat, severe acne can lead to disfiguring and permanent scarring.
What are the different types of acne lesions?
- Comedo (whiteheads or blackheads) or papules. The comedo is the basic acne lesion, which is a plugged pore. If the plugged pore stays under the skin, it's called a closed comedo and forms a white bumb or whitehead. Blackheads are comedos that open up and appear blackish on the surface of the skin. This black color is not due to dirt, but because the air reacts with the excess oil.
- Pustules or pimples. Pustules or pimples are acne lesions that contain pus and are red at the base.
- Nodules. These are more serious acne lesions. They lodge deeper in the skin, are painful, and can cause scarring.
- Cysts. Like nodules, these lesions are deep within the skin, are painful and are filled with pus, and can cause scarring.
I'm 30 - why acne now?
It is becoming more and more common for young women who had no problem during teen years to develop acne between age 30-35. There are probably many reasons. One significant reason is related to the use of birth control pills. Birth control pills utilize two hormone groups that are synthetically made to mimic the ovarian cycle/ovulation processes that are normally at work only during pregnancy. Specifically, birth control pills trick the ovaries into thinking the lady is already pregnant and ovulation does not occur. These synthetic hormones in most birth control pills have strong Androgenic (male hormone) side effects on sebaceous gland production of oil in the skin.
Another possible reason for the 30-year-old onset of acne might relate to hormone adjustments after a pregnancy, nursing a child, or simply experiencing the stressful lifestyle so prevalent today with all the demands and time limits you may impose on yourself.
Men may still have acne symptoms at age 30, but it is unlikely that acne will develop then for the first time. They are still subjected to stress, and men may skip the gentle cleansing of facial areas after sports, etc, so acne can still be a problem.
Does stress cause acne?
Stress does not cause acne, per se. Stress does stimulate your body enzyme and immune systems to cause a stimulation of the oil glands. It has been proven that lowering stress levels certainly can help to decrease oil production, and thus decrease the symptoms of acne.
Is popping pimples really that bad for my skin?
Yes, it is. However, if you pop a pimple, apply Acne.Ceuticals Spot Treatment immediately to the exposed area. An inflamed blemish happens when the pore becomes engorged with excess sebum, dead skin cells and bacteria. When you squeeze a pimple, you may inadvertently force the debris from the pore deeper into the follicle. That can cause the follicle wall to rupture and spill infected material into the dermis (the innermost section of the skin).
Not only do you run the risk of scarring if you pick at or "pop" your pimples, you can worsen the blemish. Don't be fooled if you are able to coax pus and debris from the pore opening. Infected material may still be entering the dermis from below. Squeezing a pimple can lead to a nodule (hard, red, painful blemish deep within the skin) or a cyst. The most serious form of a blemish, cysts are large and painfully inflamed lesions. They develop when a membrane forms around the infection in the dermis, creating a soft, fluid-filled lump. Cysts must be treated by a physician. Picking at your blemishes can spread infection, and ultimately worsen your acne. Clearly a hands-off policy is the best choice when it comes to your skin.
How long until I begin to see results with the Acne.Ceuticals System?
Generally speaking, 4-6 weeks, but some will have much faster results and other more severe cases may take 3+ months to begin to see real results. The goal is to treat the skin "6 weeks in advance" from the birth of the new cells to the exfoliation of the dead cells. The Acne.Ceuticals System is formulated to heal the skin from the inside out and encourage healthier cells to form and heal outside blemishes.
Will there be a detox period?
Yes, there may be a detox period within the first 2-3 weeks as your skin begins to heal. Signs of detox: small red bumps, increased breakouts, or dry and flakey patches.
In the mini-facial, should I exfoliate first and then masque, or masque and then exfoliate?
Exfoliate first, masque second, serum third.
Will the acne products help with scarring?
RawSkinCeuticals acne treatments are formulated to heal and repair; however a combination of regeneC scar creme and c-serum + Acne.Ceuticals will help to accelerate the healing and fading of scars. Results vary with each individual.
I have very oily skin. Do I need to moisturize every day?
Yes, use acne.ceuticals Control Creme. Begin with twice daily. If oiliness does not improve within 7 days, use the control creme once daily (in the evening). In the morning, tone + spot treat. In the evening, cleanse + tone + spot treat + control creme.
Should I stop using my other acne products and/or prescription creams when beginning the Acne.Ceutical regime?
It is important that you commit to the Acne.Ceuticals system as it stands and not combine products/brands, especially during the first 4-6 weeks. Consult your dermatologist/doctor before going off any medications and/or creams.
About Raw Skin Ceuticals
About Sarah, Co-Founder
Sarah suffered skin problems from the very early age (11) and like so many others used everything from OTC products to dermatologists prescribed solutions. Obviously there were periods of diminished blemishes, but she can never remember when her skin wasn't irritated by either redness caused by breakouts or red dryness as a result of the products. Makeup was the only salvation and though it covered the problems, constant coverage perpetuated the breakouts. Only in her mid-twenties did Sarah take a different approach. With the advantage of being an "at home" mom and not so much worry of day to day blemishes, Sarah was able to research natural solutions and begin experimenting. It should be understood that Sarah has always believed in home remedies and naturally healing your body; avoiding doctors and prescriptive medicines whenever possible. That said, the turn to natural and organic materials was simply philosophy crossing necessity. The original intent was something that worked for her - not a product line. Now as the experimenting and research became fruitful, the natural herbs and oils began to become more organized, and soon, actual products materialized; then an entire line. Soon others were asking to try the solutions - as they saw success a completely different plan began to materialize. Herein lies the beginning of Raw Skin Ceuticals - almost ten years from the first herb purchases to full product line.
With over ten years experience in research and development to provide real skin solutions, it is the guarantee of Raw.Ceuticals, maker of Raw Skin Solutions and Treatments, to provide tested and naturally balanced products for its customers. Believing and proving that true results are achieved by default of nutritionally balanced formulas coupled with customer loyalty is the core of their philosophy. This relationship continually allows for each line in the Raw.Ceuticals brand to go beyond natural and chemical free. These products are a concerted effort to bridge the gap between perception of the natural products industry and the reality of solution driven regimes - especially as it pertains to acne. Whether it is their full line of clean color cosmetics, skin solutions, or professional strength aging and sun protection lines, they strive to provide the cleanest, most purpose driven products on the market. They challenge themselves to use only what is necessary to be eco-efficient. To maintain ingredient integrity that makes transparency a simple extension in their philosophy.
