From the Shea Moisture Family to Yours
Shea Moisture was grown from the ground up on the legacy of Sofi Tucker, the daughter of healers in Sierra Leone and a widowed mother at 19. Grandma Sofi hand-made shea butter, African black soap, and other natural remedies, selling them in local villages to support her family. Her salves and soaps were soon sought after across the countryside - and four generations later, in the hands of her grandson Richelieu Dennis, her recipes and wisdom form the heart of Shea Moisture. Today, every one of the Shea Moisture formulas harness the healing power of Shea Butter and the best of Mother Nature to nourish every member of your family, body, and soul.
Shea Moisture’s inspiring story and amazing products continue to flourish - natural is the new norm, and Shea Moisture is proud to be eco-friendly and organic since 1912. The media has noticed, too. Shea Moisture has won accolades and awards from Allure, Natural Health, Prevention, Parents, Esquire, Life & Style, Essence, All You, Ebony, Healing Lifestyles & Spas, RealBeauty.com, and Shecky’s.
What Shea Moisture Has Grown to Stand For
At Shea Moisture, their mission is multi-cultivated: To make better-for-you beauty, hair, and skin care products with certified organic and natural ingredients, always be eco-friendly, cruelty-free, and fair-trade. They give back the goodness by supporting charitable organizations and women in under-served communities globally, across the United States and in their local community.
- Organic & Natural Ingredients
- Supports Charitable Organizations
Giving Back Globally & Showing Love Locally
Shea Moisture created The Sofi Tucker Foundation to support the empowerment of women - donating to and sourcing ingredients from global women-run co-ops - as well as charitable organizations around the world, including The Liberian Education Fund for the Todee Mission, which provides education and room and board for impoverished children in Africa. They also support Homecoming Farm and Sofia Garden, which grows certified organic food for shelters and soup kitchens in their Long Island community.
Certified Fair Trade & Organic Ingredients
Shea Moisture Organic products are made from all-natural and organic herbs, oils, butters, and fruits, purchased through Fair Trade practices and manufactured utilizing sustainable methods. These key cultural ingredients and rituals are steeped in history and originate from North America, Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and South America.
Eco-Friendly, Cruelty-Free, & Fair Trade Set the Stage
In an era of outsourcing, Shea Moisture is proud to create in their own communities. They make their products at a local factory in Amityville, NY. Their iconic Shea Butter is ethically sourced from women’s co-ops in Northern Ghana - empowering women just like Sofi. Their bottles and jars are made from recycled materials; their packing and shipping materials are too, whenever possible. And their products are tested only on willing family and friends - never on animals.
Shea Moisture Features Certified Organic Ingredients
For Grandma Sofi’s family recipes, Shea Moisture uses nothing but the best in their products, including natural, certified organic, and ethically sourced ingredients that help solve hair & skin concerns. Here are some of them:
Raw Shea Butter (Butyrospermum Parkii and Vitellaria Paradoxa)
Replete with essential fatty acids famous for their moisturizing and rejuvenating properties, unrefined Raw Shea Butter luxuriates the skin. First cultivated in western and central Africa, Raw Shea Butter is made by grinding, roasting, and kneading the majestic shea tree's ripened fruit.
- A natural humectant, Raw Shea Butter intensely hydrates and protects skin by acting as a natural moisture barrier.
- Rich in the antioxidant Vitamins E and A, Raw Shea Butter helps to fight signs of premature aging caused by free radicals.
- A thick emollient, Raw Shea Butter soothes chapped skin and aids in reducing symptoms of eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis.
Coconut Oil (Cocos Nucifera)
First derived centuries ago in the tropics, coconut oil is still the quintessential beauty potion today. Sweet and nutty in aroma, it does quadruple duty as a protein booster, softener, hydrator, and sealant for hair. When massaged into the scalp, coconut oil helps encourage hair growth, combat flaking, and calm irritation. Chock full of antioxidants, it’s a therapeutic skin moisturizer that aids in alleviating dryness, keeping skin supple, and promoting elasticity to reduce the appearance of stretch marks.
- Coconut Oil remains one of the few oils able to penetrate the hair shaft, adding strength and shine to frizzy and/or dry hair.
- Coconut Oil reduces friction in hair, and helps undo knots and tangles, as well as reduces breakage.
- It aids in keeping skin supple and diminishing the appearance of fine lines.
- Due to its fatty acid content, Coconut Oil helps to improve skin elasticity and minimize the appearance of stretch marks.
Argan Oil (Argania Spinosa)
Culled from the nuts of the Argan tree found only in Morocco, this rare beauty boosting oil is a nourishing emollient packed with vitamin E, antioxidants, and essential lipids that naturally help protect skin, minimize the appearance of lines and combat dryness. Easily absorbed in the skin, the potent moisturizer also smoothes and strengthens cuticles, while softening hands. As a hair treatment, Argan Oil aids in taming frizz, adds shine, and seals in precious moisture.
- Argan Oil’s essential fatty acids and antioxidants minimize the signs of aging.
- Seals in moisture and hydrates dull, dry skin.
- Adds luster, shine and elasticity to dry, damaged hair.
- Argan Oil gently nourishes and protects the sensitive and delicate skin of babies and newborns.
Frankincense (Boswellia Sacra)
Seeped from the Boswellia tree and steam distilled, Frankincense soothes and inspires with its signature spicy, earthy aroma. Used medicinally since 500 BC and a gift fit for a King, its renowned restorative qualities and aromatic fragrance have made it a highly coveted beauty ingredient.
- Frankincense aids in reducing inflammation, dark circles, and bags under the eyes, while improving circulation.
- Frankincense’s anti-inflammatory properties help clear blemishes and skin irritation.
- Helps to even and firm skin tone.
- Its aromatherapeutic benefits assist in calming and soothing the senses and nerves.
Myrrh (Commiphora Myrrha)
- A secret weapon against wrinkles, Myrrh hydrates skin and helps to improve tone and texture.
- Its natural anti-bacterial and antiseptic properties aid in soothing and relieving breakouts, skin irritation, chapped and cracked skin.
- Naturally aromatic, beautifully fragrant Myrrh nurtures both the skin and senses.
Baobab Oil (Adansonia Digitata)
The Baobab tree originated in the savannas of Africa and India over two millennia ago. Known as “the upside-down tree,” the Baobab tree yields abundant resources to indigenous communities including water in the trunk and ripe fruits rich in calcium. Seeds plucked from the Baobab Tree turn into Baobab Extract rich in Vitamins A, D, E, and F and Omega-3 fatty acids.
- Baobab Oil’s high concentration of nutrients aid in repairing damage to hair and skin, while intensely moisturizing and softening.
- Due to its fatty acid content, Baobab Oil improves skin tone and elasticity. It’s ideal for use during pregnancy to help prevent stretch marks.
- Light, highly emollient oil works beautifully to help soften the appearance of fine lines around the eyes and lips.

Shea Moisture Causes
The Sofi Tucker Foundation
Founded by the owners of Sundial Brands in 2012, and incorporated as a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit, public charity, the Sofi Tucker Foundation supports causes inspired by the woman whose life’s work forms the basis for Sundial Brands products. In 1912, as a young widow, Sofi Tucker sold African Black Soap and hand crafted Shea Butter based skin products in the village market and throughout the countryside of Bonthe, Sierra Leone. In her memory, the foundation provides financial grants to organizations that seek to economically empower women, their families and communities in the United States and in Africa.
Traditional Hand Crafted Shea Butter Processing Cooperatives
Sundial Brands sources raw Shea Butter from five cooperative groups consisting of 250 women in the Northern Region of Ghana in West Africa. In addition to buying Shea Butter from the cooperatives and paying an “ethical wage premium” to ensure the women earn a fair wage from doing business with Sundial Brands, they also have a community commerce program that provides equipment and facility refurbishments for all the cooperatives. Sundial is also helping introduce energy saving practices that reduce the need for firewood and water which makes Shea butter processing more efficient, cost effective, and more environmentally friendly. For the cooperatives, this results in increased profits for the members and improved livelihoods.
The Todee Mission School of Liberia
The Todee Mission School was founded in 1945. During Liberia's civil crisis from 1990 until 2004, the Mission was looted and devastated. In 2006 a renovation was started through the benevolence of church members in Virginia and Mr. and Mrs. Carney Johnson. Todee became their project to help rebuild Liberia. Mrs. Ophelia Johnson is the Board Chairwoman and guiding light of the Mission. Since then, the Todee School has grown to 110 students from 13 counties in Liberia. There are 57 boys and 53 girls attending classes from Pre-K to 9th grade. Perched on a rolling hill in northern Montserrado County, the Mission owns 200 acres of land that abuts the Firestone rubber plantation. The school is accredited by the Liberia’s Ministry of Education. Students engage in academic curriculums, vocational classes, and life skills training. Many of Todee's students are boarders and the Mission is their home. It is the school's policy to not turn a child away if their parents or family cannot pay tuition. Most students are paid through scholarships, or through in-kind contributions of food, staples, and supplies.
Homecoming Farm and Sophia's Garden
