CALCULATE YOUR BODY MASS INDEX – BMI -Using the U.S. Government Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Approved Formula.
Calculating BMI is the best and quickest method for assessment of weight categories that may lead to health problems. All you need to know is your height and weight. Keep the calculator in your gym bag or bathroom and the next time you weight yourself, get your BMI in a snap!

      What is BMI?
Calculating BMI is one of the best methods for population assessment of overweight and obesity. It is a useful screening tool to identify possible weight categories that may lead to health problems for adults. BMI calculations are recommended and approved by the United States Department of Health and Human Services’ Centers for Disease, Control, and Prevention (CDC).
BMI can be considered an alternative for direct measures of body fat. The following chart contains the published and accepted BMI categories from the CDC:

more body fat than men, and older people, on average, tend to have more body fat because of increased muscularity rather than increased body fatness. Although some people with a BMI in the overweight range (from 25.0 to 29.9) may not have excess body fatness, most people with a BMI in the obese range (equal to or greater than 30) will have increased levels of body fatness.

CALCULATE YOUR BODY FAT % - Military Precision with ANY Tape Measure.

Calculating Body Fat % is simple and accurate using the U.S. Navy's and Department of Defense techniques. Simply measure 2 or 3 sites using the most accurate, easiest, and consistent method in the world.
Tens of thousands of armed services personnel around the globe are routinely measured for body fat and physical readiness standards using the simplest tool in the world – a tape measure!

HOW TO USE A TAPE MEASURE TO MEASURE BODY FAT:

Tape measures are used in the United States Armed Forces and other military throughout the world to measure body fat %. The most common way to measure body fat is the U.S. Navy (and U.S. Department of Defense) method, as tens of thousands of men and women are tested yearly for physical fitness and physical readiness tests. The Tonus Body mass Calculator performs the calculations for you once you enter your measurements!

Keep in mind the following information when using your tape measure:
      • 1. Stand relaxed, with your feet together.
      • 2. Your arms should be hanging naturally at the sides, if someone else takes your measurements.
      • 3. You should be looking straight ahead
      • 4. The tape should be level and horizontal all the way around the measurement area. An unlevel tape will give an incorrect reading.
      • 5. :" ":eck. Measure the neck circumference against the skin at a point just below the larynx (Adam’s Apple). Look straight ahead, shoulders down (not hunched) and have the tape as close to horizontal as possible.
Abdomen. Measure abdominal circumference against the skin at the navel (belly button), level and parallel to the floor. Relax and record the measurement at the end of a normal, relaxed exhale.
Height. Your height measurement should be taken while standing on a flat surface, without shoes, looking straight ahead, and standing straight, as if at “attention.”

LOCATION FOR TAPE MEASURE MEASUREMENTS - FEMALES:

Neck. Measure the neck circumference against the skin at a point just below the larynx (Adam’s Apple). Look straight ahead, shoulders down (not hunched) and have the tape as close to horizontal as possible.
Waist. Measure the natural waist circumference against the skin, at the point of minimal abdominal circumference, usually located about the halfway between the navel (belly button) and the lower end of the sternum (breast bone). When you cannot easily see this site, take several measurements at probable sites and use the smallest value. Be sure that the tape is level and parallel to the floor. Relax and record the measurement at the end of a normal, relaxed exhale.
Hips. Measure the hip circumference against the skin by placing the tape around the hips so that it passes over the greatest protrusion of your gluteus muscles (buttocks). Be sure that the tape is level and parallel to the floor. If you are not comfortable placing the tape on the skin, please wear a thin layer of clothing or apply sufficient tension on the tape to minimize the effect of thicker clothing.
Height. Your height measurement should be taken while standing on a flat surface, without shoes, looking straight ahead, and standing straight, as if at “attention.”

CALCULATE YOUR BODY FAT % - With ANY Body Fat Caliper.
Bodybuilders, Sports Medicine Doctors, and Personal Trainers use the most accurate 3-site (Jackson and Pollack) body fat formulas and techniques, especially for active adults. Any caliper can be used with the Tonus Body Mass Calculator.

HOW TO USE A BODY FAT CALIPER TO MEASURE BODY FAT:

These are general instructions for using body fat calipers. Please see your caliper’s instructionmanual for specific instructions. If you are obese and have difficulty grabbing a skinfold, it isrecommended to use the Navy tape measure method.
        1. Note that all skinfold measurements are taken on the right side of the body, andstanding upright and relaxed.
      • 2. Place the caliper in your right hand.
      • 3. With your fingers about 2-3 inches apart, gently grasp the first skinfold with the thumband index finger of your left hand. Then pull the skinfold away from your body.
      • 4. With your right hand, place caliper tips over the skinfold 1 cm (about 1/2 inch) awayfrom thumb and finger, perpendicular to the skinfold. The caliper heads should behalfway between crest and base of fold.
      • 5. Gently begin to apply caliper pressure. Keep the fold elevated, and maintain the pinchwith your thumb and index finger as you allow the caliper reading to stabilize.
      • 6. Read the measurement within 1-3 seconds.
      • 7. Record the measurement to nearest 0.5 mm,:" ":core of the closest 2 values. You wantto have consistent readings for the Tonus Body Mass Calculator to give you the mostaccurate results.

LOCATIONS FOR CALIPER MEASUREMENTS – MALES

Abdomen: Take the measurement on a VERTICAL skinfold taken 2 cm (about 3/4 of an inch) tothe right of the navel (belly button).
Thigh: Take the measurement on a VERTICAL skinfold taken in the middle of the thigh, halfwaybetween the top of the thigh and your knee cap.

LOCATIONS FOR CALIPER MEASUREMENTS - FEMALESSuprailiac: Take the measurement on a DIAGONAL skinfold just above the front, forward part ofyour hip bone.
Thigh: Take the measurement on a VERTICAL skinfold taken in the middle of the thigh, halfwaybetween the crease of your groin and the top of your knee cap.

CALCULATE YOUR LEAN BODY MASS –Distinguish Between Pounds of Fat and Pounds of Muscle.

Once Tonus calculates your body fat %, it will then provide you with your lean body mass and then BMI. Weight alone is not a clear indicator of good health because it does not distinguish between pounds that come from body fat and those that come from lean body mass or muscle.
Lean Body Mass is the best way to gauge your muscle mass improvement through working out and is your total weight less your body fat weight. It is good to know this number as you can track pounds (or Kg) of muscle that you are adding.
