    Frequently Asked Questions:

I like to recycle as much packaging as I can. What materials are used in Tom's of Maine's product packaging?
At Tom's of Maine, they make an effort to package their products in ways that respect nature. Tom's of Maine's Mission encourages them "To be distinctive in products and policies which honor and sustain the natural world." Researching packaging to improve its recyclability is something that Tom's of Maine does on a continual basis. Tom's of Maine appreciates your sharing in their concern for the environment and thanks you for recycling their packaging when able to do so.

I've heard both good and bad things about the use of fluoride. Why does Tom’s of Maine use this ingredient?
Most of the debate surrounding fluoride has to do with the controversy around whether or not municipalities should fluoridate their water supplies. While Tom's of Maine doesn't want to get into that debate here, they can certainly tell you about the use and safety of fluoride in their toothpaste and mouthwash. Tom's of Maine uses this ingredient because fluoride is a proven decay preventative that has been found safe and effective by the Food and Drug Administration. Tom's of Maine also realizes that not everyone wants or needs fluoride in their oral care products, so they also offer toothpaste and mouthwash without fluoride.

Why did Tom's of Maine change their toothpaste tube material?
Based on feedback from consumers like you, Tom's of Maine has been searching for years for a better alternative to their aluminum tube, one that both improved consumer satisfaction and met their Stewardship Model Standards. Tom's of Maine tested a plastic "laminate" tube with consumers, and they found it to be more appealing and easier to use than their previous tube. Tom's laminate tube does not crack, which reduces the waste of toothpaste being left in the tube or leaking out of the tube; is easier to squeeze, allowing for you to dispense more of the toothpaste from the tube; and has a foil seal to protect against tampering. Manufacturing laminate tubes requires less energy than the manufacture of aluminum tubes. And finally, this tube weighs less than Tom's of Maine's previous aluminum tube, saving energy when the products are shipped. So - after many years of using an aluminum tube, Tom's of Maine is moving to laminate. Tom's of Maine welcomes your feedback on the new tube, and thanks you for being a loyal Tom's of Maine consumer.

Does this new tube also signal a formula change?
Tom's of Maine's packaging change gave them the opportunity to improve some of their flavors to better meet their consumer needs! Tom's of Maine's natural flavor levels may have changed slightly but they still deliver the same great brushing experience you have come to expect from Tom's of Maine. Nothing else in the formulas has changed.

What is xylitol and why does Tom's of Maine use it?
Xylitol is a noncariogenic sweetener usually made from birch tree pulp, which is a byproduct of the paper industry. Instead of the byproduct ending up in the waste stream, it is recycled into a useful ingredient. Xylitol can also be made from corn. Because xylitol is a naturally derived noncariogenic sweetener, it provides sweetness without using an artificial sweetener like saccharin. Tom's of Maine does not use artificial sweeteners (saccharin) in any of their products and xylitol enhances the taste of their natural flavors and helps round out the flavor of their minty toothpastes and mouthwashes.

Beyond toothpaste, xylitol has been widely used in confection products as well. The National Institute of Health, in their 2001 Consensus Statement Diagnosis and Management of Caries Throughout Life, stated that "Noncariogenic sweeteners have been delivered to teeth as constituents of chewing gum, hard candy, and dentifrices. The evidence for both sorbitol and xylitol is positive, although the evidence for xylitol is stronger. Based on xylitol's noncariogenic status, it has been widely recognized by dental professionals in both oral care products as well as sugarless chewing gum.

Warning to dog owners! Canine ingestion of xylitol promotes the release of insulin and wreaks havoc with a dog's normal glucose levels, causing hypoglycemia-in other words, a sugar crash. The dose of xylitol will affect the severity of the response, but that dose is also affected by the animal's own ability to produce insulin and its sugar metabolism rates. For more information, see the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Are Tom's of Maine products really made in Maine?
Most of Tom's of Maine's products are made in Maine, with the exception of their bar soaps (which are made the Northeastern United States), flossing ribbon (which is made in the Dominican Republic and packaged in Maine), and their body wash (which is made in Canada). All Tom's of Maine products, regardless of their manufacturing location, are made to Tom's of Maine's specifications and monitored for quality.

Why does Tom's of Maine use carrageenan in their toothpaste?
Tom's of Maine uses food-grade carrageenan, a natural substance used as a binder in foods like ice cream, puddings, etc., as the gelling agent in some of their toothpaste.

Are Tom's of Maine products hypoallergenic?
Natural products are not inherently hypoallergenic. While the majority of people are able to use and enjoy Tom's of Maine products; there are some who, because of individual body chemistries, may not be able to use them. For example, a strawberry-even an organically-grown strawberry-although 100% natural, is a potential allergen for a certain percentage of the population. If you have used Tom's of Maine's product and you feel you may be sensitive or allergic to it in some way, please contact Tom's of Maine.

Are Tom's of Maine products Kosher?
All Tom's of Maine products except their bar soaps are manufactured under the supervision and guidelines of the Kashruth Division of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations and are certified as kosher and pareve. Please note, all Tom's of Maine deodorants (roll-on, crystals, and sticks) are Kosher for Passover. Please look for the Orthodox Union's Kosher symbol on Tom's of Maine product packaging or product page to indicate whether or not a specific product is Kosher.

Is Tom's of Maine actually in Maine? What's the weather like up there?
Yes, Tom's of Maine is in Maine! Their offices have been in Kennebunk, Maine, on the southern coast of the state, since the company was founded in 1970. Tom's of Maine also makes most of their products in Maine, in their factory in Sanford, Maine, which is just the next town over from Kennebunk. As for weather, it's beautiful, warm, breezy, and generally not humid in summer; colorful and crisp in autumn; cold and snowy in winter; and muddy in the spring (Tom's of Maine calls it "mud season"). Yes, Tom's of Maine is actually in Maine!

Tell me more about Tom's of Maine's use of glycerin?
Tom's of Maine uses glycerin to give body and consistency to their oral care products and to help the skin attract and retain its own natural moisture in their body care products.

    What is Glycerin?
Glycerin is an emollient, an ingredient that helps to balance or maintain moisture levels. It is commonly derived from oils or created as a by-product of soap. These oils can be vegetable, animal, or petroleum in origin. Tom's of Maine's glycerin is domestically sourced and derived from soybean oil, corn oil, canola oil, coconut, palm kernel oil, and/or palm oils. It does not contain diethylene glycol, and is not genetically modified.

    What does Glycerin do?
Oral Care Glycerin adds body and consistency to Tom's of Maine oral care products and prevents them from drying out. Glycerin leaves a pleasant feel in the mouth and can contribute a flavor-extending effect. It also helps to preserve products. Included at higher levels in Tom's of Maine's baking soda mouthwash line, glycerin’s naturally mild sweetness can be perceived, adding smoothness to the flavor. Body Care Glycerin is actually part of the skin’s own natural lipid structure. As a moisturizing ingredient, glycerin helps the skin to attract and retain its own natural moisture, leaving it feeling soft. Rather than sitting on top of the skin, glycerin softens the skin while permitting it to breathe.

What are the risks of using Glycerin?
Glycerin has a long history of safe use in personal care products. It is on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s list of ingredients that are Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS). Tom's of Maine recognizes that no two people are alike, and even with pure and natural ingredients, some individuals may develop an allergic reaction that is unique to them. As with any product, be sure to discontinue use if you experience discomfort or other indications that the product may not be appropriate for your individual body chemistry.

Does Tom's of Maine use parabens?
Tom's of Maine does not use parabens in any of their natural care products.

Are Tom's of Maine products vegan?
Most of Tom's of Maine's products are vegan. However, some are not. If they contain beeswax (present in their flossing products) or propolis (in some of their toothpastes) they are not considered vegan, because these ingredients are sourced from bee hives.

Aren't the beeswax used in Tom's of Maine's floss and the propolis used in their toothpaste considered animal ingredients?
Both the beeswax and the propolis are bee products. These ingredients are removed from the hive and neither the bees nor the hives are harmed in any way during this process. When the bees return to the hive, they produce more wax and more propolis. In fact, even if these were not harvested, the bees would still make more upon returning. While some people do consider these ingredients to be animal derivatives, others do not.

Why does Tom's of Maine use baking soda?
Tom's of Maine uses baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) in some of their toothpaste and mouthwash products for the distinctive clean, fresh flavor it provides.

    What is Sodium Bicarbonate/Baking Soda?
Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3), commonly known as baking soda, is a time-honored odor absorber and acid neutralizer. Baking soda can be found as a naturally occurring compound, but is more frequently manufactured from other naturally derived materials. Baking soda can be produced by the reaction of carbon dioxide and soda ash, a naturally occurring mineral.

What does Sodium Bicarbonate/Baking Soda do?
Baking soda's odor-inhibiting and acid-neutralizing properties are well-known to grandmothers and dentists alike. Because it is a mild abrasive, baking soda is also effective in removing plaque when used in conjunction with a responsible brushing regimen.

What are the alternatives to Sodium Bicarbonate/Baking Soda?
For many years, the form of baking soda most widely available for consumer products was manufactured from refined minerals that were mined from the earth. While this form of baking soda is natural, it requires several processing steps to create. Tom's of Maine Peppermint Baking Soda toothpaste was developed and brought to market at a time when this form of baking soda was the only commercially viable source. At Tom's of Maine, they are always searching for natural ingredients that are minimally processed. Tom's of Maine's Research and Product Development Team has found that it is now possible to obtain commercial quantities of food-grade nahcolite, a naturally occurring form of baking soda. Consequently, Tom's of Maine formulates their baking soda toothpaste and mouthwash to include nahcolite, the most natural form of baking soda available.

What are the risks of using Sodium Bicarbonate/Baking Soda?
Baking soda has no known toxicity or carcinogenicity. It has a long history of safe use and is Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration.

How abrasive is Tom's of Maine toothpaste?
Abrasives are included in toothpaste to help clean the teeth of plaque and residual food particles during brushing. The abrasion of a toothpaste is a function of both the relative hardness of the abrasive as well as its particle size and shape. But there are also other factors that contribute to the total abrasion levels experienced in brushing besides just the toothpaste used. For instance, the hardness of your toothbrush bristles and toothbrushing technique also affect the total abrasion level that you experience.

ISO (the International Organization for Standardization), a worldwide federation of national standards bodies, has established an International Standard for measuring abrasivity and an upper dentin abrasion limit (ISO 11609:1995, "Dentistry, Toothpastes, Requirements, test methods and marking.") Dentin is the main mineralized part of your tooth which lies just beneath the enamel surface.) All of Tom's of Maine's toothpastes fall under the relative dentin abrasion (RDA) upper limit of 250. Tom's of Maine recommends that you discuss abrasion levels with your dental care professional to determine what is best for you.

Does Tom's of Maine use phthalates in their products?
No, Tom's of Maine does not use phthalates in any of their products.

    Committed to Transparency
Since 1981, Tom's of Maine has proudly shared their ingredients along with their purpose and source so you'll know the goodness you're getting.

    Good Science: Ingredients
Showing what they're made of. You've always believed it's what's inside that counts. Tom's of Maine hopes you'll apply that same rule to their products. Tom's of Maine strives to use naturally sourced, wholesome ingredients that just make you feel right when you choose them. Tom's of Maine is proud of their ingredients and you deserve to be informed. Every ingredient in their products is posted on their website along with their reason for using it and where it's sourced. That's goodness you can believe in!

    • Sourcing - Tom's of Maine strives to use high-quality ingredients that are sourced in nature and subject to minimal processing. The high quality ingredients they use are naturally sourced and subject to minimal processing, and their ingredient suppliers must meet Tom's of Maine's strict guidelines for safety, purity, consistency, and social/environmental sensitivity. Tom's of Maine also seeks out organic farms that practice sustainable harvesting.
    • Manufacturing - As a Maine based company, Tom's of Maine constantly strives to improve their sustainability practices at every level of their operations. Since 2006, 100% of the electricity consumption at their factory has been offset by investing in wind energy credits supplied by Green-e, a certified, nationally recognized symbol of independently verified renewable energy. This eliminates production of 1.5 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions annually — the equivalent of planting 214 acres of trees! Tom's of Maine also purchases renewable energy (hydro and biomass) for their offices.
    • Packaging - Tom's of Maine products and packaging are designed in accordance with their Stewardship Model and their sustainability and recyclability are actively reviewed in the process. Tom's of Maine strives to maximize the recycled and recyclable content of their products and packaging. They use packaging made of post-consumer recycled paper board. They also print their corrugated cases with waste ink and use vegetable-based inks on all of their professionally printed materials and packaging.

What Tom's of Maine Doesn't Use In Their Products:

Artificial colors - Because Tom's of Maine does not add artificial colors, the appearance of their products may vary from batch to batch.

Artificial flavors or fragrances - Tom's of Maine does not use any synthetic flavors, colors, or fragrances. Their customers prefer the fresh, natural taste and smell of herbs, fruits, and flowers (or no fragrance at all!).

Artificial preservatives (EDTA, formaldehyde, parabens, etc.) - Natural preservatives work as well or better than artificial alternatives. For example, Tom's of Maine uses rosemary to help guard freshness in their soaps.

Animal ingredients - Tom's of Maine's support of non-animal-testing models also includes the belief that they don't need to use animal ingredients to create effective products. Just one example: glycerin, used in toothpastes and soaps, is often made from animal ingredients, but theirs is vegetable-based.

Ethylene glycol - Ethylene glycol can be found in hair care products and facial/body washes as a fragrance ingredient, a solvent, and as an aid in controlling viscosity. Tom's of Maine uses water and ingredients derived from corn, coconut and palm kernel oils, and sea salt to control consistency in their body washes, and natural fragrances in all of their products.

Gluten - Aside from their liquid hand soap and body wash, which contain wheat protein, all other Tom's of Maine products are gluten-free. They do not use alcohol, casein or caseinate, MSG, wheat, oats, barley, rye, malt, spelt, kamut, HPP, or HVP. None of their flavor oils are grain-distilled. They do not use flour of any kind in their manufacturing process for conveyor belts or for any other purpose, and their containers are not dusted with flour before filling.

Grapefruit seed extract - Studies have shown that natural preparations of this ingredient do not show antimicrobial activity; instead, it is commercial preparations that include synthetic antimicrobials or preservatives that show antimicrobial activity due to those artificial ingredients. Tom's of Maine instead uses hops for their natural antimicrobial action in their deodorants.

Parabens - Parabens are used as fragrance ingredients or as preservatives. Tom's of Maine relies instead on natural preservatives and ingredients.

Peroxides - Tom's of Maine does not use bleach or peroxide in their whitening toothpastes; they instead use silica from sand to clean your teeth and create a whiter appearance.

Phthalates - Phthalates are used to improve the performance of some personal care/cosmetic products (for example, to fix fragrance in a formula), but Tom's of Maine has always avoided this class of ingredient.

Saccharin or other artificial sweeteners - Many conventional toothpastes contain artificial sweeteners; Tom's of Maine's customers prefer a less-sweet natural flavor. Tom's of Maine uses natural sweeteners such as xylitol and rely on the naturally delicious tastes of fruits and herbs to flavor their toothpastes.

Triclosan - Tom's of Maine products do not contain the ingredient triclosan.

Tom's of Maine Also Offers You A Choice:

Aluminum and aluminum-free - Aluminum containing ingredients are required by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to deliver wetness protection in an underarm product. The FDA recognizes 18 different aluminum containing ingredients to help deliver wetness protection. Tom's of Maine uses aluminum chlorohydrate.

Though not an FDA wetness protection ingredient, another aluminum-containing ingredient found in many deodorant products is potassium alum. Potassium alum, is the odor protection ingredient used in many deodorant crystal products like Tom's of Maine's Natural Confidence roll-on. Although these products do not offer wetness protection, they do use an aluminum containing ingredient to help provide odor protection.

Consumers who do not wish to use an aluminum containing underarm product may choose from Tom's of Maine's extensive line of aluminum-free deodorants, which inhibit odor-causing bacteria using hops. These deodorants are some of their most popular products today. Tom's of Maine feels it is important to offer individuals a choice of both wetness and odor protection benefits.

Fluoride and fluoride-free - Fluoride is currently the only toothpaste ingredient recognized by the US Food and Drug Administration to prevent cavities. The FDA recognizes three forms of fluoride: sodium monofluorophosphate, sodium fluoride, and stannous fluoride and regulates the levels at which they can be included in toothpaste formulations.

Consumers who do not wish to use an anticavity toothpaste may choose from Tom's of Maine's line of fluoride-free toothpastes. Tom's of Maine feels it is important to offer individuals a choice and trust that they will work with their dental care professionals to establish an oral care regimen that is right for them.

SLS and SLS-free - Tom's of Maine uses SLS to disperse the ingredients in some of their toothpastes due to its long history of safe use, its lack of odor or taste, and its low level of concentration in their products.

For those of their consumers who prefer to use a toothpaste without SLS, Tom's of Maine also offers a line of SLS-free toothpastes which use glycyrrhizin, derived from licorice root, to foam and disperse ingredients.

    Good Science: Product Certification
    ADA Accepted -
The American Dental Association's Seal of Acceptance, first awarded in 1931, is a trusted symbol of a dental product's safety and effectiveness. In order to win the Seal, manufacturers must submit studies that demonstrate equivalent safety and effectiveness results to those of a clinically tested product; maintain manufacturing and laboratory facilities up to established safety and purity standards; and submit ingredient lists and product information for review and approval.

In 1995, Tom's of Maine's original formula with fluoride was deemed safe and effective by the American Dental Association (ADA), becoming the first natural toothpaste to bear the ADA's Seal of Acceptance. Since then, many more of their products have earned the Seal.

Cruelty-Free Certification - People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) created the cruelty-free certification to help consumers identify those companies that do not test on animals or use animal ingredients. Participating companies must complete a short questionnaire and sign a statement of assurance before being approved as cruelty-free.

Leaping Bunny Program - The Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics' (CCIC) Leaping Bunny Program administers a cruelty-free standard and the internationally recognized Leaping Bunny Logo for companies producing cosmetic, personal care, and household products. The Leaping Bunny Program provides the best assurance that no new animal testing is used in any phase of product development by the company, its laboratories, or suppliers. Kosher Certified - Tom's of Maine products have carried the kosher certification since 1990. With the exception of bar soap, their products are manufactured under the supervision of the Kashruth Division of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations and are certified as kosher and pareve. Please note, however, that only Tom's of Maine's deodorants are kosher for Passover, and that some new products may not yet bear the OU Kosher symbol.

Halal Endorsement - Halal is an Arabic word meaning lawful or permitted. Since 2006, all Tom’s of Maine products have carried the Halal endorsement, with the exception of their bar soaps and their new Wicked Fresh! Mouthwash. The Halal endorsement certifies that they are made in accordance with Islamic guidelines under the supervision of the Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America (IFANCA).

    Suggested Use
Helps remove plaque build-up with regular brushing. To open, twist off cap and remove foil seal. Brush thoroughly, preferably after each meal but at least twice a day, or as directed by a dentist or physician.

    Warnings

Do not use if foil seal is not intact.
