The bad stuff in un-natural soap is obvious, but some wonderers wonder, "Why use goat's milk?" Well, there's an udder difference in the pH balance of goat's milk. Goat's milk makes our natural soap more akin to the skin than anything else - not too alkaline, not too acidic, but just right. So it doesn't dry skin or leave it feeling oily.

Is their soap made using the Cold Process Method?
Yes, they make soap the old fashioned way-from scratch. Zum Bars are made from a combination of fats (natural oils) with a lye solution until a process of saponification takes place. Saponification is a chemical process, which converts a fat into soap by reaction with an alkali (also known as "lye"). Saponification occurs as the raw materials are combined, stirred and neutralized. As a result of this process, a very important by product emerges-Glycerin, which is a natural skin softener and the foundation of all natural soap.

Why goats milk?
Goats milk is naturally ultra-moisturizing. Goats milk soap contains capric, caprylic and capronic acids and natural occurring triglycerides. Otherwise known as good fats. The result is a pH level that is good for healthy human hair and skin, while commercial soap can dry out the skin to the point at which it feels taut and itchy. The oil glands are forced to counteract, overproducing oils in an attempt to rebalance the pH of the skin. The result can be oily skin, clogged pores, blackheads and yuck - pimples.

Do they use lye in their soap?
Yes, they do use lye in their soap making process. They use sodium hydroxide in our soaps. All soaps (excluding detergent bars, which are totally synthetic and chemical laden) are made with lye but no lye is left in the finished soap. Our soaps are balanced so the chemical reaction has the correct amounts of both lye and oil for a balanced reaction. The result is that our soap is very close to neutral.

What is the burn time on their candles?
Their Zum Glow candles burn for approx. 30 hours and the mini Zum Glows burn for approx. 10-12 hours.

How do they color their soaps?
They use ultramarines and iron oxides for our colorants. They never use FD&C colorings in any of our products. All of the colors in the soaps are all scented the same. For instance, with lavender-mint the blue is not lavender and the green is not mint. The same goes for sandalwood-citrus. Both colors are scented the same.

Do they test their products on animals?
They do not test our products on animals. They love to test them on ourselves and our friends and family.

What are the ingredients in their products?
They use the most awesome ingredients made from the earth! They have a full listing of ingredients posted on our website.

What do they use as preservatives?
For the products that require preservatives, they use tocopherol (vitamin e), rosemary oleoresin and potassium sorbate.

Where does shea butter come from?
Their shea butter is extracted from the nut of the Karite tree in Africa. No solvents or hexane are used in this process.

What is the shelf life of their products?
Because our products are all natural it is best to use them up. I've found Zum Bars that I had tucked away in a drawer for two years and they are wonderful! The scent fades over time but it is still a great bar of soap. The lotions should probably be used within a year of the purchase date. Keep all products out of direct sunlight and heat. You can even put them in the refrigerator to extend their shelf life.

What is the best soap for my face?
They highly recommend our Zum Lab Facial Soaps which were created specifically for the face. But of course the Oatmeal-Lavender and the Wee Bar make great facial soaps too. Lemongrass, Tea Tree-Citrus, and Lime-Basil are great for oily skin.

Do they have any vegan products?
Zum Glow, Zum Body, Zum Tub, Zum Mist, Zum Oil, eau de zum, ZAR aftershave tonic and roll-on cologne are all vegan products.

Some retailers don't charge for shipping. Why is their shipping so high?
Unlike Amazon.com, Lands End or Pottery Barn they are a very small company and have negotiated the best rate possible with FedEx, which for us is the most economical and efficient way to ship. They feel that our shipping rates are comparable with major catalog retailers. They do not look at shipping as a profit center and actually lose thousands of dollars in shipping costs every year. Which for a company our size really hurts! They are charged extra for every residential delivery along with a penalty if the customer simply lists, for example "Main" as their address rather than "Main Street". There are also fuel surcharges for most deliveries. As they grow and ship more boxes they will be able to negotiate a better rate with FedEx and will definitely pass that on to our customers.

Where did they get the name "zum"?
Zum is simply a play on the word "some". As in "This sure is "zum" bar of soap!"
