What is SaviSeed?
When they say SaviSeed, they mean premium, organic sacha inchi seeds - the super food of the ancient Inca peoples. Not just your average seed, sacha inchi seeds also known as the Inca Peanut are native to the Amazon rainforest and have been cultivated and consumed for centuries in Peru. SaviSeeds are the fruit of sacha inchi plants, herbaceous vines that produce star-shaped green pods which yield edible seeds - SaviSeeds. Their premium SaviSeeds are sustainably and organically grown and proudly produced in partnership with indigenous Peruvian farmers.
SaviSeed brings the wonders of an ancient Peruvian food source to you. Also known as the Inca Peanut, sacha inchi's scientific name is Plukenetia volubilis. Sacha inchi has been known by the natives of Peru and other indigenous peoples of the Amazon for centuries. Historians believe the plant has probably been used by the Incas over 3000 years ago, which is evident from the interpretation of the plant on vessels in Incan tombs.
Sacha inchi has been used traditionally by communities in the Amazon in different meals, such as the inchicapi, a regional soup and as cooked seeds ground up in a sauce. The oil and roasted seeds are common ingredients in cities and towns throughout Peru's jungle. It is also used externally by Peruvian people as a rejuvenating cream applied on the skin. This treasure of the Amazon has a rich history which you can now have access to in the form of SaviSeed - the best tasting, richest source of Omega 3!
SaviSeed - How is it grown?
Beneath the high peaks of the Peruvian Andes Mountains lie highland jungles filled with lush vegetation. Amid the many tropical plant species there grow woody, twining vines bearing green pods and small seeds. These shrub-like vines are sacha inchi plants, the source of SaviSeeds. Cultivated in small plantation farms, they grow in rows to a height of 2-3 meters, supported by wooden posts.
The soil in which SaviSeeds are produced is notably rich and full of minerals and nutrients - another reason why they provide so many nutritional benefits. Sacha inchi plants thrive in high humidity, high sunlight exposure and heat. The sacha inchi fruit is a star shaped green pod, covered in 3 layers of shell - with each pod containing 3-7 seeds.
Harvest and Transport
The first crop harvest comes just 7-8 months from the time of planting. After the first harvest, sacha inchi plants produce crops several times throughout the year, and depending on conditions, can produce for as long as ten years. When the sacha inchi pods are ready to pick, they make cracking sounds and turn from green to brown in color. Teams working in fields then pick the star shaped pods from the plants and place into baskets. After being picked, the pods are placed on drying beds (long tables with wire mesh), where they dry in the warm sunshine until the seeds are exposed.
From there, the pods are pressed, removing layers to get to the seed. Once removed, seeds are put into sacks and stored. When sacha inchi farmers have a large enough volume of seeds stored, it's time to bring them to market. The sacks of seed are transported from the farmer's land by cart to Lima, from which they are then imported into Canada
Where does it come from?
The Amazon rainforest is one of the most valuable and important places in the world - in fact, it is the largest forest on the planet representing one-fifth of the world's fresh water and containing thousands of animal and plant species.Sacha inchi plants are native to this amazing rainforest, grown deep in the lowland regions of Peru.
SaviSeeds are the fruit of many harvests. In Peru, farmers grow sacha inchi plants on small plots of land in high and abundant jungle regions, often in addition to their other crops. The yields of many of these small sacha inchi plantations are combined to become SaviSeeds. In this way, the production of SaviSeed allows Peruvian communities to band together, as they collectively raise sacha inchi seeds to earn a living and support their families.
SaviSeeds are the richest source of Omega 3 on the planet! At 7000mg of heart-healthy Omega 3 per one ounce serving, they offer 13 times more Omega 3 than an ounce of wild salmon - and with SaviSeeds, you'll have no fishy aftertaste! You are what you eat. And what you don't.
Told from the onset that a plant-based diet wouldn't cut it on the professional Ironman circuit, Brendan Brazier's nutritional journey as an uninformed plant-powered endurance athlete began with reduced energy levels and the need to eat constantly.
But Brendan's stubborn curiosity persevered and after years of research and experimentation, he discovered what sets a top athlete's performance apart from the competition isn't training or natural ability alone. A big difference is nutrition. After intense study, Brendan created a plant-based, whole food diet that helped him recover faster and train harder - propelling him to become a top professional Ironman triathlete.
Constantly on the road competing, Brendan was challenged by both a lack of time and kitchen space to prepare the carefully composed, nutrient-dense, clean, plant-based meals that gave him his edge. Deep down, he knew there had to be an easier way to get nutrition on-the-go. And he was right. Over time, Brendan's vision led to the formulation of the original all-in-one nutritional shake - now known as Vega One - which ultimately inspired the creation of the complete award-winning Vega line of nutritional supplements.
Vega Guiding Principles for a Raw, Whole Food, Alkaline, Plant-Based Diet
Quite often the simplest solution is the best one. Over the past 50 years, however, Western culture has managed to complicate our approach to diet and its relation to health. Obesity and malnourishment exist simultaneously, while the over-consumption of calorie-rich but nutrient-poor foods drains our energy. To make matters worse, we treat obesity with drugs and fad diets, and combat fatigue with refined carbohydrates, sugar and caffeine. These are short-term solutions that eventually render us energy depleted, over-stimulated, chronically stressed and vulnerable to illness and premature aging.
What can we do to address this problem? Many health experts now believe the solution is to consume primarily plant-based, whole foods-pure and simple as nature intended. Whole foods support all the requirements of a healthy body system, from absorption to elimination.
The challenge with whole foods has always been their relative inconvenience to prepare, compared to the gamut of fast food offerings so readily available to us. Born of the belief that one should not have to compromise between whole food goodness and fast food convenience, Vega products are developed with the following principles in mind:
Plant-based whole foods are the true future of optimal health
"Eat your fruits and vegetables" is one of the most tried and true recommendations for a healthy diet. Plant-based foods are rich in antioxidants, essential vitamins and minerals, enzymes, fiber and phytonutrients. Countless studies support their many health benefits. Vega products are made exclusively from plant-based, whole food ingredients.
Alkaline-forming, plant-based whole foods help build a platform for optimal health
Studies have shown a linkage between an alkaline-forming diet and accelerated growth, development and metabolism1, helping to provide a platform upon which optimal health can be built. In stark contrast to processed food, alkaline-forming foods are nearly exclusively found in the vegetable and fruit groups2 (research has also shown that it is possible to efficiently modify urine pH by diet alone3). Vega products are alkaline-forming2 and 100% plant-based.
Nutrient density is more important than calories
Once your body is supplied with the nourishment it needs, cravings will cease. Consuming nutrient-dense, whole foods is a healthy way to naturally reduce caloric intake, resulting in the creation of a stronger, leaner body. Vega creates products that are nutrient dense, yet relatively low in calories.
What you eat should provide energy, not drain it
Ease of nutrient assimilation is a key benefit of wholesome, natural food. The less energy the body must spend on digestion and assimilation, the more energy it will retain. Enzyme-rich to help with efficient digestion, Vega products offer superior net energy gain.
What you eat should energize through nourishment, not stimulation
Refined foods, refined sugar and caffeine lend temporary energy by stimulating the adrenal glands, creating a brief increase in energy levels but eventually resulting in fatigue. On a day-to-day basis, Vega One, Energizing Smoothie and Vibrancy bars offer a balance of Omega-3, fiber and low-glycemic carbohydrates to provide a constant, enduring supply of energy through nourishment, not stimulation.
For athletes, the Vega Sport system features products with a judicious balance of minimally-refined carbohydrates and gentler sources of caffeine to provide targeted stimulation to fuel activity, while being mindful of post-workout recovery and long-term wellness.
Minimize exposure to sensitivity-aggravating ingredients
Many people-whether they know it or not-have sensitivities to ingredients that are abundant in the modern, processed food diet. These sensitivities can manifest as headaches, mild flu-like symptoms, low energy, and difficulty shedding body fat. Vega products are dairy, gluten and soy free, and contain no artificial flavours, colours or sweeteners.
It is possible to rebuild a younger-feeling body
People who exercise regularly break down cellular tissue during every workout. What you eat serves as the building blocks for cellular restoration. Poor-quality construction materials result in poor-quality structures, and the converse is also true. You literally are what you eat! If regular exercise puts your body in perpetual regeneration mode, you want to give it the highest quality building materials available so your body can rebuild a stronger, younger-feeling version of you.
The nutrient-dense, high net-gain, alkaline-forming nutrition found in plant-based whole foods and superior natural health products like those offered by Vega is truly the best building material available for your body.
What Sustainability Means to Vega
At Vega, they want to change the world. Their passion for plant-based nutrition is as much about empowering health as it is about supporting the health of our planet. But sustainability isn't just about what goes into their products-sustainability must be part of everything they do.
They want to be a company that leaves a net zero carbon footprint. There are no silver bullets-in life, or on Vega's Journey to Zero-but every choice they make matters. Vega lives their commitment to constant improvement by pursuing perfection, one small change at a time.
Their ingredients, packaging, office, suppliers-each of these represents an opportunity to innovate, improve, and bring Vega closer to their goal - the Journey to Zero.
Journey To Zero
It's one thing to say you want to be a company that leaves a net-zero carbon footprint. It's quite another to take real actions toward that goal. Journey to Zero is Vega's name for their process of taking actions and being accountable to this goal. You can't improve what you don't measure. And because Vega means business when it comes to the planet, they treat their carbon footprint as a real indicator of their performance.
Every small change they make is a step on their Journey to Zero-and they take each of them so seriously that they've woven this process of making steps on this journey through the fabric of everything they do:
In 2009, Vega conducted a complete corporate environmental sustainability audit to assess their carbon footprint. They're actively using the results of this audit-Vega's Sustainability Action Plan-to guide their choices on the Journey to Zero.
Since their initial audit, they've made several carbon-reducing changes as part of their Sustainability Action Plan, including transitioning Vega's headquarters to 100% wind-power (via Bullfrog Power), and making strategic operations and logistics improvements.
After making many changes based on their Sustainability Action Plan, they recently reassessed several areas highlighted in their initial audit, comparing the 2012 numbers to their 2009 numbers. The result of Vega's changes? An impressive 46.4% reduction in their carbon footprint.
While they've taken many successful steps on the Journey to Zero, their audit revealed opportunities for other changes they can make to further reduce their carbon footprint. For example, the 2012 numbers showed that packaging materials account for 71% of Vega's carbon footprint-this significant statistic inspired their move to transitioning to 100% post-consumer recycled plastic bottles, beginning in late 2013.
Part of the mission at Vega is to live their commitment to constant improvement by pursuing perfection, one small change at a time. That means they'll be taking actions, measuring the impact, and planning their next steps on the Journey to Zero for as long as they're here to make those steps.
Vega's passion for clean, plant-based nutrition that's good for your body and fuels your healthy, active life isn't the only reason Vega products are exclusively plant-based-it's also a reflection of their commitment to the planet.
Vega's 100% PCR HDPE plastic bottles are still fully recyclable.
Doing Business Sustainably
Every element of Vega's business operations holds opportunity to make more sustainable choices. By choosing manufacturing partners located close to their distribution centers, finished Vega products-heavier and much larger in volume once packaged than the raw materials used to make them-don't have to travel as far before they can be shipped to customers.
