How Alabu is Made

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Soap works best for dry or problem skin?

Alabu finds that what brings the most relief varies from person to person. If the cause of their problem is sensitivities to chemicals, any of their goat milk soap will bring relief. Most people with problem skin use our Tea Tree soap. For those with dry skin our most popular are Baby Me, Buttermilk, Rich, and Oat & Honey.

Why do you use goat milk?
Milk has been used as a cleanser and beauty aid for centuries. Goat milk, however, has special qualities-some that are still not fully understood. It is used universally by people with sensitivities to other types of milk for everything from feeding babies to bathing. The goat milk Alabu uses is fresh, not powdered. Unlike powdered goat milk, fresh goat milk is loaded with vitamins (D, B6, C, E), milk sugars, proteins, & butterfat. Goat milk also contributes a thicker lather to the soap than water (the common alternative), and is a natural source of Alpha-hydroxy acids. Recent studies indicate that Alpha-hydroxy acids rejuvenate your skin making you look and feel smoother and younger.

Why handmade?
Alabu's small batch size and handcrafted production process allows them to create the highest-quality bar of soap around. Glycerin, a naturally occurring moisturizer, is produced in soap and helps draw moisture to your skin. Commodity soap and detergent manufactures process their product to take out the glycerin and sell it as a valuable byproduct. By keeping the natural glycerin in the soap, you get a wonderfully moisturizing bar of soap, that actually moisturizes your skin as you use it.

More and more people are discovering the truth about commodity soaps (go ahead and read the label on any one of them). They are finding out that they are not soaps but actually harsh detergents. Detergents strip oils out of the skin removing the naturally present moisturizing oils along with the soil. This is why you skin feels dry and uncomfortable after bathing.

Handcrafted soaps gently lift the soil on your skin into suspension so it can be washed away. Handcrafted soap leaves glycerin and other moisturizing oils behind making you skin softer and moisturized. After regularly using handcrafted soap you may find that you no longer need to apply lotions and creams after bathing. So why not treat yourself to a bar of handcrafted soap? You skin will thank you for it.

Why not a goat milk shampoo?
A good shampoo is actually quite a bit different from soap. One of the main differences is that it has a lower pH that is more friendly to your hair. One of the problems this creates is that lowering the pH provides an environment in which gram-negative bacteria are able to thrive. Nearly all gram-negative bacteria are harmful. The way most companies deal with this is by putting a synthetic preservative in the shampoo. While using a synthetic preservative is certainly healthier than using a shampoo full of harmful bacteria, it's not something we're planning on doing any time soon. Alabu is currently researching ways to preserve shampoo naturally, but don't have any kind of time frame on when they may release a shampoo.

How is Alabu soap made?
All of their soap is made in small batches. Every batch is guaranteed. They allow our soaps to naturally air dry for at least four weeks. Drying is necessary to make a mild bar of soap and allows the soap to last longer as well. Get the full scoop and a sweet video of our production process over here.

What's different about your soap?
Soap making is a delicate blend of art and science. Because of the temperamental reactions of the ingredients-goat milk, vegetable oils, and alkali-it's very tricky to create a soap that uses goat milk as a base ingredient instead of water, especially fresh goat milk.

Alabu uses something called the cold process method to handcraft our soaps in small batches. This just means that they don't add heat during the soap-making chemical reaction. This helps preserve the naturally occurring properties of the milk and oils we use. Goat milk is rich in proteins, vitamins, and minerals and nourishing to your skin. We do everything possible to preserve these properties. The result; Alabu's soap moisturizes, soothes, and softens your skin naturally. Try a bar. Alabu thinks you will love how it makes you feel!

They are committed to making natural bath and body products that gently yet thoroughly cleanse and moisturize. Their ingredients contain no artificial preservatives or colors. Most people with sensitive skin find they can use our scented products with good results, but for our friends with especially delicate complexions we also offer unscented products.

How much goat milk is in a bar of your soap?
We use farm fresh goat milk. We use no powdered milk, and we add zero water. That means over 1/4 of our handmade soap recipe is pure goat milk and there is almost 1oz of goat milk in each handmade bath bar.

Why do you make soap?
The answer is simple, they like what it does for the skin :). Once you try Alabu's handmade soap and realize what a difference it makes, you'll be hooked, too. Most people find they eliminate or significantly reduce the amount of lotion they use when they start using our handmade soap. No kidding!

Do I need to do anything special to take care of my soap?
You don't have to do anything, but there are a couple of things you can do to get the most out of your soap. Alabu recommends using a soap dish that drains. Your soap will last much longer if it is allowed to breath and "dry" after each use.

What is lye?
Lye is a pretty loosely defined term, but it always means either raw sodium hydroxide, or sodium hydroxide mixed with water. Sodium hydroxide is a strong caustic alkali (or base). This highly alkaline substance is neutralized when combined with fats or oils to form soap. All soap (commodity or handmade) requires sodium hydroxide or another strong alkali to create soap.

Where does the lye go in soap?
Soap is produced when a fatty acid is combined with an alkali (for bar soap, almost always sodium hydroxide A.K.A. lye) in a process called saponification. The alkali causes the fatty acid to be split into two parts: the major fatty part (a carbon chain) and glycerin. Once this happens, sodium joins with the carbon chain to produce soap. Soaps are usually produced by combining fats or oils with lye, soda (Na2CO3). In this process the alkali is used up in the reaction. In our soap, we actually use much less alkali than is required. The result is that there is absolutely zero chance of there being any alkali leftover, and there's also extra moisturizing oils in the bar to help soften, soothe, and moisturizer your skin!

What's the difference between fragrance & essential oils?
Essential Oils are extracted from the plant. Fragrance oils are aroma compounds blended to duplicate a particular fragrance. Some fragrance oils contain essential oils. Alabu use only pure fair trade essential oils in their products.

Do you test any of your products on animals?
Absolutely not! No animal testing is performed. Alabu formulates all of their products, and the ingredients they use are all top-quality and natural. They know how to formulate a product to give it the characteristics they are looking for, so they are totally comfortable with testing the products on their own skin before offering them for sale.

Skin Care Hints

Keeping your skin beautiful doesn't have to be complicated. Here are a few tips to help you keep your skin healthy.

  • Bathing:
A good quality bath can help moisturize your skin, but can dry your skin out if the water is too hot. Hot water will wash away the natural oils present in your skin. To hydrate your skin, your bath should be lukewarm and last between ten and twenty minutes. Also, a good quality moisturizing bath salt will help soften and moisturize your skin.
  • Exfoliating:
Exfoliation is a great way to maintain healthy skin, but you can easily over-do it. Avoid using soaps that are too harsh, and if you're going to use a wash cloth or something similar, you want to make very light circular motions, with a good quality soap on it to help reduce friction. If you have very sensitive skin you should probably skip the washcloth all together. Use a mild exfoliating soap like our Oat & Honey as it will be much less irritationg.
  • Moisturizing:
Many people find that the climate they live in combined with the natural moisturizing oils thier skin makes is enough to stay properly moisturized. For others, staying moisturized can be pretty time consuming, especially if you live in a dry climate, but it's an important part of keeping your skin healthy. Look for a moizturizer that offers some protective qualities (like a body butter) for your body, and a lighter moisturizer for your face. It's also a good idea to apply a moisturizer within five or ten minutes of getting out of the shower.

Tips for your daily routine:

There are many products on the market today that promise younger looking skin. Many are quite expensive, some have unpleasant side effects and very few offer noticeable results. We all feel better when we look good. The natural way to do this is to start with good nutrition and hydration. After that daily skin care can make you look and feel great.

  • Washing morning and night with a gentle cleanser is a must. We like the Baby Me or Oat & Honey if you have dry or sensitive skin.\
  • Any of our soaps will clean your skin without stripping its natural oils.
  • When you wash, try gently using a circular upward motion on your face and neck.
  • After cleansing, and thoroughly rinsing apply a moisturizer to your face and neck. We like our Replenish Facial Moisturizer because it's so light and absorbs quickly into your skin.
  • Drink water. Most people don't drink the recommended eight glasses a day. It will help keep away wrinkles from your skin and you'll feel better in general when you're hydrated.
  • On occasion you may feel like some extra pampering. Here are some ideas for giving your skin spa-like care in the comfort of your own home.

Exfoliation is the removal of the oldest dead skin cells that cling to the skin's outermost surface. Your skin is constantly making new skin cells at the dermis (lower layer of skin) and pushing them to the epidermis (surface of skin). As this cycle continues, the older skin cells slowly die and fill with keratin. This keratin is what protects our skin from the elements. However, as we age the cycle slows down causing skin cells to compile unevenly on the surface of the skin. This is what can cause a dull, rough, and dry look to the skins complexion. This is where exfoliation can be especially beneficial.

Exfoliation is an important part of both facials and body treatments. When done correctly, exfoliation leaves the skin feeling smoother and fresher looking. Exfoliation also makes absorption easier for your moisturizer.

Be sure to never over-exfoliate, meaning once a week or every three to five days is sufficient. Keep in mind to use the circular motion as described earlier. Be gentle. Using abrasive objects or substances is unnecessary. Remember, you're only removing dead skin cells so it shouldn't take a lot of pressure or scrubbing.

Some people have a lengthy and specific skin care routine that they like to follow, while others may not have the time to be so in depth. Keeping your skin care routine simple doesn't mean you can't have beautiful skin too. Using a gentle bar of Alabu soap along with a light moisturizer, like Replenish Facial Moisturizer can be the extent of your face care routine if you're looking to keep it simple. Alabu soap is effective when it comes to removing dirt, but amazingly gentle because it contains moisturizing oils as well as naturally occurring glycerin.

If you choose to use a moisturizer around your eyes, be sure to apply it with your pinky or ring finger. Since these are your weakest fingers it allows you to apply it gently with care to the sensitive areas around your eyes.

Use of a mask either weekly or bi-weekly can help to renew your pores. Keep in mind that cleansing is important before applying a mask. When removing a mask, be gentle and use warm water. Always apply a moisturizer after using a mask. We have some mask you can make yourself on our recipes page.

Keep in mind that protecting your skin from the sun can go a long way to reduce the age your skin looks. Protecting your skin from the sun when you go outdoors can be a big factor when it comes to healthy your skin. Though some people don't like to hear this, tanning is often associated with premature signs of aging in the skin.

Good skin care involves a variety of tasks, including eating healthy and drinking plenty of water. While skin care on the outside with the use of exfoliants and moisturizers seems like the logical obvious way to create healthy looking skin, we can't forget that what we put on the inside makes a difference too.

About Alabu
How it all started: The story of Alabu Natural Skin Care.

On a sunny winter day in 1997, a friend recruited Alabu Founder Maryclaire Mayes' help for a soap making project. Her friend thought it would be a good chemistry lesson for Maryclaire' home-schooled children. So, they crowded into her kitchen (equipped with goggles and gloves), and learned how alkali combines with oils to make soap.

Her friend had to convince Maryclaire to try the soap. At first, she was a little afraid to try it because the old fashioned soaps she knew growing up were very harsh (they made their own lye from wood ashes). Thankfully handcrafted soaps have really progressed.

Maryclaire never realized how drying commercial "soaps" were until she tried Alabu's handmade goat milk soap (She has learned most commercial "soaps" are actually detergents). She was finally able to get out of the shower without feeling dry and itchy or like her skin shrank. She was hooked on making her own all-natural soap. She started researching, reading, and learning all she could about making the best soap, and the more she learned, the more she was sure she never wanted to use commercial "soaps" again. She started to read the ingredients on commercial soap labels-yikes!!!

At first Maryclaire started making Alabu for her family and friends and giving it away as gifts. Eventually her husband, Dean, convinced her that they should go into business and sell the soap. That's how Alabu was born. Since then, Alabu has continued to grow. They have now expanded from just soap to a line of all natural skin care products. Maryclaire's son, Hal handles most of the day to day operations, and Dean and Maryclaire have taken more of a supporting role. Natural continues to be at the forefront of all that Alabu does. Their products have the ability to change the way you think about all-natural skin care, and as someone that cares a lot about skin health, Maryclaire Mayes can assure you that you'll love Alabu products.
