GU provides athletes with a shot of 100 calories in the form of a patented carbohydrate blend (70-80% maltodextrin and 30-20% fructose) to deliver high-quality, easily-digested and long-lasting energy for athletes in every sport and at all levels. GU also includes electrolytes to ensure proper hydration, an antioxidant blend to stave off muscle tissue damage and an amino acid blend to delay muscle fatigue. Everything inside each packet of GU is engineered to do one simple thing: provide your body with the essential requirements it needs to keep going for miles and miles and hours and hours. It goes down easy, and it goes to work fast so you don’t have to slow down.
Frequently Asked Questions
There are only 100 calories per packet, yet I burn through 100 calories in 10 minutes. Shouldn’t I eat more than one every 30-45 minutes?
We limited GU to 100 calories because, in general, the body can digest roughly 350 calories per hour during exercise. If you tried to eat more, the body would divert blood from your muscles— say “buh-bye” to a personal record—to handle the excess food. If your metabolism is slow, then one GU every 45 minutes works fine. If you have an athlete’s metabolism, try ingesting one GU every 30 minutes and see if it agrees with you.
How do you eat GU?
Rip open the top and squeeze the entire packet into your mouth—don’t save half of it for later. GU’s recipe of carbohydrates and amino acids was created to be taken in one shot to provide you with maximum benefits.
How should you use GU to help you recover from hard training or racing?
When you stop, go ahead and eat a pack of GU, even if it’s been less than 30 minutes from your last GU shot. Now that you’ve stopped exercising, your stomach can handle those calories and needs them to start restoring your muscle glycogen—essentially the body’s instant fuel reservoirs.
Can I use GU for a strength workout or even yoga?
Sure. While GU was designed for endurance sports, it can be used anytime you need energy to fuel a workout. It can also serve as a 100-calorie pick-me-up if you’re dragging or simply need a snack to carry you through until your next meal.
How does the caffeine in GU help me?
GU energy gel comes in both caffeinated and non-caffeinated flavors. Strawberry Banana and Lemon Lime do not have any caffeine in them. Orange, Vanilla, Chocolate, Triberry and Plain all have 20mg of caffeine per packet. GU’s Espresso Love flavor has 40mg of caffeine. Caffeine consumption during exercise improves performance in several ways: it sharpens focus and perks you up; but more importantly, it helps the body produce more power, reduce the pain of hard efforts, and may even tap fat for fuel during exercise. All of this prolongs your ability to exercise at a high intensity. We use just enough caffeine to jump start this benefit and no more.
Does GU freeze?
Yes, but well below zero. It does thicken in cold weather, so keep GU close to your body to keep it warm.
How long does GU take to work?
The fructose converts quickly into an energy molecule that your muscles can tap within minutes. The maltodextrin, which makes up 70-80% of the carbohydrate blend (depending on flavor), takes several minutes longer. Because of this delay, your muscles enjoy a steady stream of energy instead of one gigantic sugar rush and a corresponding crash.
Is GU safe for children?
Yes, if they’re playing sports, on a hike or just being active, GU will help kids just as much as it helps you. You’d probably want to keep them away from the flavors that contain caffeine; no need to make them more hyperactive.
Can my dog eat GU?
We don’t recommend it. Maltodextrin is corn-based and corn is not recommended for dogs—many are actually allergic to corn.
Is GU Energy Gel Kosher?
GU Energy Gel, Roctane, GU Electrolyte Brew, and GU Recovery Brew are all certified Kosher. Chomps are not.
The GU Story
From 1991 until today, athletes the world over have come to the same conclusion: GU works. Their Berkeley-based sports nutrition company started with their original GU Energy Gel, a revolutionary and more effective method to keep athletes fueled during exercise. Since then, GU has continued to improve the recipe, incorporating the latest scientific research into its products. In 2001, GU Electrolyte Brew (formerly Gu2o) was launched as the perfect hydration companion to GU Energy Gel. 2008 saw the introduction of Roctane Ultra Endurance Energy Gel, followed by Chomps Energy Chews and GU Recovery Brew in 2009. Every product is formulated to further GU's mission: to help athletes go faster and longer than ever before.
The Gu Factory
Athletes everywhere appreciate the taste, convenience and performance enhancing benefits of GU Energy Gel and Roctane Ultra Endurance Energy Gel. But few give much thought to how or where these gels are produced and packaged. You might be interested to learn a bit about the GU factory and the exceptional care that goes into every packet they create.
As they mix each batch of GU, the formula for every flavor is double checked against the super-secret master recipe. Their Director of R&D sources only the highest quality ingredients and happily rejects raw materials if they are off spec. He also oversees the production process from soup to nuts, ensuring precision in the mixing process. Texture, taste, pH? all good? He's also the in-house go-to guy for their never ending sports nutrition questions - they make sure he puts his degree to good use!
When all ingredients have been accurately measured, the batches are carefully blended only at the proper speed and temperature to ensure repeatable high quality and consistency. The production team is comprised of several long-time employees; collectively they boast more than 50 years experience. Together their team has produced tens of millions of packets of GU! Talk about athletic kilowatts. As the gatekeepers of day-to-day manufacturing, anything short of perfection just won't pass muster.
GU quality control continues when the gel is ready for packaging. Customized machinery, used solely for GU and Roctane Energy Gels, fills each packet with a precise amount of gel - Laverne & Shirley meet the modern age! There's nothing quite like a stroll through the manufacturing building when Chocolate Outrage is running, the intoxicating aroma of pure Belgian chocolate wafting through the air. Time it just right and you can sample a warm packet fresh off the line, a decadent and lip smacking treat. It'll send you running for some vanilla ice cream to complement the Outrageousness. I digress…. Then, the boxes are folded, glued and packed by their fully automated line. Every box is certain to have the proper number of packets as each is weighed before being sealed and packed for its final destination, your gear bag and ultimately, your mouth.
GU's state-of-the-art production line and exacting quality control process are valuable assets, but what do they mean to you, the athlete? You can trust that the premium gel you rely on undergoes the most rigorous quality checks in the sports nutrition industry. They watch over every batch of gel they produce and maintain a production facility that is free from the risk of contamination by foreign substances. Most other gel manufacturers outsource production to third party contract manufacturers where who-knows-what was produced in the previous batch. This can be a serious concern in a supplement business that is lightly regulated and too often not completely above board.
GU makes sure you can focus on training and reaching your goals in upcoming races. Breathe easy and leave your gels in the hands of the energy food experts at GU. Just suck down a packet of your favorite flavor and go (big)!
Both GU Energy Gel and our new Roctane Ultra Endurance Energy Gel pack 100 calories into every packet. 100 calories is an ideal serving size to suck down 15 minutes before training or racing in order to top off your electrolyte and glucose stores, followed by one every 30-45 minutes along the way, washed down with a few sips of fluid. For optimum results, always drink at least 24-30 ounces of fluid per hour during training and racing. Exact GU intake depends on the intensity of your pursuit and your body weight and fitness level. The fitter you are and the more efficient your metabolism, the more GU you can eat each hour, up to approximately 340 calories every 60 minutes. Combine GU with Roctane Ultra Endurance Gel, GU Electrolyte Brew and GU Recovery Brew for the ultimate in sports hydration, fueling and recovery. Take one gel 15 minutes before training or competition and then one gel every 30-45 minutes during exercise. Drink Electrolyte Brew throughout your training or racing, and drink Recovery Brew within 30 minutes after you’ve stopped.
About GU Energy
GU Sports (sports street marketing) was founded in Berkeley, Ca, in the early 90's by Dr. William Vaughan. The mission from day one, which is still true today, is to provide athletes the best exercise specific nutrition products available. Period! After formulating the world's first energy bar, Dr. Vaughan was disappointed in that the bar, due to its high level of fat, fiber and protein, did not work for athletes while they were training and racing. His own daughter, Laura, a very accomplished ultra-marathoner, continued to have severe stomach problems when consuming bars during races. "how can we call it an energy bar for athletes when all it does is shut down the system for 45 minutes or so while the body digests all those useless-to-athletes ingredients?" asked a frustrated Dr. Vaughan.
