    Frontier Natural Products Arrowroot Powder contains 100% pure starch obtained from the roots of the arrowroot plant. It does not contain gluten and is considered a "safe food" by Celiac research and support groups. It is also referred to as arrowroot flour in many recipes. Arrowroot is an excellent base for cream sauces, and clear glazes, and it doesn't lose its thickening ability in the presence of acid, like flour does. This quality makes it an excellent choice for thickening acidic fruits.

    Tapioca and other starches are sometimes mislabeled as arrowroot. Frontier microscopically checks the structure of the starch cells of their arrowroot to insure it has not been adulterated with other starches. Arrowroot starch is made by washing the harvested roots, grinding them into a pulp, and mixing the pulp with water. The resulting mixture is strained (to remove the fibrous material), allowed to settle, and air dried. It is then ground into a fine powder.

    Its use has been traced as far back as the 1600s. The Arawak, a people native to the Caribbean Islands, considered arrowroot a dietary staple. They called it "aru-aru," meaning "meal of meals." The Arawak also valued the plant for its healing properties. They used the tubers to draw poison from wounds inflicted by poisonous arrows. Early European settlers of the New World observed this practice, named the plant "arrow-root," and brought it back to Europe where it eventually became popular. Tapioca and other starches are sometimes mislabeled as arrowroot. Frontier microscopically checks the structure of the starch cells of their arrowroot to insure it has not been adulterated with other starches.

    Arrowroot and tapioca starch are very similar in source, manufacture and paste characteristics. As a result they are often confused. In fact, much of the commercial "arrowroot" available is actually a variety of tapioca. This misnaming is a disservice to the consumer for two reasons. First, true arrowroot requires more processing than tapioca starch and is therefore more expensive. Second, arrowroot and tapioca come from different plants. (Tapioca comes from the root of the cassava plant, Manihot utilissima or Manihot esculenta.) According to the FDA's Compliance Policy Guides (CPG) the term "arrowroot" may only be used to designate starch obtained from the roots of the Maranta arundinacea. The CPG specifies that other starches should be designated by some non-misleading term that indicates their source, for example "tapioca starch." (The exception to this is corn starch, which may simply be labeled "starch.")

    Because of the common confusion in terms, when manufacturers import "arrowroot," the burden of verification falls to them. Verification can be made through microscopic evaluation and familiarity with the characteristic shape and appearance of arrowroot and other starch grains. (In general, arrowroot starch granules are larger than tapioca starch granules.) The extent of mislabeling indicates that some manufacturers lack the desire or the expertise to properly identify their products.

    History
    Frontier began as a two-person operation in 1976 in a cabin along the Cedar River in Eastern Iowa. They have grown steadily for over a quarter of a century to become a major supplier in the booming natural products industry. This outstanding performance throughout the years reflects their close harmony with both industry trends and the values of natural products consumers.

    Frontier has demonstrated an aptitude for associating itself with trends that fuel success. The business was originally structured as a cooperative that supplied herbs and spices to its members, all of whom were cooperatives engaged in retailing natural foods or cooperative buying clubs. Being a co-op itself helped propel Frontier into national distribution in rapidly expanding natural foods "co-op movement."

    Frontier also embraced many of the positive ideals underlying the popularity of co-ops. The early management envisioned a workplace where employees would enjoy their work, families would come first, the quality of products would be unsurpassed, organics would play a key role in the business and social responsibility would be inseparable from their actions. These values have been sustained-and have contributed significantly to Frontier's success-throughout its entire history.

    Initially Frontier acted as a wholesaler, repackaging several hundred varieties of herbs and spices into smaller one- and two-pound bags. Customers then resold these products in bulk to their retail customers, typically at a substantial discount to equivalent consumer-packaged products available in traditional supermarkets. In an effort to meet as many customer requests as possible, Frontier expanded its selection to include many uncommon herbs and spices, building both its supplier contacts and its reputation as a comprehensive source of botanical products.

    In 1978 Frontier bought and converted a grocery store building in Fairfax, Iowa, into a 5,200 square foot operations facility.

    Subsequent growth resulted in Frontier purchasing a ten-acre parcel of Iowa farmland in 1982 near Norway, Iowa, and constructing a 21,000 square foot facility. Plant expansions in 1984, 1988 and 1993 have increased the facility size to over 85,000 square feet. Frontier now owns an additional 50 acres of land adjacent to the main facility, 22 acres of which is maintained as tallgrass prairie.

    During 1988 Frontier introduced a line of packaged spices. This was followed in 1991 with the introduction of a line of gourmet, 100% certified organic whole bean coffees. Subsequent introductions included a line of herbal extracts and the first certified organic beer in the United States.

    Not all of these product lines were sustained successes, but all provided greater name recognition and expanded opportunities. The Frontier brand packaged-spice line developed into a significant sales contributor and laid important groundwork for the later establishment of the Simply Organic brand. Another Frontier brand, Frontier Coffee, was a part of the company for ten years. In addition to providing consumers with the highest quality organic coffee, Frontier Coffee funded a wide range of social programs in the poor coffee growing communities. Business loans, a power plant to produce electricity, computer equipment for schools, and a bridge were among the projects. In June of 2001, the coffee business was sold to Green Mountain Coffee.

    Are you buying 100% pure lavender essential oil? Be sure to check the label. Some manufacturers substitute lavandin. Lavandin is a hybrid between two plants: lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and spike (Lavandula latifolia). Lavandin yields more oil and is easier to grow than true lavender, making it cheaper and more widely available.

    Lavender, lavandin and spike all have their own individual therapeutic and aromatic value and are not interchangeable with each other. The properties of each oil needs to be taken into account whether they be used alone or in combination with one another.     Before adding arrowroot to hot liquids, it should be mixed with cool-warm water or your cooking liquid (also cool-warm) to form a paste and gradually added to the recipe. The starch doesn't hold its thickness for long periods of time, so foods should be served immediately; reheating will also cause a loss of thickening.

    • For General use: 1 T. product will thicken 1 c. of liquid.
    • As a replacement for flour: 1 1/2 tsp. product is equal to 1 T. of flour.
    • As a replacement for cornstarch: 2 tsp. of product are equal to 1 T. of cornstarch.
