In Japan, green tea is so widely consumed that it is usually referred to simply as “tea.” The many varieties of tea are determined by how the leaf of the Camellia sinensis plant is grown or how it is processed after being harvested: sometimes the leaf is grown in the shade, sometimes the leaf is pan-roasted after being picked.
