The 3 R's
Calbee started the "Environment Project" in January of 2009. The project's slogan is to "Think Healthy, Act Green." Based on the 3 R's method, Calbee assigned each team member with a specific category. The 3 R's represent 'Reduce', 'Reuse' and 'Recycle'. The first category is "Surplus Product (Reduce and Reuse)." By donating unseasoned product surplus to local farmers, reexamining production operation and by educating employees about product surplus, Calbee is able to reduce their overall waste.
The second category is "Paper (Reduce)." By changing company computers printer settings to 2-side printing, changing workflow to eliminate amount of paper work to print, re-formatting company forms and by educating employees about paper waste, Calbee is able to reduce the amount of paper usage. Category three is "Water (Reduce)." Calbee is currently researching how they can reduce the use of water in their daily production. This project is one of the most difficult; Calbee has to start by reexamining plant cleaning procedures and determine where water misuse is being generated. Calbee hopes to have a solution to reduce water usage by the end of 2010.
The fourth category is "Energy / Electricity (Reduce)." By changing office lighting and temperature control settings, changing production operation procedures and by educating employees about how to save electricity, Calbee is able to reduce their electric usage significantly. The last category is another type of energy, "Gas (Reduce)." With production amounts increasing, it is proving challenging to reduce gas usage since most of the usage is related to Calbee's production. Calbee is continuing research on how they can reduce the use of gas energy and be more efficient in their use.

Helping Local Farmers & Reducing Waste
As Calbee would like to reduce waste as much as possible, with snack production comes food waste. To minimize actual food waste, Calbee provides local farmers in Dixon their unseasoned product waste. Local farmers bring this food waste back to their farms and grind them to smaller pieces and mix them up with the normal diet for their goats and pigs. This reduces Calbee's waste amount significantly. Calbee has started this program in May of 2009 and since then they have donated 1.5 tons of food waste to their farmers every other week. This process creates a win-win situation for the farmers (free food for their livestock) and Calbee (reduce waste amount).
