A Note On Yogavive's Organic Orchards
In the course of producing an awesome apple chip, Yogavive also looks for ways to ensure they benefit their suppliers and the environment. Yogavive's Fuji apples come from both the beautiful south of Chile, and China's mountainous Shanxi Province. As terroir makes a good wine, so are the natural factors at their orchards critical to nature providing a sweet, juicy apple. Grown in rich volcanic soils in Chile, and at 2,300ft elevation in China, their USDA (NOP - National Organic Program) certified orchards allow the apples to grow and ripen robustly from the first spring blossom through till fall harvest.
No chemical/synthetic pesticides or fertilizers means a return to natural methods of protection and nurturing. Yogavive's growers pack soils around the tree trunks to insulate from the cold winters and prepare for spring. To prevent infiltration by pests they use a three-step process…first they slough off old bark where pests accumulate, and remove it entirely from orchard. Next, the base of the tree is caulked with lime and wrapped with sticky paper to ensure no crawling critters can get from the soil to the treetops. Finally, for flying critters they use UV lamps and hang gourds in the treetops filled with a natural sugar water to attract bugs. As the apples ripen they are separately covered in paper bags to protect and prevent drying through the hot summer. Of course…as organic land strengthens year on year it encourages bird life and mammals to return and integrate…nature's own fertilizer and pest control.
Yogavive uses Ecocert, a third party agency, to regularly test their orchards and apples for sulfides, and check to ensure that they are correctly spaced from conventional apple production areas. All soils have undergone at least a 3 year conversion period to guarantee all chemicals and pesticides have leached out. Yogavive believes that soil deterioration could play a huge part in future food security, and that rebalancing with organic methods can help ensure a return to sustainability.
Yogavive's orchards employ minimal mechanization and therefore more local labor, thereby reducing their carbon footprint and strengthening the local economy. When new orchards are planned, they approach the tenant farmers and offer free organic technique education and most importantly above-market prices for their apples. Going organic must be a primarily economic concern, and their involvement with the local level agricultural departments ensures that they actively participate in bolstering the region's ongoing plans to return more land and produce supply to certified organic status.

What is the USDA Organic difference to me?
All of Yogavive's products are USDA NOP certified organic. This means that all of their fruit is grown in a pesticide and chemical free soil environment which means that harmful chemicals do not make their way into the fruit and therefore into your body. Yogavive's products therefore leave a smaller carbon footprint than fresh fruit counterparts.
Why shouldn't I only buy locally grown and processed products?
Buying only local products would vastly limit a consumer's options. Furthermore, there are many examples of imported products that have a smaller carbon footprint than those grown locally. For example, if you wanted to eat local apples year-round then you would have to refrigerate them using energy. Importing apples from different areas during cyclical harvests can actually reduce the total carbon footprint versus storing local produce for year round consumption. Another good example is that industrialized countries employ mechanized farming techniques which rely on fossil fuels. Developing nations often use more labour intensive farming methods, thereby reducing fossil fuel dependency while maintaining local employment. Transport costs from such locations to developed countries often yield a lower carbon footprint than local (mechanized) foodstuffs.
Yogavive's label says "with other natural flavors" - What does this mean exactly?
Yogavive's Apple Chips are made using only natural ingredients. Yogavive's Caramel, Peach and Strawberry varieties are what is called, "WONF" - with other natural flavors. These flavors are derived from wholly natural sources and are not chemically synthesized. For example, these natural flavors are made from fruit juices derived from real peaches and real strawberries, or sugar, for the Caramel variety.
These natural flavors are used only to enhance the product's flavor, and not much different than your favorite fruit juice company mixing water with your fruit juice.
Then why are the Original and Cinnamon Apple Chips labeled as "100% Organic", while the others are labeled simply as "Organic"?
Both Original and Cinnamon Yogavive Apple Chips are NOP certified 100% Organic, as certified by both the USDA and EcoCert. The cinnamon that they use is pure organic cinnamon. Yogavive's Strawberry, Peach and Caramel varieties are also certified Organic with a minimal percentage (5%) of ingredients consisting of the naturally-derived WONF flavors.
While their WONF flavors are naturally derived from real, honest-to-gosh fruit, guidelines view these flavors as non-organically derived natural flavors, since you can't go pick a 'natural flavoring' off a tree (no matter how naturally derived)!
What are these natural flavors made of?
Yogavive's natural flavors contain natural fruit extracts (WONF), water and minimal amounts of necessary food-grade ethyl alcohol, used as a base.
According to their French flavor supplier, "Flavor obtained through a simple mix of natural flavoring substances, and then natural extracts on alcoholic support, in accordance with EEC 88/388."
In simpler terms, their flavors do NOT contain synthesized chemicals, only naturally derived components. Essentially, their Peach variety contains peach extracts and the Strawberry variety has strawberry… and so on.
How does Yogavive make their chips?
Yogavive first lightly bakes their fruit, then adds in their wonderful organic/natural flavors. Next, they take away the air to 'pop' the apples and impart an extremely light and crunchy texture, with all the flavor sealed in. Some brands you'll find are fried in oil, but Yogavive thinks this is a big no no with fruit. Others fully bake, but this can be a little too, well, overdone. Basic drying is great, but results in a very chewy texture. Freeze drying can be crumbly fun, but Yogavive feels that popping gives you a more flavorful and healthful snack.
