Biotics Research HistoPlex-AB - 90 Capsules
Biotics Research HistoPlex-AB supplies a proprietary blend of herbal extracts shown to possess immunomodulating properties. HistoPlex-AB was formulated with the kind assistance or Dr. Gary Lasneski. According to Dr. Lasneski, regular HistoPlex is designed as support for those with food sensitivities (ie. immune responses to foods), though it has some slight crossover with airborne sensitivities. The crossover is due to the effect, or aggravation of other sensitivities, ie. an immune response to a food may aggravate a sensitivity to dog or cat dander.
HistoPlex-AB was designed as support for those having airborne sensitivities such as pollen, dust, mold, etc. HistoPlex-AB acts as a natural leukotriene inhibitor and is very effective for allergic asthma; stuffy nose, watery eyes, etc. On average, it takes about 10 days to have a marked effect with HistoPlex-AB, and its effects peek at about 3 to 4 weeks. HistoPlex and HistoPlex-AB can both be enhanced by taking measures to improve gut etiology. It may be appropriate to incorporated IPS and ADP in some. In others a level of detox or metabolic clearing (ie. NutriClear and Detox packs) may be warranted.
Where you run into sensitivities that are primarily airborne, combined with mild food sensitivities, use HistoPlex-AB at 2-3 caps BID and regular HistoPlex at 2-3 caps once daily. If the problem is mostly foods and the airborne sensitivities aggravate it, use regular HistoPlex at 2-3 caps BID and HistoPlex-AB at 2-3 caps once daily.
HistoPlex-AB works very well in combination with other products, like KappArest for example. The combination can help address inflamed mucosa linings. In terms a Chinese Medicine, think of KappArest as cooling and reducing redness and heat (as with inflammation), where as HistoPlex-AB is mostly cooling and draining, relating to histamine and allergic reactions.
As is the case with any and all botanical based products, the possibility for sensitivity is always present, as is the possibility of having some slight GI upset effecting a very small subset of people. Where this is a concern, a clinician can ramp up the dosage, starting with 1 cap daily for a couple of days, then increasing to 1 cap BID, then again increasing to 2 caps BID, and if need be increasing to 3 caps BID. There are instances that are probably not suited to supplementation with HistoPlex-AB. Anyone with a significantly compromised immune system (AIDS, transplant patients, chemo patients, lupus, etc.) or somebody with an acute infection, because we don’t want to inhibit an immune response in these people. For them, regular HistoPlex would still be OK. And while there is nothing published to indicate it would be problematic, HistoPlex-AB should probably not be recommended for children under 12 years of age. And of course it is not recommended for pregnant or lactating women.
Fritillaria thunbergii (Fritillaria) is an antitussive herb and is a potent cough suppressant. It has a broncho-dilation effect and inhibits mucosal secretions. Fritillaria’s traditional use is for relief of coughing and dyspnea (The Pharmacology of Chinese Herbs, pg 275-6). Its active principals are the group of alkaloids found in the bulbs, and its diterpene content may contribute to its anti-tussive effects. It has bitter, cold properties that clear heat and transforms phlegm-heat (Chinese Herbal Medicine Materia Medica, pg 177-8) and dissipates nodules. Fritillaria tends to act in a manner that is similar to dexamethasone, which is used to teat nasal allergy and inflammation.
Solidago virgaurea (European Goldenrod) supplies flavonoids, saponins and phenol glycosides. The German Commission E Monographs recommend it “as irrigation therapy for inflammatory diseases of the lower urinary tract,” but also notes its action as a mild antispasmodic. Its medicinal uses, besides bladder and urinary tract inflammation, include allergies and associated symptoms. S. virgaurea is primarily used to promote the loss of water (aquaretic agent) from the body, as opposed to a diuretic, which causes the loss of electrolytes as well (Univ. of MD Med.Center website).
Scutellaria baicalensis (Baikal Scullcap) possesses anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and anti-allergic properties, via its active principals. They include biacalein, baicalin and wogonin (flavonoid glycosides), Beta-sistosterol, and even benzoic acid.. S. baicalensis has been used for upper respiratory infections (The Pharmacology of Chinese Herbs, pg 385-6), and has been shown to inhibit histamine (Pub Med, Kyo, 1998). It also has some fungistatic properties (Pub Med, Yang, 1995) which may result in part from its benzoic acid content. Anti-allergic actions may relate to its ability to inhibit the release of enzymes from mast cells, probably by inhibiting receptors. Animal studies have shown a bronchodilator effect on guinea pigs with allergic asthma (Chinese Herbal Medicine Materia Medica, pg 75-6).
Euphrasia officinalis (Eyebright) – The German Commission E Monographs lists uses of Eyebright which include inflamed eyes, coughs, colds and catarrh (inflammation of mucous membrane). It is useful if an allergic response it the basis for sinusitis (Clinical Botanical Medicine, pg 209). E. officinalis contains Iridiode monoterpenes, lignans, flavonoids and tannins, some alkaloids, glycosides, sterols and volatile oils. E. officinalis is often used for allergic conditions affecting the eyes, middle ear, sinuses and nasal passages. The astringent qualities of this herb protect the mucous membranes of the eyes, thereby reducing the inflammation seen in allergic reactions that occur with hay fever or air pollution.
Morus alba (White Mulberry) In Chinese Medicine, M. alba is used to tonify the blood and enrich the yin (Chinese Herbal Medicines Materia Medica, pg 334-5). It is used as a tonic and as an expectorant for asthma, bronchitis, cold and cough and dyspepsia. M.alba’s properties are sweet and cold. Morus alba supplies polyhenolic compounds such a morin, mulbulberrin and maclurin, to name a few. The fruit also contains a significant amount of resveratrol. Interestingly, the leaves happen to be the primary food source of the silkworm.
Platycodon grandiflorum (Chinese bellflower) The active principals are triterpenoids, sterols and saponins, principaly platycodin. Platycodin exerts and expectorant action by increasing bronchial secretions (The Pharmacology of Chinese Herbs, pg 285-6). Traditional uses are to dispel phlegm, to ventilate the lungs, and to relieve sore throat. In traditional Chinese Medicine, Platycodon is often used in combination in order to direct the actions of other herbs to the upper body.
Albizia julibrissin (Silk Tree) has sweet, neutral properties and contains saponins and tannins. It is calming, ie it “calms the spirit” (Chinese Herbal Medicine Materia Medica, pg 406-7) Considered an “auspicious tree,” it is used as a tonic and anthelmintic or vermifuge (Li Shih-Chen, Chinese Medicinal Herbs, pg 22-3).
Why you may need HistoPlex-AB: From mid-spring and the onset of tree pollens, to late spring’s onset of weed pollens, followed by summer’s superfluous grass pollens, and a nearly year round onslaught of fungi and mould spores – allergic triggers are ubiquitous. Seasonal changes tend to exacerbate this and hallmark the bane of many people’s existence; airborne allergies. An estimated 40-50 million Americans suffer from airborne allergies, which tend to provoke responses such as respiratory symptoms, sinus congestion, nasal drainage, post-nasal drip, coughing, red, watery, runny eyes, and dark undereye circles.
Why your healthcare practitioner recommends HistoPlex-AB from Biotics Research: People experiencing seasonal or airborne irritants rarely develop symptoms spontaneously. For most, they have been suffering a little more or a little longer with each passing year. They typically have tried everything and anything. For them, HistoPlex-AB is an innovative supplement that supports the body’s ability to respond to airborne irritants and is available exclusively through Biotics Research. The unique proprietary blend of standardized herbal extracts found in HistoPlex-AB shares the distinction of having immunomodulating effects. Fritillaria thunbergii is known to have antitussive, astringent, and expectorant functions. It is a source of fritimine, which diminishes the excitability of respiratory centers. Solidago virgaurea, commonly known as European Goldenrod, and Scutellaria baicalensis both function to counteract proinflammatory mediators which may be “triggered” as the body responds to airborne irritation. As its common name indicates, Euphrasia officinalis (Eyebright) has long been used to make ‘eyes bright’. Improvements on eye pressure, itchiness, light sensitivity, swelling, and eye drainage have all been noted with use. Morus alba is a source of quercetin 3(6-malonylglucoside) (Q3MG), a flavonol glycoside which has known antioxidative and antiatherogenic protective effects. Saponins derived from the root of Platycodon grandiflorum have been studied for their multifarious properties including inhibiting Cox-2, TNF-a, and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) levels. It has also been used to support the expectoration of phlegm and the alleviation of throat irritation. Albizia julibrissin is a species of legume which has known antioxidant properties.

Quality Control - What Sets Biotics Apart
The Biotics Research way!
At Biotics Research Corporation, we manufacture our own branded products on site, in our own state
of the art facilities, allowing for complete control of the entire manufacturing process. In our on-site
laboratories, the highly skilled members of our Quality Control Unit, utilize modern, sophisticated technologies
and validated analytical methods to test incoming raw materials, monitor manufacturing processes, perform in-
process testing, and test all finished products prior to their release for shipment. In fact, many aspects of our
cGMPs (current Good Manufacturing Practices) exceed the new, recently enacted FDA guidelines for dietary
supplements in order to ensure the safety and effectiveness of our products.
The Quality Control Unit (QCU) has the authority to approve and/or reject all specifications and procedures
associated with the production and release of all raw materials, packaging materials and finished products,
including test methods and results, instrument calibrations, and processing records. The QCU conducts all internal
audits, and validates and audits all raw material and packaging suppliers and service vendors as well.
All incoming raw materials are subject to appropriate testing prior to their release for production. Tests
conducted include identity, potency, biological activity, microbiological, including bacteria, yeast and mold
(including aflatoxins) and heavy metals (arsenic, cadmium, lead & mercury). Retained samples are maintained of
all raw materials and finished products for future testing requirements (raw material stability and finished
product expiration date verification).
All bulk finished products (tablets & capsules) are inspected and subjected to metal detection
prior to being sampled by QC. They are then subject to appropriate disintegration and/or dissolution testing, and
potency testing prior to being released to packaging. All liquid and powder products are tested for potency prior
to packaging as well. Finally, microbiological testing is performed on all finished products and document
reconciliation is completed prior to being released for shipment.
All testing is performed by our trained QC personnel using state of the art laboratory instrumentation including
High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), ICP, Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AA), gel electrophoresis, FT
