Solid Gold Berry Balance For Cats And Dogs 3.5 oz. (100 g)

Solid Gold Berry Balance is a nutritional supplement for cats and dogs that helps balance urinary tract pH to dissolve struvite crystals that can develop in urine if it is too alkaline. Berry Balance is ideal for a pet who's prone to struvite crystals and bladder infections. Solid Gold Berry Balance contains natural cranberry and blueberry extract, marshmallow and vitamin C to support the healthy functioning of the urinary tract. Cranberries and blueberries contain a substance called hippuric acid, which has been shown in recent studies to have antibacterial activity. This helps prevent bacteria such as E-coli from adhering to the bladder wall. Solid Gold supplements are the perfect way to add that additional nutrition in your pet's diet. All Solid Gold Supplements are tested and ensured to provide the optimal nutrition for your pet.

What is the shelf life of Solid Gold Dry Food?
Solid Gold dry foods have a shelf life of one year. The bags are dated with a best before date which is exactly one year from the day of manufacture. Solid Gold recommends using the food within 3 months after opening.

I have been feeding Solid Gold for years, but the last bag that I opened looked darker (or lighter) than before. Should I be concerned about feeding this to my pet?
Since Solid Gold does not add artificial colors or flavors to the food, they expect to see slight variation from batch to batch. This is simply a reflection of the natural ingredients they use, and in no way affects the quality of the food.

Are the fish used in your foods farmed or wild caught?
Solid Gold only uses wild caught fish - their fish are never from fish farms.

I have a small breed puppy, but I do not see a small breed puppy food. What should I feed him/her?
Small Gold recommends feeding small breed puppies the Just A WEE BIT formula. It is specifically formulated for smaller breeds, which have a higher calorie requirement per pound of body weight than larger dogs and the nutrient profile closely matches that of the Hundchen Flocken puppy formula. This, it is suitable for puppies and adults alike.

My dog likes to eat the cat stool out of the litter box. Can I give the SEP to my cat to prevent this?
You cannot give SEP to cats as they cannot handle the excess glutamic acid, which is the bittering agent in this product. Because of their diet, cats produce a very palatable stool, as they are often eating a higher protein food than dogs are and some of this passes undigested in the stool. Unfortunately, Solid Gold is unaware of any product which can be given to the cats to prevent this issue. The best recommendation they have is a covered litter box, or one that allows for top entry, and is this inaccessible to dogs.

What is the best way to store Solid Gold pet food once it is opened?
Solid Gold generally recommends placing the entire bag into an airtight container, without pouring it out. The container should be stored in a cool, dry place. Pouring the food out exposes it to a rush of air and can increase the rate at which it will oxidize, decreasing the shelf-life. By leaving the food in the bag and then placing the bag into an airtight container, the bag becomes a barrier which then provides an extra layer of protection. Also, this allows tracking of any issues or problems which may arise as the bag is being used, because there is a batch number and expiration date which identifies that particular production run. The canned foods should be covered and stored in the refrigerator for no longer than 3-5 days.

I recently purchased a bag of Solid Gold that wasn't vacuum sealed, is it still ok to feed it?
Solid Gold dry food bags contain a revolutionary one-way valve system to hermetically seal the bags. Hermetic sealing gives the same effect as vacuum packaging, in that the bag is completely air tight and impervious to external influence. Solid Gold bags are not vacuum packed.

Some bags are very rigid, where the air has been completely expelled through the one-way valve. This effect occurs in bags that were stored in the lower part of a pallet or passed through high altitude on their way to their final destination. Other bags, which are not as rigid, still have the airtight seal and protection from the outside environment and are preferred by some customers and stores as they are easier to stack and life. Through extensive shelf life testing, they have found there is absolutely no shelf life difference between the bags that are rock hard and those that are loose.

I don't see glucosamine or chondroitin in your large breed or senior formula, why is this?
Solid Gold does not have glucosamine and chondroitin added to their products for many reasons. The main one is that there are over and under dosing concerns when added to the food because of the difference in sizes of the dog eating it. It is much more exact to supplement each dog individually, that way small dogs don't get too much and large dogs get enough. Dosing concerns aside, to add the supplement to the food in a large enough quantity to be effective would be cost prohibitive, it is much more economical to supplement after the food is manufactured. The amount that is in the other foods would require between 15 and 20 cups be consumed per day to get the recommended daily amount without additional supplementation. Further, this is currently an unapproved feed additive according to AAFCO. Were they to put it in Solid Gold foods, they would face possible stop sale of their products until it is removed. For these reasons, they have separate joint supplements.

Does Solid Gold engage in any animal testing?
The only testing Solid Gold conducts on animals is in the form of non-invasive feeding trials. The dogs and cats are fed a variety of food and their preferences are simply monitored and recorded. Feeding trials are the best method of ensure that this food is palatable for dogs and cats and is very necessary to ensure the best product makes it to the market. All dog food companies must assess the nutritional quality and palatability of their food before it can receive approval to be sold. This is currently done with personal pets owned by the employees and associates of Solid Gold.

Where are Solid Gold foods made?
All Solid Gold products, with the exception of the Blended Tuna canned cat food, are made in the USA.

What is the shelf life of Solid Gold treats?
Solid Gold's meat based treats are stamped with an expiration date. Their biscuits are stamped with a manufacture date and are good for a year from this date.

What is the shelf life of Solid Gold Supplements?
Most supplements are stamped with an expiration date. However, there are a few supplements that are stamped with a four-digit manufacture date. The first three numbers are the day of the year and the last number is the year. The powdered supplements with a manufactured date have a shelf life of three years.

Do Solid Gold foods need to be supplemented?
All Solid Gold foods are complete and balanced according to AAFCO guidelines. Therefore, they do not need to be supplemented with anything. However, Solid Gold does recommend supplementing any commercial pet food with a supplement like Solid Gold Seameal. Seameal contains 60 trace minerals, 12 vitamins, 22 amino acids, digestive enzymes and flaxseed meal.

About Solid Gold
Solid Gold Health Products For Pets, Inc., has been a pioneer of natural, holistic animal nutrition since 1974. They now have a line of nine dry dog and cat foods, including their new high protein, low carbohydrate dog food, Barking at the Moon. They also have a line of canned dog and cat foods as well as nutritional supplements, treats, and topical products.

All Solid Gold dry and canned dog and cat foods are wheat, corn and soy free. They use healthy oils packed with omega fatty acids such as canola oil and salmon oil. Over the years they have updated their formulas as new nutritional research has become available. For instance, a few years ago, they added taurine to all their dry dog foods to help protect against dilated cardiomyopathy.

Solid Gold is also an industry leader in the use of revolutionary foil "barrier" packaging for all of their dry food products, which means they don't have to use chemical preservatives or flavor enhancers. Barrier packaging keeps food fresher longer, maintains palatability, and helps to sustain the potency of valuable vitamins and other nutrients, which may deplete over time with conventional paper bags.

Solid Gold's Philosophy
The concept behind holistic health care is that the body should be viewed as a whole structure and not regarded as just a collection of individual parts. All systems within an organism are connected with one another in some way, and any imbalance may disrupt other body systems before physical signs are seen.

All aspects of a disorder should be considered in the planning and implementation of a treatment regime, as opposed to treating only the apparent clinical signs themselves. For example, a dog that suffers from chronic skin irritation, ear infections, or chews incessantly at his feet, should not just be treated with steroids, antibiotics or topical applications. The cause should be determined and addressed. Foot-chewing and chronic ear infections are classing signs of food allergies in dogs. Often, a simple changed in diet combined with support for the immune system will rectify the problem within days.

Viewing the body as an inseparable structure, and treating the cause of disease (as opposed to "splitting" the body into its individual parts and trying to treat only the visible signs), allows that body which is fundamentally sound, to return itself to normal. Solid Gold selects ingredients from around the world, to produce foods and supplements, which can be used in conjunction with each other. This promotes a healthful whole body, whose systems work in harmony and are enhanced to their maximum potential.

Solid Gold's History
The founder and owner of Solid Gold Health Products For Pets is Sissy Harrington-McGill. Sissy went to Germany in 1974 to buy the fawn son of the 1974 world Champion Great Dane and the brindle nephew of the 1973 World Champion Great Dane. She has raised Danes since 1958.

While in Germany, she found that German Danes were very healthy and lived to be 11 to 13 years old. The American Danes lived to be only 7 to 9 years old. Sissy believed this difference may have been nutrition related and gathered samples of some German dog foods. Upon returning to the United States, she had the various foods analyzed to determine how they might lengthen the life span of the American Danes. She then developed the Solid Gold Hund-n-Flocken (which means "dog food flakes" in German).

This began Solid Gold Health Products For Pets, Inc., The Holistic Animal Nutrition Center. Sissy has a Master's Degree from Columbia University in New York City. She began a doctoral program at the University of California, Berkeley, and complete her coursework at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Solid Gold was chosen as the United States Chamber of Commerce Small Business Association, California Exporter of the Year.

I have been using this for about 4 years on my one cat who is prone to struvite crystals. Used with canned food with extra water added is best for my cat. Works great. 1/8 teaspoon 3 times a week. She is mostly on a wet food diet. The more water I can get into her the better since I rarely see her drink any water.

This is one of the most referred UTI products on the market for cats and dogs. So far we've had no repeat UTIs, but I haven't used it very much. I give my large male cat just a pinch in his soft food once a day, for three days a week. He eats his food and doesn't seem to mind it. It's one of the purest UTI products on the market, and is a little pricey, but worth it.
