    History of Ear Candle
    • King Tut and his Egyptian contemporaries had the right idea when they practiced ear candling thousands of years ago – as did the people of China, Tibet and other ancient cultures.
    • The ancients candled primarily for spiritual reasons. They used glazed pottery cones to direct a flow of smoke from burning herbs into the ear canal. This was thought to aid meditation and enhance sensitivity, thereby improving a person’s spiritual condition.
    • The same was true in the New World, where the Aztecs, Incas and Mayans all used ear cones in their religious rituals. Native Americans used ear candling for therapeutic as well as spiritual reasons. Even today, ear candling is thought by some to have profound metaphysical implications. Over the centuries, ear candles have taken many forms, including hollowed-out sticks, and rolled up newspapers coated with wax. Some societies use a variation of candling, whereby herbed smoke is simply blown into the ears. Most ear candles sold today are produced in modern facilities, under controlled hygienic conditions, with medically safe components.
    • Eventually people began to recognize the value of ear candling in the treatment of common ear ailments, and the practice spread to virtually every country in the modern world, including the United States. Today, many people are returning to a more natural way of life. They’re rejecting overly processed, chemical-laden foods in favor of healthier fare. They try to avoid running to the doctor for every little thing. And they’re questioning the medical establishment, which seems to think exotic medications and invasive, sometimes painful procedures are the only answer, even to life’s simplest ills. People are turning to acupuncture, chiropractic, and holistic medicine as preferable alternatives. It is in this climate that ear candling is becoming more popular than ever before.
    • Ear Candling, or Coning as it is also commonly referred to, has been practiced around the world for centuries. Cultures as diverse and far removed as the ancient Egyptians and the Hopi Indians used this technique to help maintain ear health.
    • Many other cultures have used similar methods, and it is evident that it was very early in history when people recognized the need to maintain ear health.
    • In the nineteenth century, the rise of modern medicine in western nations almost eliminated traditional methods of healing and of maintaining health. A great deal of valuable knowledge about many ancient techniques was lost. It is ironic that today many scientists have traveled great distances to meet the healers of 'primitive' cultures to learn their secrets.
    • Modern medical associations across North America (whose members are for the most part not scientists, but tradespeople trained to perform their duties as in any other profession) have lobbied with almost complete success to maintain their current preeminent status as the only health care providers of choice.
    • Despite their relatively successf:" ":pite greater personal financial costs.
    • There is a recognition among these millions of people that the lack of answers, respect for overall well-being, failure to maintain standards of preventative health care versus catastrophic health care (which is much more profitable), and the side effects of many modern medicines that are in some ways worse than the illnesses they treat, mean that we must all take control of our own health.
    • Almost every pharmaceutical company in the world now aggressively promotes its own line of natural health supplements. This is a tacit acceptance of the fact that as in all businesses, when the results are not satisfactory, people vote with their feet.
    • Ear Candling is one of the simplest of the alternative therapies to practice, provided you follow the instructions and use common sense.

    Suggested Use

Supplies needed: scissors, paper plate covered with foil, matches, glass of water, wet paper towel, and skewer.
NEVER endeavor or candle alone. Always use caution with an open flame. Follow these instructions carefully and always use common sense.
Cut an X in the center of the plate big enough for the tapered end of the candle to fit securely through the opening and insert the candle into the hole 2-3 inches. Have the individual to be candled lie on their side. (Pillows are great for getting comfortable) Pull all hair away from the ear and place the tapered end of the candle in the ear. Make sure the candle is slightly tilted. Have your assistant light the other end of the candle and monitor the burning process. The candle must fit snugly in the ear at all times to form a seal to create a vacuum. Notice that a smoke pattern develops at the top of the candle. No smoke will be around the ear of a properly sealed candle. If the smoke pattern changes during the process, or if the tip of the candle gets hot, quickly remove it, and extinguish the flame with the wet paper towel. If more than 4 inches remain, use the skewer to unclog the tip of the candle and continue the process. When the candle burns down to 4 inches, the helper should douse the flame in the water. An ear oil is recommended one hour before shortly after each session.
