Two Degrees Food: Why They Give
Constant hunger weakens the immune system, forces the body to function with insufficient energy to support an active live, and increases vulnerability to disease and infection. These effects are exacerbated in a child, decreasing a child's ability to learn, to grown, to build relationships, to attend school. In fact, a hungry child, just two years old, may be permanently stunted - both physically and mentally.
Childhood hunger encompasses a large of conditions including chronic hunger, moderate malnutrition, severe malnutrition and severe acute malnutrition. In its worst forms, malnutrition can cause commonplace diseases to become deadly. Hunger is the lurking giant behind many of the world's leading killers.
Over 200 million children go to bed hungry every night. Each year, nearly 1 million children die from sever acute malnutrition alone.

now by partnering with organizations that provide relief to children in need everyday, all over the world. They believe they are stronger by relying on the most respected, most trusted, most effective non-profit organizations in the world who know and understand the communities they serve.
Some of the organizations they work with also work toward alleviating the root causes of hunger - which include poverty, climate change, political instability, draught and inadequate infrastructure - and some provide immediate relief in crisis situations. Two Degrees Food believe that both are necessary if they are to help feed families of hungry children in the world.
Whenever possible, Two Degrees donates meals that are produced locally - using local labor and sourcing local ingredients - in the region they are distributed. In this way, they are able to help support local economies.

Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Foods
Medically-formulated to treat sever acute malnutrition (SAM).
Approximately 500 calories in 92 gram sachets.
Made with a peanut paste, vitamins, and minerals.
Ready-to-Eat from package
It takes anywhere from 2 to 3 per day for 4 to 8 weeks to fully rehabilitate a child suffering from SAM.

When co-founders Lauren Walters and Will Hauser encountered hunger in-person while traveling in Africa, they decided to use what they knew best - the power of business - to do something about it. They set a big goal - to help feed the world's hungry children - because they believe it can and should be done.
Childhood hunger is a global problem; children suffer from hunger in Asia, Africa, South America, Europe, and even right here in the United States. Hungry children have too few nutrients -- either from lack of secure access to food or from too much of the wrong foods -- their bodies slow down, learning is inhibited, and the likelihood of living in poverty as an adult is increased. In fact, a hungry child, just two-years old, may be permanently stunted -- both physically and mentally. It is estimated that near a billion children globally suffer from hunger. At Two Degrees, they believe it is possible to help these children.
Malnutrition is the number one killer of children under five in the developing world. Community-based Therapeutic Care (CTC) and Ready-to-Use Foods (RUF) have revolutionized how malnutrition is diagnosed and treated. Treating chronic hunger and undernourishment by providing fortified meals to children through school- based health clinics helps dramatically in the prevention of severe malnutrition. By supporting these effective methods, Two Degrees Food is helping hungry children receive the care they need to live and thrive.
Hunger and malnutrition are diagnosed using weight to height ratios for young children, aged 6 months to 5 years old. The Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) is a measurement used to gauge nutritional status during crisis situations in the absence of a weighing scale and height boards. The MUAC band pictured below depicts the color- coded measuring system.
Two Degrees Approach to Hunger
Two Degrees bars are healthy, all-natural, and gluten free. They are consciously crafted with real fruit, nuts, seeds and heritage grains like chia, quinoa and millet.
Two Degrees makes it simple for their customers to do good. For every bar sold, they give a meal to a hungry child. The support of their customers allows them to fight childhood hunger both domestically and globally.
At Two Degrees, they purchase nutrient rich meals and medically formulated nutrition packs. Whenever possible, these are produced locally in the region they will be distributed -- in this way, a purchase made of one Two Degrees bar also supports local economies. Production partners, like Valid Nutrition, hire local labor and source most ingredients from local farmers.
They have a network of non- profit partners in developing countries. Each of these organizations has dedicated distribution channels for meals through health clinics, schools, and community groups in areas where children are suffering from chronic hunger or malnutrition. By donating one locally produced meal for each Two Degrees bar purchased, Two Degrees Foods helps these organizations to provide needed meals to children.
As of January 2012, Two Degrees have donated regionally produced and under-supplied meals to children in Haiti, Kenya, Malawi and Somalia through Action Against Hunger, IMA World Health, Partners in Health, Relief International and Shining Hope for Communities.
About Two Degrees Food
Will Hauser and Lauren Walters – old friends – decided to start a new kind of food company: one that would make great products and help feed hungry children around the world.
They had similar backgrounds – both were the sons of two doctors and both decided on business careers instead of medicine. Both always believed that business and helping others were completely compatible.
Will, while an undergraduate at Harvard, led Harvard Student Agencies, the largest student-run business in the world, before going to Goldman Sachs. Lauren is an experienced entrepreneur, investor and advisor to companies and non-profits.
Both knew that working to reduce malnutrition would have a lasting impact on the lives of children. While NGOs and generous donors were making a difference, Will and Lauren believed that translating ordinary purchases into specific donations of meals could make an even greater impact on the lives of children.
Meet the Two Degrees Team
The Two Degrees team embodies the same qualities of excellence and compassion inherent in their business model:
- Barr Hogen, their bar guru and product developer, is the former Odwalla Creative Chef and Director of Product Development.
- Paul Tasner, their supply chain senior advisor, is a former Clif Bar and Method Products executive. He is a regular author and lecturer on supply chain sustainability.
- Colin Frolich, their marketing director, comes to us from Starbucks Coffee Company, having led product innovations and seasonal promotions for the brewed coffee and bakery categories.
- Matt Gregory, their director of operations and supply chain, previously worked at industry-leading cookbook publisher Harvard Common Press and is the founder of the food blog Eat With Me.
- Teal Brown, their partnerships director, holds a master in public policy from UC Berkeley and comes to Two Degrees with a background in global development and international policy and a passion for cross-sector collaboration. She has worked for the Aspen Institute, the United Nations Foundation and Innovations for Poverty Action.
- Peter Walters, their campus program director, is a graduate from Trinity College where he created and launched our campus program. He is a former EMT, professional sailor, and has started two social ventures.
- Darr Aley has spent the last 20 years building business-to-business and business-to-consumer technology, software, and internet companies. He recently founded Moms and Jobs, a social enterprise clothing manufacturer that employs mothers in struggling communities.
- Jim Anathan has an extensive background in retail, including the position of President, Chairman of the Executive Committee and Director of Filene’s Basement Corporation, a post that he held for 16 years.
- Rich Levandov has over 25 years of experience as an entrepreneur, operating executive, and venture capitalist in cutting edge early stage technology companies. He is currently a Managing Member of Avalon Ventures.
- Meena Mansharamani is Managing Director of Materne North America. Prior to joining Materne, Meena started her own business, Pup To Go, oversaw innovation at Pepsi-Cola North America and led strategy at PepsiCo.
- Steve Collins, a physician with a doctorate in nutrition, is the founder of Valid Nutrition and Valid International. He has worked with malnourished children in Africa, Asia and Latin America for more than 20 years. Steve is responsible for revolutionizing the treatment of childhood malnutrition with a model of Community-Based Therapeutic Care.
- Cris Genovese, their marketing consultant, is a former marketing manager at PowerBar and the CMO at an eco- friendly packaging company.
- Brock Leach is vice president of mission, strategy and innovation at the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC) and an ordained Unitarian Universalist minister. Prior to seminary, Brock spent 24 years with PepsiCo, having served as President and CEO of its Frito-Lay North America and Tropicana divisions and as Chief Innovation Officer where he was responsible for the company’s overall health and wellness initiative.
- Dan Lewandowski is a former head of Research and Development at General Mills and Program Manager at Pillsbury. He has deep experience in product development, food technology, and ingredient sourcing that spans almost all product types and formats.
- Joia Mukherjee is the Chief Medical Officer of Partners In Health. Joia has been involved in health care access and human rights issues since 1989 in the United States, Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, and the countries of the former Soviet Union. She is a Professor at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health.
- Judith Palfrey is the co-Chair of Global Health Programs at Children’s Hospital, Boston and Professor of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Most recently, she was the Executive Director of Mrs. Obama’s “Let’s Move” Initiative.
- Gus Schumacher is the former Under Secretary of Agriculture for Farm and Foreign Agricultural Services at the USDA. In his role, Gus oversaw the Farm Service Agency, the Foreign Agricultural Service, and the Risk Management Agency. He was also President of the Commodity Credit Corporation.
