    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is a rub?
Any mixture of coarsely ground spices that is made for the purpose of being rubbed on food before it is cooked is considered a spice rub.

    How are spice rubs used?
Spices are rubbed into raw food to form a coating. The food can be marinated in the spice rub for some time for the flavors to incorporate into the food or it can be cooked immediately after it is coated in the rub.

How do I make my Nantucket-Off Shore spice rub into a marinade?
There are few different ways to do this depending on the food you are cooking - here is what they recommend:

    • 2 Tablespoons Nantucket Off-Shore Spice Rub of your choosing
    • 4 Tablespoons olive oil
    • 4 Tablespoons vinegar (Balsamic or Red Wine work best)

    OR

    • The juice of one lime or lemon.
    • For beef, poultry, or pork, they suggest using vinegar; seafood and veggies work best with citrus.
    • Combine all ingredients in a bag or bowl, add 2 to 3 lbs of fish, poultry, beef, or vegetables. Set in your refridgerato r to marinate. How long depends on what you are marinating. Fish and veggies absorb marinades the fastest so no more than 30 to 60 minutes is needed; pork and beef need at least one to two hours to really absorb the flavors but can go overnight if the cut of meat is thicker. Chicken is the easiest to marinade, with flavors developing within the first half hour of marinating and developing further the longer you leave it, so it can be prepared the night before a meal.

Do the rubs work as a seasoning also?
Yes! Their rubs can be used as seasonings in just about any recipe. Soups, stews, pastas stir-frys and sauces you name it! they think Nantucket Off-Shore rubs can add the perfect seasoning to any of your favorite dishes.

What are the benefits of using Nantucket Off-Shore spice rubs?
They think the benefits are endless here's just a few.

    • All of the rubs are Salt Free and Sugar Free
    • Easy to use - just pat the meat, veggies, or whatever you're cooking, and you're done!
    • High Quality - These rubs are crafted from the finest, all-natural herbs in the world.
    • Versatile - Use for grilling and baking, creating marinades, topping popcorn, flavoring sauces….the list is never-ending.
    • *(Rasta Rub Contains sugar - less than 2 grams per serving)

Why a tin for the rubs, wouldn't plastic or glass be more environmentally friendly?
Tins keep the product it's freshest for you and with 20 to 25 uses per tin keeping the spice their freshest is important. The tins also prevent the spices from bleaching, which can happen with see-through spice containers. Plus, they have some ideas on how to re-use them. See below -

I'm done with my rub any ideas for re-using the tin?
Good for you for wanting to recycle!!! Here are some fun ideas they've come up with:

    • Store your lose change or safety pins
    • Dump those pesky extra buttons you don't need until you lose one and can't find them
    • Add a few pennies and shake it up - a fun inexpensive music maker for kids
    • Use outdoors in the summertime as coasters - they make great conversation pieces and save your furniture at the same time!
    • Take it to the beach and use to store collected seashells or sea glass
