Why Avoid Plastic?
Everyday, we do our best to keep their family safe, and that means protecting our health as well as our environment. We exercise, eat right, recycle, it's all in a day's work. Unfortunately, sometimes it’s not as simple as doing just those things. Recently, disturbing news has surfaced about the health and environmental impact of plastics. With plastic being everywhere in our daily lives, it’s important to start reconsidering how and why we use it.

For Your Health
From their dishes and toys to their food packaging, there's a reason to think twice about plastic. Plastics come in numerous varieties, but many of them often contain toxic additives that can influence a plastic’s properties. Color, texture, hardness, these can all be changed to improve performance or reduce cost – even though the additives used might be potentially dangerous.

A commonly used additive is a plasticizer. Plasticizers, such as adipates and phthalates, soften plastics to be used in food packaging, teethers, toys, and many other household products. This becomes an issue when a plastic comes into contact with food. Traces of these chemicals can leach out of the plastic, exposing your family to their harmful effects.

You might have heard media discussion of Bisphenol A (BPA). It’s a toxic chemical additive found in many plastics and epoxy resins that leaches into our food and beverages. In fact, BPA is so common that plastic baby bottles, water bottles, sports equipment, even the coating inside most food and beverage cans have all been found to contain BPA.

BPA and chemicals like it have come under scrutiny from Canada, Europe, and our own Environmental Protection Agency. Canada has already banned the use of BPA in baby bottles, and both the U.S. and Europe are looking at phasing out consumer products with phthalates; BPA and other potentially harmful chemicals are the next to be evaluated.

Why should they be so concerned about these things? Studies have shown that certain additives can cause harmful developmental effects on children, potentially impacting allergies, hormones, metabolism, and more. More and more studies are beginning to show that the convenience of plastic simply isn't worth the risk to our health.

For Your Planet
You want the best for your children, and that means leaving them a clean and safe planet – not just for them, but for their own children and the generation after that. Because of that, it’s also important to consider the environmental impact of plastics. Unlike paper, glass, or wood, plastics aren't biodegradable or easily reusable. That means that a plastic water bottle from today could be in the exact same condition when your grandchildren are born.

Now, consider the number of plastic items consumed by the average family in a week: water bottles, food containers, product packaging, and so on. Just about all of that creates an immense amount of waste with nowhere to go. At best, it's in a landfill, and at worst, it pollutes the ocean or wildlife areas. Either way, it affects our children's lives for today and tomorrow. Right now, just a fraction of all plastic can be recycled – and of that fraction, only a small percentage is actually collected and processed. The choices they make have a giant impact on our planet's future. The good news is that there are alternatives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Stainless Steel?
Safe. Durable. Reusable and recyclable. Not only do LunchBots stainless steel food containers meet these high standards, they also simply look great, make lunch more fun, and food more appetizing.

LunchBots Stainless Steel:

  • Safest Material for food storage
Recent disturbing news about toxic chemicals such as BPA and phthalates - leaching into food stored in plastic is good reason to search for alternative materials for packing lunches. One excellent choice is food containers made of stainless steel, an alloy composed of natural elements. Inert and sanitary, stainless steel poses no health risks, is widely used in the food industry, and will not impart peculiar tastes or smells to your food. Rest assured that when you pack your food in a LunchBot, only the highest quality, food-grade 18/8 stainless steel comes into contact with your food. No linings. No toxins.
  • Durable enough to last a lifetime
More practical and lightweight than breakable glass, stainless steel is virtually indestructible.  that means your LunchBots food containers will last for decades.Plus, rigid and tough LunchBots protect your food in transit. Lunch arrives at school looking just like it did when it left your kitchen counter. Snacks packed for a hike survive being jostled around in your backpack. Meals you bring on your commute are intact at your desk. And when your LunchBots return home, the easy-to-clean and rust- and stain resistant properties of stainless steel ensure these food containers will look great for years to come.
  • 100% reusable, 100% recyclable
You care about leaving your children—and their children’s children—a clean, safe planet. Plastic baggies are neither easily reusable nor biodegradable, and only a small percentage of plastic containers are ever actually recycled. LunchBots food containers, on the other hand, can be refilled over and over. By making the simple switch from plastic to LunchBots, you’ll reduce the amount of waste entering our landfills. And if you add up the cost of disposables, LunchBots will actually save you money. Finally, stainless steel is one of the most recycled materials on earth. Years from now, if you no longer need your LunchBots, you can either pass them down or place them in the recycling bin.

Manufacturing and Materials

Where are LunchBots manufactured?
LunchBots are designed in Northern California and our products are responsibly manufactured in China. For more information about our materials, factory, and independent lab testing.

What materials are LunchBots made from?
LunchBots (Their containers, lids, and dish set) are made from the highest quality Type 304 Stainless Steel. Type 304 is also known as 18/8 stainless steel, which is the same material used to make flatware.

Tell me about the paint on the lids.
The top of the lid is powder coated using a non-VOC finish. The bottom of the lid is not painted and is natural stainless steel.

How do I know LunchBots are safe?
LunchBots have been independently tested at a lab in California to certify that they are made from the highest quality Type 304 (18/8) stainless steel and that they are completely lead-free and cadmium-free. The lab report can be found on their website.

Use and Cleaning

Can LunchBots go in the dishwasher?
Yes, LunchBots are dishwasher safe. They recommend the top rack or hand washing for the lids.

Are LunchBots watertight?
The LunchBots lids fit snug, but they are not watertight. If the containers are going to be tossed around in a backpack, we recommend dry foods only. LunchBots Rounds are watertight.

Can they go in the microwave? Toaster Oven/Oven? Freezer?
Because they are made from metal, LunchBots should not be put in the microwave. Please do not put LunchBots in the oven either because the container will get dangerously hot. LunchBots should not be put in the freezer, however the refrigerator is fine.

Will they keep food warm? Can I store hot food in them?
LunchBots are made from a single layer of stainless steel and are not designed to keep food warm. You can store warm food in LunchBots. They do not recommend that you store hot food in them because the container will get very hot.

Are LunchBots durable? Will they dent, scratch, chip, etc.
Yes, and yes. Stainless steel is extremely durable however, if LunchBots are dropped on a concrete surface, the color on the lids may chip or scratch.

You Can Make A Difference!
At LunchBots, they've dedicated theirselves to creating safe alternatives to plastic products. BPA-free and biodegradable plastics can only address some of the concern -- and it's far from a big-picture solution. Glass, stainless steel, bamboo, and other materials are just as effective and don't have any of plastics’ inherent dangers. By selecting these alternatives, you're making healthier choices for your family and our planet.

They believe that every little change makes a difference. While it may be challenging to live a completely plastic-free lifestyle, they can all make small adjustments that accumulate into a big impact. It can start with your daily routine: try using a stainless steel water bottle, eliminate your plastic sandwich bags, or bring your own container for takeout. It’s that simple. Thank you for supporting their mission to reduce the use of plastic. Don’t forget to check out LunchBots - stainless steel lunch and snack containers that are healthier than plastic and better for the environment.
