6 Natural Antioxidants The antioxidants in Heart to Heart help defend against damage caused by free radicals in your body.
Polyphenols, contained in green and white tea, help fight against free radicals. Phenols in grape seed extract are plant-based antioxidants.
Vitamin E helps protect cells and tissues, while vitamin C helps recharge vitamin E.
Carotenoids like beta carotene (vitamin A) are also free radical fighters.
From Kashi's Heart to Yours At Kashi, the Seven Whole Grain Company, they believe everyone has the power to make positive, healthy lifestyle changes. For over 25 years, it's been their mission to provide great tasting, all natural foods with more heart healthy ingredients to:
Help Support Healthy Cholesterol Since high cholesterol is a major risk factor for heart disease, diets low in saturated fat and cholesterol that include 3 grams of soluble fiber per day from whole grain oats may reduce the risk of heart disease. One serving of Heart to Heart cereal provides 1 gram of soluble fiber. This type of fiber dissolves in water to form a gel-like material and as it passes through the digestive system, it binds with cholesterol, removing it from your body. Good sources of soluble fiber include whole grains like oats, brown rice and barley, beans, peas, fruits and vegetables.
Help Maintain Healthy Arteries Your heart needs healthy arteries to deliver oxygen and vital nutrition to your body. That's why Kashi added nutrients to help neutralize free radicals and help support healthy arteries. Heart to Heart cereal is high in antioxidant vitamins E, C and beta carotene. Natural extracts from green tea, white tea and grape seed are also antioxidants. Plus you'll get 100% Daily value for heart healthy vitamins B6, B12 and folic acid.
Help Promote Healthy Blood Pressure High blood pressure is another major risk factor for heart disease. Sodium is important to the body, but a high sodium diet is associated with hypertension. diets low in sodium may reduce the risk of high blood pressure, a disease associated with many risk factors. That's why they made sure Heart to Heart cereal is a low sodium breakfast choice.
What Sustainability Means To Kashi Their Mantra At Kashi, they dream of a world where everyone embraces natural health. They are passionate and committed to improving the health of people and the planet.
Health isn't a destination; it's a journey. Every little step they take creates a healthier path forward. Kashi believes that when you eat well, you feel well, and do well for yourselves, families, coworkers, communities, and the world. This philosophy builds on their deep roots in natural foods since 1984 and remains Kashi's daily guiding light.
Kashi is constantly evaluating and improving the environmental and social aspects of their ingredient sourcing, product production, packaging, and distribution. They strive to not only minimize their impacts across the value chain, but to create positive impacts and positive change with everything they do, creating a legacy of sustainability and health.
Simply put, Kashi strives to improve the health of people and planet every place they do business.
Project SpArK You have to start somewhere, and when it comes to sustainability, starting at home is a good bet. And that's how it started for Kashi. While they've always been passionate about natural health at Kashi, how this relates to the environment was always kind of "a given" but never fully articulated.
Kashi began to have hallway chats and shared musings over breakfast, and this led to making small changes in how they did things at the office. Kashi implemented a recycling program (which relieved employees from taking home recyclables). Kashi did away with plastic bags in the garbage cans, and set up a composter in their kitchen. Kashi swapped out hand soap and lotion for their favorite natural brands, brought in fair trade, organic coffee and stocked up on mugs and glassware. Bottled water service was replaced with reverse osmosis machines, and they switched their office product supplier to a greener alternative. One thing led to another and their little sparks of ingenuity began to add up. Because they love acronyms as well as double entendres, they named their efforts Project SpArK - Sustaining the Planet And Retaining Kashiness.
As the excitement built around these positive changes, Kashi realized how necessary it was to extend their viewpoint beyond the office. Kashi's products, their packaging, their programs…everything they did as a company should be considered. Only then did they realize how much they were already doing...
Kashi's Products and Packaging Kashi designs their foods to not only be tasty, but to also provide the best all natural ingredients for good health. In doing so, they try to source their ingredients domestically whenever possible. No matter where their ingredients are grown, Kashi ensures that all of their suppliers meet stringent quality and food safety requirements.
All of the paperboard Kashi sources is made from 100% recycled sources, with a minimum of 35% post-consumer content, and is recyclable. Because they are constantly trying to make packaging improvements, their new Kashi U cereal is packaged in a carton that is printed with soy ink and contains 80% post-consumer content.
Kashi's Programs The Three R's have led Kashi to work internally on their products and collaborate with other like-minded companies on their journey to sustainability.
REDUCE Clearly the best package is no package, but admittedly, packaging protects their foods. The next best thing is to reduce the amount of packaging used - something that they are conscious of with every new and existing product. Click here to see what they've done recently with several of their snacks.
REUSE Whenever a product can be put to use again before its disposal, it's a beautiful thing. That's why they entered a partnership with TerraCycle, an eco-friendly innovative company that specializes in "upcycling" repurposed packaging into unique products such as tote bags, notebooks, and much more. How it works: Brigades across the country collect their used Kashi packaging from friends, family and coworkers and then send to TerraCycle. Terracycle repurposes cereal cartons, liners, and bar wrappers into cool upcycled products and also makes a monetary contribution to the charity of the Brigade's choice - they think it's a win-win proposition! So far this year, Kashi brigades from all over the country have sent 202 lbs of used Kashi packaging to TerraCycle for upcycling.
RECYCLE Did you know the U.S. recycles only 32% of all trash? That's why Kashi think it's important to encourage people to recycle and reward those who do. This year they partnered with RecycleBank to make it happen. Right now, for every specially marked Kashi Whole Wheat Biscuits cereal box you recycle, you can earn 15 RecycleBank Points! How it works: As a member of the RecycleBank community, the more you recycle, the more RecycleBank Points you gain. Points are redeemable for valuable Kashi rewards that are exclusive to RecycleBank members. So far this year, their partnership with RecycleBank has helped keep 251 tons of material out of the nation's landfills! Congratulations, RecycleBankers! Updated June 30 2009
Kashi's History They often get asked, how did Kashi get started? Kashi began with a healthy epiphany. Back in 1984, they discovered the goodness of whole grain nutrition and were so passionate about their newfound knowledge, they wanted to share it with others. After mixing grains and seeds for months, they chose the unique blend of Seven Whole Grains and Sesame for its supreme nutritional profile - a vegetarian source of protein and complex carbohydrates that's hearty, satisfying, and energizing.
After considering names such as "Gold'n Grains" and "Graino," they decided on Kashi, a synthesis of "kashruth" or kosher/pure food and "Kushi," the last name of the founders of American Macrobiotics. Later, they discovered that Kashi has international meanings: porridge in Russian, happy in Chinese, and energy in Japanese.
