What is Yerba Mate?
Also known as "South America's green tea," yerba mate is a unique, delicious and nutritious tea made from the leaves of Ilex Paraguariensis, a plant that grows only in sub-tropical South America. Yerba mate was widely used by the indigenous Guarani people for hundreds of years before the Spanish came to South America in the 1500s. The early colonists eagerly adopted Yerba Mate into their daily diet as an invigorating beverage and its use spread far and wide throughout the Continent. Today millions of South Americans drink mate on a daily basis to ensure health and vitality. Mate boosts energy, fights fatigue and balances the body in all its functions.
More About Yerba Mate
From time immemorial, the native people of the forests of South America have used the leaves of the yerba mate bush to make a beverage with superlative healing and energizing powers. Yerba Mate's beneficial qualities were recognized early on by the first European settlers as a way to survive in the jungle. Ever since, its use has spread far and wide because of the energy and nutrition it provides.
La Merced Yerba Mate comes from a family-owned hacienda in northeast Argentina that has been producing Yerba Mate since the 1920s. Their Mate bushes are grown in deep red soil using organic farming techniques, which means soil conservation, zero use of pesticides and herbicides and careful attention to every detail. The final product is the finest quality yerba mate, with a smooth, unsmoked, friendly flavor.

Ways to prepare yerba mate:
Gourd & Bombilla:
If you'd like to enjoy Yerba Mate in the South American way do the following:
- Fill Mate Gourd 2/3 full with loose yerba mate.
- Cover gourd top with hand and turn upside down. Shake so the smaller leaf particles go to the top.
- Pour lukewarm water over the leaves.
- Insert bombilla until it touches the bottom. Keep bombilla in place at all times and do not move, even when sipping!
- Pour hot but never boiled water on leaves and sip infusion through bombilla.
- Sugar or honey may be added as an option over the leaves when sipping mate.
This is the most efficient way of extracting the beneficial properties of yerba mate.
In Summer, try pouring cold lemonade, orange or cranberry juice instead. This is called Terere and is a great way to sip mate when it's hot!
