    Joyva Sesame Tahini 15 oz. (425 g)

Joyva Sesame Tahini is a creamy puree of roasted sesame seeds. Tahini is an all-natural creamy puree of sesame seeds that has a light, nut-like flavor. Because Sesame Tahini contains no emulsifiers or thickeners, it may separate. Sesame Tahini by Joyva is gluten-free, and is also certified by Kof-K Kosher Supervision as kosher parve. This means the Joyva manufacturing facility is spotlessly clean, the ingredients of all products are of the highest quality, and anyone keeping kosher can eat Joyva products.

The year was 1905. The place was a small town in Russia called Kiev. The man was Nathan Radutzky, a simple 22 year old entrepreneur with a recipe and an idea. What he held, was a recipe for one of the oldest known confections in the world. It was eaten by Kings and Titans, and Princes and Sultans. In some parts of the world it was considered a sacred symbol of immortality and life. In other cultures it was thought to promote fertility and sexual response. It also tasted really, really good. That recipe was Halvah.

Halvah is a Turkish confection. It is one of the worlds oldest candies. The earliest references date as far back as the year 3000 B.C. The word halvah means literally 'sweetmeat.' Halvah is also called halva, helva, halawa, halava, helava or halwa, and the ingredients include tahini and sugar. Tahini is created by grinding sesame seeds into a smooth creamy butter. Sesame seeds are rich in calcium, zinc, iron, phosphorous, protein, niacin and lecithin and many B complex vitamins. Halvah contains three basic nutrients; protein and vegetable fat from tahini and carbohydrates from sugar. Halvah provides protein and calories, making it an excellent choice for the beginning of the day or for a backpacking energy source.

The idea was to produce it in the United States. Halvah has been called the Food of The Gods. An ancient Turkish confection, dating back 3000 years was about to be refined, reinterpreted, and reinstated as the food of choice among the eastern European immigrants in the early part of the 20th century. Halvah, which means “sweet meat” in Turkish was going to get a modern twist.

In 1907 the first batch of Halvah was produced on the Lower East Side of Manhattan where you can still buy it today. The Joyva Corporation is still a family run business. It is headquartered in Brooklyn, NY. Over the last nine decades they have developed many candy and specialty food items that have been loved for generations: Jell Rings, Marshmallow Twists, Sesame Crunch, Sesame Tahini, and of course the beloved Halvah..
