Meet Phoebe the Fish!
Phoebe is one of more than 5,000 different kinds of freshwater fish that live in the great Amazon River. The river covers 30% of South America, and it's all surrounded by rainforest. Here, many fish grow as big as nature will allow. Like the arapaima. Phoebe knows one that's 15 feet long! Phoebe is still pretty little, so she has to be smart and quick because there are some scary fish where she lives - like the electric eel and piranha. Phoebe prefers her friend, Freddy the tree frog. He is hiding on the product's box. Can you find him?
Did You Know...
- Most rainforests get more than 80 inches of rain a year.
- Every minute, 28 billion gallons of water flow from the Amazon River into the Atlantic Ocean.
- Once a rainforest is destroyed, it takes 50 to 120 years to come back. Sometimes it never returns.

Omega Fatty Acids
The modification of dietary fat intake can alter the fatty acid composition of membrane structures in the body. Even the fatty acid composition of the heart, which one might think of as a very stable tissue, can be rapidly modified. The fatty acid composition of most membranes adapts to some extent to the type of fat available in the diet. This flexibility is surprising, considering the vital role that membranes play in so many cellular functions. Diet-induced changes in membrane lipid composition support the old adage, “you are what you eat.”
The typical American diet has an average fat intake just under 33% of total calories consumed. This value is well within the range that is considered healthy by the dietary recommended intake (DRI) committee; however, it was further revealed that 25% of the population consumes 35% or more of their total calories from fat. Typically, the American on-the-go diet is high in saturated and trans fatty acids, often referred to as “bad” fat from fast and processed foods like hamburgers, most desserts, French fries, etc. Over time, the consumption of foods that are rich in “bad” fat has been found to promote health risks. However, the diet also provides “good” fat, which must be consumed on a daily basis for general health and well-being.
Monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are dietary fats that have been shown in research to lower the risks associated with certain chronic conditions including the heart, joints, brain and skin. Several examples of MUFAs include palmitoleic acid and oleic acid, which can be found abundantly in olives, olive oil, nuts and avocados – items considered to be the backbone of the heart healthy Mediterranean diet. Several examples of PUFAs include linoleic acid (LA), gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which can be found abundantly in soybean, sunflower, fish, borage, evening primrose and flax seed oils, fish, sardines and walnuts and have been shown in research to be beneficial for heart, joint, brain, skin and menopausal health.
Omega-3 fatty acids consist of the parent compound ALA and its derivatives EPA and DHA, which can be found in ample quantities in fish, sardines, walnuts and flax seed oil. They are essential for the optimal function of every cell in the body; yet, ALA cannot be manufactured internally and must be obtained through the diet and supplementation. ALA is the shortest chain form of omega-3 and is the only form found in plants. EPA and DHA are both precursors for several classes of hormone-like structures known as eicosanoids and docosanoids. Eicosanoids and docosanoids synthesized from EPA and DHA produce the products PGE-3 (prostaglandin), LTB-5 (leukotriene) and TXA-3 (thromboxane), which are primarily responsible for the positive heart and anti-inflammatory properties associated with omega-3 fatty acids. DHA is also the most abundant PUFA in the brain and retina where it comprises 40% of the PUFAs in the brain and 60% of the PUFAs in the retina. Among many other functions In the body, DHA modulates the carrier-mediated transport of choline (methyl donor for the neurotransmitter acetylcholine), glycine (amino acid) and taurine (amino acid derivative) and the response of rhodopsin (pigment that allows for night vision), which is contained in the rod cells of the eye. By incorporating omega-3 fatty acids into the diet, the composition of most membranes will adapt to some extent to the type of fat available, modifying the synthesis of hormone-like substances, thus, aiding in heart, brain and joint health.
Nutrition to the Fifth Power
Bluebonnet Nutrition was founded in 1991 on the basic principle that they offer the cleanest, purest, most natural nutritional supplements offered exclusively through independent natural food retailers. Today, they are proud to say that they still honor this commitment and that their devotion is true and loyal.
The landscape of nutrition is changing rapidly. However, Bluebonnet Nutrition is not simply changing with it. They're leading the way. Since the launch of their company in the heart of Sugar Land, Texas, They've carefully sowed the seeds of success by their unwavering pledge to the five powers of Bluebonnet Nutrition: Nature, Science, Quality, Truth and Knowledge - one power for every petal of the Texas state flower from which they take their name.
A Family Affair
Bluebonnet Nutrition is a family-run, independent company similar to the independent natural product retailers they serve. The members of the Barrows family and the extended Bluebonnet family have been actively involved in the natural products industry for decades with the same business virtue of naturalness, purity, innovation, accessibility, integrity, loyalty and quality. They are driven by their close relationships with natural product retailers, who have knowledgeable staff to lead health-conscious consumers to those products that will specifically address their individual nutritional needs and health concerns. No other retail outlet can provide that level of service and expertise.
An Award-Winning Company
It was because of this commitment to the founding principals upon which the industry was founded that Bluebonnet Nutrition was awarded the first 'Manufacturer of the Year' by Vitamin Retailer in 2006. In fact, Vitamin Retailer Magazine sought input from leading natural product retailers asking them to identify companies in the industry that exemplified the following criteria: leadership, noteworthy/distinctive product line, innovative product development, high-quality manufacturing standards, strong relationship with retailers, community outreach, trade association involvement, reputation, company growth rate, and financial standing. This award acknowledges the strength in the partnership between Bluebonnet and the natural product retailers they serve with a loyalty to the industry that is unrivaled.
They've been honored once again by natural products retailers nationwide as one of the top two supplement lines to receive the coveted 2009 Natural Choice Award from Whole Foods Magazine. In addition, Bluebonnet was awarded the 2009 Best of Supplements Award from Better Nutrition under the heart health category for their Cellular Active? CoQ10 Ubiquinol products. This journey to the top has not been by accident but by design. As a company, they have carefully plotted a path that specifically meets the needs of this industry and their customers. And they are extraordinarily grateful for being acknowledged for that commitment, as well as their dedication to state-of-the-art manufacturing, the environment, ecological preservation, social responsibility, energy conservation, waste reduction and most importantly providing the industry with the highest quality, natural and pure, gluten-free, kosher supplements on the market.
An Unrivaled Quality Value
The fact that Bluebonnet has been recognized once again by their cherished retailers in light of all of the positive efforts happening on their end is reassuring and extraordinarily gratifying. If you are wondering how Bluebonnet has achieved the level of success over their short 20-year history, they believe there are a multitude of reasons. Whether it's selecting the best ingredients the Earth has to offer, or developing pure and unique, cutting-edge formulas based on science, or manufacturing and packaging to the highest eco-friendly and quality standards, or instituting "green" practices throughout their entire operations, or distributing to only natural food retailers, Bluebonnet Nutrition takes pride in every step of the process to guarantee that they deliver the most pure, potent, high-quality natural nutritional supplements available with as little impact on the environment as possible.
So as a consumer of Bluebonnet products, you can be assured that your choice is a wise one that packs the punch on natural quality and value.
