The sun causes skin damage. Regular use of sunscreens over the years may reduce the chance of skin damage, some types of skin cancer, and other harmful effects due to the sun. Vanicream Lip Protectant SPF 30 is a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects Vanicream's skin throughout the UVA spectrum and provides more protection than Vanicream's natural sunburn protection (UVB). While all sunscreens protect Vanicream's skin from the sun's burning UVB rays, Vanicream Lip Protectant SPF 30 contains titanium dioxide, an ingredient that offers additional protection from the UVA rays which may contribute to skin damage and premature aging of the skin.
The Difference Between UVA and UVB
The solar spectrum is divided into ranges defined by wavelengths. UVB rays are present at a range of 290-320 nanometers. UVB are sometimes considered the sun's burning rays, as they are most associated with sunburns. They are also thought to contribute to skin cancers. UVB rays will vary in intensity depending on time of day or time of year. They are strongest between 10am and 4:00pm during the day and between the months of April through October.
UVA rays (320-400 nanometers) are now thought to contribute to everything from sunburns, skin cancers and even photo aging. Unlike UVB rays, UVA rays remain at a relatively stable intensity all year round. They are also thought to penetrate deeper into the skin's layers as opposed to UVB, which do most of its damage on the skin's outer epidermal layers. It is important to note that a sunscreens SPF rating is only indicative of its protection from UVB rays. A sunscreen with an SPF of 30 will provide 30 times your skins normal protection from UVB rays. Always look for a sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum protection from both UVB and UVA rays.

The primary purpose of Pharmaceutical Specialties Inc., the makers of Vanicream, is to make products for people with sensitive skin. They know from the responses of both physicians who recommend their products, and patients that use them, that they have achieved considerable success toward this goal. None-the-less, they know that they will probably never be able to help every person with sensitive skin.
You can be assured that PSI goes to great lengths to select ingredients that are safe and effective, are suitable for customers, and then they continuously test and monitor them for quality. Likewise, their finished products undergo evaluation by their Quality Control and Quality Assurance departments as well as outside testing organizations. They know that allergies are on the rise, and they remain vigilant and will revise their formulas, and will rule-out ingredients as knowledge in the area advances. Clearly, anyone with severe allergies or contact sensitivities with unknown causes should contact their physician to see if a skin test is recommended before using any of their products when an ingredient may be of concern.

"It was suggested by several dermatologists that we start a company to make better products than were commercially available for people with sensitive skin."
From the founders Conrad Thompson and Ed Mansfield
PSI, the manufacturer of Vanicream was founded in 1975. In 1974 we were both pharmacists working in a local hospital. Neither of us had any thoughts of starting a manufacturing company. However, at that time we worked closely with dermatologists and understood the needs of their patients. Because of our extensive experience formulating products, it was suggested by several dermatologists that we start a company to make better products than were commercially available for people with sensitive skin. We investigated this idea and formed Pharmaceutical Specialties, Inc. (PSI) in 1975.
We developed PSI while continuing to work full-time at the hospital. Space was rented in a small building and a few part-time assistants were employed. As word spread about our products, business increased and we moved several times to larger facilities to accommodate our growth. We both retired from the hospital in the mid '90s to manage PSI on a full-time basis.
We are regularly inspected by the FDA and licensed by the Minnesota State Board of Pharmacy as a pharmaceutical manufacturer. Throughout the evolution of PSI, we have been extremely fortunate in obtaining and keeping employees who are dedicated, have great knowledge and skill, ambition, honesty, talent and loyalty. We consider the employees our "PSI family."
We are grateful for the support and loyalty we receive from physicians and pharmacists that recommend our products and the patients who benefit from them. It is our intention to continue to manufacture and develop new products in the same manner that we have in the past 35 years.
