It All Started with Tea Tree Oil

Tea Tree leaves have been used for thousands of years by the indigenous people of New South Wales for their healing properties. In the 1930s and 1940s, the oil was widely acclaimed as a near perfect antiseptic and in Australia, it was used in ammunition factories. In fact, Tea Tree Oil was considered so vital that Tea Tree Oil producers were exempt from military service. However, with the development of synthetic solutions in the 1950s and 1960s, the natural antiseptic was forgotten and Tea Tree Oil production collapsed... this was until Eric White set his mind to bringing the remarkable qualities of this amazing Australian product to the world stage.

The Healing Oil
In 1978, Eric’s step son Christopher Dean was trekking overland through Africa with a group of Australians. Somewhere on this adventure, Christopher contracted a severe infection in his toenail. After five months of trying to get rid of this infection using the knowledge of pharmacists, doctors, and folk medicine from around the world, Christopher was advised by the London School of Tropical Medicine that the infection was incurable and would require surgical removal of the toenail and the infected tissue. Help then arrived from Australia when his brother Michael brought him some precious drops of the Australian Tea Tree Oil that was produced by their step-father, Eric White. Within ten minutes of applying the oil, the intense itching and agonising pain which had caused bleeding all around the feet started to lessen. Within four hours the swelling of the toes and the redness had subsided to a near normal colour. Within four days there was a total remission of all symptoms and the feet were completely healed. Christopher realised his step-father had an extraordinary product on his hands.

FAQs

Can I use Thursday Plantation products range on my children?
Essential Oils: Thursday Plantation advises not to use essential oils on children under 2 years old, and to use undiluted oil on children under 12 years old. This applies for their Essentials, Aromatherapy and Antiseptic & Anti-fungal range as well as for Tea Tree Cold Sore Cream. Skin patch test prior to use if concerned about sensitivity or using the product for the first time. To perform a skin patch test, place 1 drop further up the arm where the child is unable to lick or swallow the product. If any irritation, redness or sensitivity occurs, discontinue use.

All other Thursday Plantation products range are safe to use on children.

Are Thursday Plantation products suitable for all skin types?
Thursday Plantation products are suitable for all skin types. However, if you have specific concern, Thursday Plantation provides different ranges that target specific skin problems, from acne to skin ageing.

Are Thursday Plantation products suitable for my sensitive skin?
Everyone is different and therefore, Thursday Plantation advises to skin patch test products prior to use, especially for their Essential and Aromatherapy oil range. To perform a skin patch test, place 1 drop on the wrist and leave for 24-48 hours. If any sign of redness, itching, or irritation appears, discontinue using the product. For young children, Thursday Plantation recommends placing 1 drop further up the arm where the child is unable to lick or swallow the product.

Are Thursday Plantation products suitable for vegans?
The Thursday Plantation range is suitable for vegans except for Tea Tree Lip Guard, which contains beeswax.

Does Thursday Plantation perform animal testing?
Integria Healthcare, the makers of Thursday Plantation, do not perform animal testing on any Thursday Plantation products.

Why isn't Thursday Plantation a "Choose Cruelty Free" accredited company?
Since 2006 the Thursday Plantation brand now forms part of the Integria Healthcare company portfolio. Cruelty Free is a company accreditation, therefore all products sold by the company have to be reviewed, not just the Thursday Plantation products. Since becoming one company, Integria Healthcare sells over 2000 products and has made the strategic decision not to apply for Cruelty Free accreditation due to the resource allocation required to complete the review.

This decision in no way changes the fact that animal testing is not carried out on Thursday Plantations' products, but merely that they have chosen to no longer seek this accreditation.

Does the Thursday Plantation contain Palm Oil?
Where possible Thursday Plantation chooses to use ingredients derived from coconut, soybean, grapeseed or sunflower oils, however. Some Thursday Plantation products contain palm oil or palm oil derivatives. Where such an ingredient is used, it is sourced from sustainable palm oil plantations. Palm oil derived ingredients are used in Thursday Plantation products to replace synthetic ingredients. Moving forward it is Thursday Plantations' plan to replace even sustainable ingredients with other vegetable based ingredients.

I heard Thursday Plantation was purchased in the past few years. Is that true?
Thursday Plantation has been part of Integria Healthcare since 2006. Integria Healthcare is an Australian operated company which owns Thursday Plantation and other iconic Australian health brands, including Thompson’s, Eagle and Mediherb. Being part of Integria Healthcare is a great opportunity to help Thursday Plantation better deliver against their mission of producing high quality personal care products derived from nature’s oils, available to everyone, everywhere. The Ballina manufacturing facility remains at the heart of the Thursday Plantation production process. Their head offices are located in Brisbane and Sydney.

Are Thursday Plantation products gluten free?
There is no scientific evidence that demonstrates that topical products containing gluten should be  problematic for Coeliacs. Coeliac Queensland states that topical preparations containing gluten will not affect those diagnosed with coeliac disease. If you have Coeliac Disease and would like further reassurance, please call Coeliac Australia (Helpline 1300 458 836) or check with your local GP.

About Thursday Plantation

Sadly, after several years of planting, harvesting and distilling his tea tree in the harsh bush, his health failed. But the trees flourished and demand grew. An unfortunate occurrence for his step-son Christopher Dean helped continue Eric's dream of introducing the power of the plants into homes throughout the world.

In 1978, Christopher Dean was trekking overland through Africa with a group of Australians. Somewhere on this adventure, Christopher contracted a severe infection in his toenail. After 5 months of trying to get rid of this infection using the knowledge of pharmacists and doctors as well as folk medicine and witch doctor recipes from around the world, Christopher was advised by the London School of Tropical Medicine that the infection was incurable.

The only known treatment involved surgical removal of the toenails and the infected tissue, followed by a severe caustic preparation to attempt to inhibit any regrowth.Help arrived from Australia via his brother Michael Dean, who had recently arrived in London on a business trip. Michael had brought some precious drops of Australian Tea Tree Oil, renowned through folklore and from Aboriginal medicine and early scientific discoveries, as an outstanding healing oil. The oil was produced by their step-father, Eric White.

Within ten minutes of applying the oil, the intense itching and agonizing pain which had caused bleeding all around the feet started to lessen. Within 4 hours the swelling of the toes and the redness had subsided to a near normal colour. Within 4 days there was a total remission of all symptoms and the feet were completely healed. Christopher realized his step-father had an extraordinary product on his hands.

Now that Christopher had discovered for himself the unique and remarkable value of Tea Tree Oil, he decided to rejoin his step-father Eric. On phoning Australia to tell Eric about his decision, he found that Eric had suffered a major heart attack and was in hospital, in intensive care with all hope of completing his project doomed.

So, with little more than a handful of clothes, Chris and his wife Lynda moved to the wilds of Bungawalbyn. They had no home, nor any money. Their first house was built from the scrounged remnants of a timber scrap heap and what could be found from the local tip. The plantation was 17 kilometres from the nearest mail service and an equal distance from a telephone. There was no power or running water, and the land was regularly inundated and cut off, sometimes for weeks at a time by the awesome floods of the region. Yet here Christopher could feel the magic in the trees.

Here was the largest and most majestic of the medicinal Tea Trees. Taking the seed and following the careful planning of his step-father, Christopher continued the work Eric had started. And the very first plantation of Australian Melaleuca alternifolia was laid down. The Deans started to produce Tea Tree Oil from a traditional bush cutting method. By now they had realized that only a handful of people really understood the true value of this oil. The Deans became obsessed with the mission of bringing Australian Tea Tree Oil to the world - a safer alternative and a renewable resource.

Driven by this obsession, they started to sell their Tea Tree Oil at local markets. People quickly discovered the remarkable results for psoriasis, sores, eczema and rashes and also everyday problems such as cuts, stings, burns, pimples and vaginal infections. The response was overwhelming.

Recognizing that they couldn't do this alone without funds, and also the importance of creating this product for the whole world, the Deans established the Australian Tea Tree Industry Association and lobbied the government to get involved in supporting research and building up awareness of the wonder and value of Australian Tea Tree Oil.

The Australian government got behind them with agricultural research, followed by detailed scientific studies on the applications of the oil. Thursday Plantation bought degraded cattle and sugar farmlands to establish sustainable and ecologically-sound tea tree production in 1988. The Ballina factory distilled its first oil in 1989 and scientists began work in the Research and Development laboratories in 1990.

The oil was delivered to Los Angeles, Vancouver, Dallas, London and on through Sweden, France, Italy, Hong Kong, Singapore and New Zealand. Within a few short years, 20 countries had come to learn of the remarkable properties of Australian Tea Tree Oil. At the same time tens of millions of trees were now being planted and a magnificent sustainable industry was now underway returning hundreds of millions of trees to the native lands. At last we had begun to reverse the previous 200 years of deforestation of the Tea Tree.

Today, Thursday Plantation is part of Integria Healthcare, a leader in science based natural healthcare. Thursday Plantation products are sold throughout health food stores and pharmacies in Australia and internationally.
