Red clover (Trifolium pratense) is a perennial herb with bright red flowers that grows wild in
meadows throughout Europe and Asia, and is now grown in North America. It is a potent plant source
of isoflavones, phytoestrogens thought to help balance the a woman body during her transition. Two
isoflavones in red clover are genistein and daidzein.
Black cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa) is a perennial herb in the buttercup family. It is native to
eastern North America, where it grows in the woods. It has a long history in folk medicine, among Native
Americans and Europeans who used it for relaxation as well as to help reduce the hot flashes.3,4,5 Used
for centuries in the United States, black cohosh was an official drug in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia from
1820-1926,4,7 and has been used in Europe for 50 years as an herbal medicine.6,7
Black cohosh root contains natural substances called triterpenes, as well as isoflavonoids,
ascorbic acid, beta carotene, butyric acid, calcium, chromium, selenium, salicylic acid, thiamine,
and zinc. Its combination of naturally-occurring essential fatty acids, phytosterols, proteins, vitamins
and minerals likely contribute to its beneficial effects.
