JR Liggett products contain NO Sodium Lauryl Sulfates (SLES)
Chemical name: Sodium Lauryl "ether" Sulfate. An ether chain is added to SLS, and is called a premium agent in cleansers and shampoos. In reality it is very inexpensive, but thickens when Sodium Chloride (salt-NaCl) is added in the formula and products high levels of foam to give the concentrated illusion it is thick, rich, and expensive. Used as a wetting agent in the textile industry, SLES is irritating to scalp and may cause hair loss.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is an anionic detergent. It is used all over the world. SLS is the universal standard used to irritate skin in clinical testing so medical researchers can test ingredients to see how fast the skin heals.
It is commonly found in liquid soaps and shampoos, bubble baths, bath and shower gels, and in most all toothpastes marketed throughout the world. SLS has showed penetration into the eyes, as well as systemic tissues (brain, heart, liver, etc.). SLS also showed long-term retention in tissues. Because SLS and related substances are widely used in many populations on a daily basis in soaps and shampoos, there is an immediate concern relating to the penetration of these chemicals into the eyes and other tissues.
OLD-FASHIONED BAR SHAMPOO
Contains none of the above!
Jojoba Oil is an amazing primary ingredient that we use in our Jojoba & Peppermint Shampoo. Many scalp related problems are caused by a hardened build-up of sebum that clogs the hair follicles and may cause some types of scaling. If this hardened build-up is not removed, it can eventually obstruct the hair follicle's ability to function properly, which can lead to a loss of the hair shaft, and ultimately, death of the follicle. Jojoba rapidly penetrates down to the scalp and hair shaft, and readily loosens and dissolves this hardened build-up. Jojoba Oil leaves the scalp and hair follicles clean and free to continue their normal function.
Jojoba Oil helps promote healing of the skin in many ways. Native Americans have long used jojoba oil to help
heal sores and wounds. It actually discourages the growth of some bacterial and fungal microbes that attack the skin. In addition, the chemical composition of jojoba closely resembles that of the skin’s natural sebum, so it is easily absorbed and rarely causes allergic reactions, even in the most sensitive individuals.
Jojoba oil is actually composed of liquid wax esters rather than oil. The body’s natural sebum also contains wax esters, which act as a sort of natural moisturizer and environmental barrier for the skin. However, wax ester production steadily decreases with age, causing the skin to appear dull and emphasizing wrinkles; a reduced ester content in the skin can also lead to the development of conditions such as psoriasis, dandruff, and rosacea. Jojoba oil can prevent the skin from becoming too oily. Because the structure of jojoba oil so closely resembles natural sebum, it can actually trick the skin into producing less natural sebum, which, unlike jojoba, can clog pores. Jojoba oil may help treat acne, both by reducing sebum production and by protecting the skin from harmful bacteria.
Peppermint Oil is added to stimulate and invigorate the scalp. It is also used to relieve skin irritation, dermatitis, acne and itchiness and also helps to reduce skin redness, where inflammation is present, while at the same time having a cooling action.
Who is JR Liggett?
A number of years ago, after discovering an old New England recipe for this wonderful and unique hair shampoo, JR Liggett began making it. The family fell in love with it, even our dogs. Friends asked if they could try the homemade bar shampoo. So they gave them some.
The amounts they made kept getting larger and larger. Friends always seemed to come back for more. They said things like: "It doesn't irritate my scalp," "I have grey hair and this shampoo doesn't give it a yellow look," "My hair's fuller and feels healthier."
Finally, JR Liggett figured that if the family and friends enjoyed this shampoo so much, there might be others out there who would feel the same way. Since 1985 they have sold hundreds of thousands of bars to people all over the world.
Today, well over a decade from when JR Liggett sold their first bars, they are still getting letters from people who are still excited over having just discovered our shampoo. Now JR Liggett has other products that are just as unique and work well.
