Why is Hydration Especially Important for Kids?
According to the Mayo Clinic staff, children produce more heat and sweat less than adults, and are less likely to drink enough fluids — all of which increase the risk of dehydration, especially when they exercise in hot weather. So by the time your kids are thirsty, they are already past the point of being adequately hydrated.
Our bodies depend on water for survival. Every cell, tissue and organ in your body needs water to function correctly. It makes up more than half our body weight. Our bodies use water to maintain temperature, remove waste and lubricate joints. Hydration is essential for good health. And healthy hydration requires the right combination of minerals, called electrolytes, for water to efficiently enter the cells in every fiber of our bodies.
Loaded with the natural hydrating benefits of coconut water, O.N.E. Kids Coconut Water with Fruit Juice is a great way to prevent dehydration.
The O.N.E. Commitment to Healthy Kids

They educate parents, support protective policies and engage communities to make responsible decisions, simple every day choices and well-informed lifestyle improvements.
Hydration in Children
Active children often get so caught up in their play that they forget to stop and drink. Coconut water is excellent for replacing the electrolytes children lose while playing sports. Coconut water has 15 times more potassium than most sports drinks, but without the high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors and emulsifiers. O.N.E. Coconut Water is an all natural, healthier alternative to sports drinks or sugary sodas.
Hydration is a particular concern for children, because their ability to adjust their body temperature isn’t fully developed and because of their relatively small size; children have a higher surface-to-volume ratio than adults, meaning they absorb heat faster. They also sweat less per unit of body surface area. Thus, children are much less heat tolerant than adults, and this increases their need for hydration.
There’s no question that children love sweet flavors, but the Beverage Guidance Panel points out that the alarming incidence of obesity in the U.S. during the last two decades is due to an increased caloric intake — half of which comes from beverages, mostly sweetened sodas. And sweet beverages (even pure fruit juices) are generally too sweet for proper rehydration. A nutritious, mineral rich, slightly sweet beverage like coconut water is a nice tasty alternative to both chemical-laden sports drinks and concentrated fruit juices.
Research shows that our daily fluid intake behavior (spontaneous drinking) is established during the toddler years. So while they are young, teach your children to enjoy drinking water and natural low-sugar beverages like O.N.E. Coconut Water to keep them healthy throughout their life.
Recommended fluid intake for children:
- 0-6-month-olds — 0.7 liters per day
- 7-12-month-olds — 0.8 liters per day
- 1-3 years old — 1.3 liters per day
- 4-8-year-old kids — 1.7 liters per day
- Adolescents — more than 3 liters per day for males, and 2-2.7 liters per for females
NOTE: One liter is about 34 ounces
Be aware that some school-aged athletes playing sports with weight categories (wrestling, boxing, weight lifting) may try to drop weight by deliberately dehydrating. Some go to extremes, restricting fluid intake, taking laxatives or diuretics or overusing saunas or plastic sweatsuits. This is very dangerous, as the resulting dehydration not only impairs athletic performance, it can result in serious injury, heat stroke, even death.
Hydrating Sick Children with Coconut Water
One of the first heartbreaks of parenthood is realizing that you can’t always make the sickness go away. But here’s what you can do: Help your little one stay properly hydrated before, during and after an illness.
He or she needs to replace fluids and nutrients lost through vomiting, diarrhea or sweating from fever. Many liquids used by moms or recommended by doctors in the past aren’t the best choice for dehydrated kids, as they don’t have the right mix of sugar and salts. They can even make diarrhea worse. Drinks to avoid include soda, ginger ale, tea, fruit juice, gelatin desserts, chicken broth or sports drinks. If your doctor suggests a special drink called an oral rehydration solution (ORS) to treat your child’s dehydration, you may want to ask about natural alternatives.
Coconut water is an effective treatment for mild-to-moderate diarrhea in young children. Mothers in tropical regions have relied on coconut water for centuries to hydrate their children when sick. Plus it tastes better than the bottled pediatric drinks (i.e., Pedialyte), so infants and children will be more likely to drink it without a fuss. Why O.N.E.?
