American Biologics GPC (GlyceroPhosphoCholine) - 60 Vegetarian Capsules
American Biologics GPC or GlyceroPhosphoCholine is an orthomolecular nutrient important for cell-level homeostasis, tissue growth and renewal, organ vitality, and mind-body integration. American Biologics GPC is said to provide unique osmo-protection against toxic buildup inside cells. Research suggests that American Biologics GPC supports metabolic efficiency: enzymes combine GPC specifically with the omega-3 fatty acid DHA to create phospholipids essential to cell membranes. American Biologics GPC is also a highly bioavailable source for both the essential nutrient choline and the ubiquitous chemical transmitter acetylcholine. Double-blind clinical research suggests that GPC boosts attention in healthy youth and counters cognitive decline in middle age. In old age GPC helps revitalize growth hormone, and enables brain-body integration. GPC may also support male fertility and is an important functional constituent of human breast milk.

Impressive Benefits for the Healthy Young
Agents that improve mental performance in the healthy young are practically unknown. Well-controlled trials demonstrate GPC can benefit this population. The drug scopolamine depletes the brain's acetylcholine stores, causing a transitory cognitive impairment similar to those observes in normal aging. This "scopolamine amnesia" is a useful experimental model of memory loss. In the first two double-blind trials, young healthy men and women were started on either a placebo or GPC, then treated with scopolamine or a placebo. GPC significantly improved word recall and attention capacity, and even improved baseline word recall. In the second double-blind trial, subjects were pretreated with GPC, idebenone, or aniracetam. GPC pretreatment significantly protected learning and long-term verbal memory, and performed superior to idebenone and aniracetam. GPC also significantly benefited "working memory", a test of abstract reasoning carried out together with an interfering attentive task.
GPC Enhances Mental Processing at Middle Age
Various physiologic tests indicate GPC improves mental performance at middle age. In a double-blind trial on over-50 subjects with AAMI (age-associated memory impairment), GPC improved the slow wave ("delta") EEG (ElectroEncephaloGraphic) activity. In controlled trials with subjects aged up to 65 years, GPC improved a number of mental processing measures, including reaction time, which is an indicator for age-related cognitive dysfunction. In a trial with middle-aged male outpatients manifesting severe memory problems, GPC benefited overall clinical status, psychometric performance, and central reaction times, and compared against the drug oxiracetam showed longer-lasting benefit. Visual evoked potential (VEP) is another physiologic response linked to cognitive performance. In subjects aged 59-83 with impaired brain circulation, GPC increased VEP amplitude. Also, in healthy subjects GPC enhanced cerebral glucose utilization, suggesting it increases energy production in the brain.
Helps the Elderly Resist Cognitive Deterioration
In 2001, noted researcher Lucilla Parnetti published a meta-analysis of the data from 10 GPC clinical trials that included 1,570 patients with severe cognitive decline. Overall, GPC improved memory, attention, other cognitive measures, and mood. Disorientation, irritability, emotional liability, communication, and indifference to surroundings also were significantly improved. GPC outperformed the nutrient citicoline in three direct comparison trials, and bested the drug oxiracetam in two other trials. In another comparison, GPC performed roughly twice as well as acetylcarnitine. In a large 2002 double-blind trial, GPC benefited all the cognitive measures. The investigators also noted that GPC improved behavior and activities of daily living, factors directly relevant to quality of life for afflicted subjects and their caregivers.
Unmatched for Damage Recovery
GPC has been especially impressive for brain trauma recovery. Four (4) trials with GPC against circulatory brain damage involved 2,804 patients. In all 4 trials GPC was given intramuscularly at 1,000 mg/day for the first month, then orally, 1200 mg/day for 5 months. GPC helped more than 95 percent of the patients. During the first month GPC significantly accelerated recovery from focal neurological deficits, including space-time orientation, degree of consciousness, language, motor capacity, and general wellbeing. The subsequent oral phase of GPC consolidated the improvements. Parnetti together with other investigators concluded GPC offered unique benefits against acute cerebrovascular damage.
Cognitive Damage Following Surgery
Brain damage is seen in almost half of patients following heart surgery. Mood and personality change, cognitive functions disappear, the mind easily fatigues. One double-blind trial with GPC involved 20 subjects who had undergone coronary bypass. One half received GPC intravenously for one month then intramuscularly for 5 months; the other received intravenous placebo for one month then no further treatment. The GPC group displayed marked memory recovery while the placebo group continued to lose function.
GPC Works Through Diverse Mechanisms
Well-absorbed by mouth, GPC has pro-homeostatic benefits for the brain, liver, kidneys, muscle, testes, and endocrine system. GPC works through a variety of mechanisms: First, it provides a unique type of osmotic protection against toxic buildup inside cells. It supports metabolic efficiency: enzymes combine GPC specifically with the omega-3 fatty acid DHA to create super-efficient phospholipids for cell membranes, and GPC is a highly bioavailable source for active choline.
