Microorganisms that inhabit our skin and mucus membranes establish a miniature ecosystem with our bodies to maintain health and well being. Although the microflora ecosystem is generally stable, it is sensitive to certain factors. In such cases, the normal flora may be replaces by toxin-producing or pathogenic bacteria that may be associated with all manner of acute symptoms and/or chronic generative disease. Numerous factors can adversely affect the microflora ecosystem, including:

  1. The use of broad spectrum antibiotics
  2. Dietary factors including meats from animals given antibiotics
  3. Improper fiber intake causing gastrointestinal disturbances
  4. Fruits and vegetables which often contain residues from pesticides and herbicides
  5. Pathogeninc micro organisms- an other environmental factors which adversely affect the microflora

When toxin-producing or pathogenic bacteria inhabit the intestine, wide-ranges of effects occur. Several manifestations of these occurrences are listed below.

Manifestations of Toxin-Producing Bacteria
Digestive disorder: flatulence; bloating; intestinal pain; constipation or diarrhea; colitis
Systemic disorders: asthma; bronchitis; body aches; arthritis
Disturbed senses: taste; smell; vision; hearing impairment

These manifestations correlate closely with problems observed in the condition of poly-systemic chronic candidiasis. The first published report of the healthful effects of L. acidophilus, Bifidus and FOS date back to the early 1900's. Since then, numerous reports have been published concerning the beneficial effects of these microorganisms.

L. acidophilus, L. Bifidus (Bifidus longum), and FOS are all normal inhabitants of the human intestinal tract, and are usually considered for dietary supplementation. The qualities possessed by bacteria used for dietary supplementation are:

  1. They should be normal inhabitants of the host intestine or be capable of adapting to the host intestinal environment (e.g. bile resistance).
  2. They must survive passage into the intestine and be capable of establishing in the intestine, particularly the small intestine where physiological activities associated with digestion and absorption of nutrients would be expected to occur.
  3. They must perform functions that are advantageous to the host.

UAS Laboratories Company Description
UAS Laboratories, Inc., a leading probiotic company, was founded by Dr. S.K. Dash in 1979.  The company manufactures premier probiotics with the super strain DDS-1. It also manufactures other supplements including antioxidants and joint health products. These products are marketed in the United States, Canada, and other countries worldwide. UAS offers finished products, raw materials, private labeling and custom manufacturing.

Dr. Dash became interested in probiotics while working as the director of the Food and Drug Administration for South Dakota from 1973-1979. He found that studies showed probiotics were 97% effective in treating E. coli infections in pigs, an efficacy rate equal to the antibiotics then being used. Building on this research, he started his own company and began to develop probiotics for human use. He also introduced quality control standards to the industry and became the chairman of the National Probiotics Products Committee because of his expertise in probiotics and concerns about the honesty in labeling and quality control. At present, Dr. Dash is the scientific advisor and vice president of the International Probiotic Association.
