Are their bars baked?
No. Their bars are not baked. They cold press them to protect all the precious nutrients.
Do any bars not contain peanuts?
Yes, these bars have no peanuts: California Almond Valley, Niagara Apple Country, Persian Pomegranate Garden, and Go Ontario granola bar.
Their Nova Scotia Blueberry Fields has sprouted flax powder. How is this different than regular flax powder?
They soak the whole grains in a measured amount of water and hold them for a specified period of time at controlled temperatures. The water enters the grain and causes it to germinate. This process causes the starch in the grain to convert to complex sugars, which the body assimilates slowly. This gives you more vitamins, particularly the vitamin B complex.
What are the benefits of agave nectar in Taste of Nature bars?
Agave nectar is composed of 80% fructose, 15% glucose and 5% sucrose. However, the GI level of agave standard is 32. Honey is at 58, cane table sugar at 64. Based on the amount used for the same sweetness, agave syrup has 11% fewer calories than cane sugar, and 40% fewer than honey.
Agave nectar in Taste of Nature bars gives you a sweet tasting snack with a GI level below 55 which is the target for a low GI food. Agave is not refined – it’s the nectar of the agave plant. Agave is the same plant that tequila is made from, but the process is completely different. They can assure you that there is absolutely no alcohol in their fruit and nut bars.
Their bars are low in calories (between 130 and 230 calories per bar) and contain only 6 g to 14 g of sugar. Taste of Nature bars are also low in sodium, and are a good source of energy and fibre, making them a delicious, nutritious on-the-go snack.
Is agave nectar a recognized vegan food product and is it organic certified?
Yes. Agave nectar is not made from any animal, fish or bee product and it is organic certified.
Are all their bars low glycemic?
Eleven of their twelve Taste of Nature bars were clinically tested by the Glycemic Index Laboratories, Inc. for their GI score. The results were phenomenal. Non-GMO Gives You Healthier Snack Bars
Just like they are dedicated to organics, Taste of Nature is also dedicated to using only non–GMO ingredients. In their view, Genetically Modified Organisms have no business in their world’s food chain.
What are GMOs?
Genetically Modified Organism is the most commonly used term referring to the genetic engineering of organisms, including food. “This relatively new science allows DNA from one species to be injected into another species in a laboratory, creating combinations of plant, animal, bacteria and viral genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods. No GM traits in commercial production (sold to farmers) are for increased yields, drought tolerance or nutritional superiority. What is the Certified Vegan logo?
The vegan logo is a registered trademark, similar in nature to the “kosher” mark, for products that do not contain animal products and that have not been tested on animals. Delicious Snack Bars That Are Certified Kosher
Taste of Nature bars are an appetizing part of a kosher diet. The Taste of Nature plant, and any new machinery that comes into the building, are Kosher certified. To maintain this certification, rigorous cleaning procedures are performed after every run for every machine. Amongst other things, maintaining the certification includes unannounced visits by a Rabbi for random checks, to make sure their bars follow the kosher rules.
The word kosher means proper or acceptable, and it has informally entered the English language with that meaning. But kosher laws have their origin in the Bible, and are detailed in the Talmud and the other codes of Jewish traditions. They have been applied throughout the centuries to ever–changing situations, and these rulings, both ancient and modern, govern OU (Orthodox Union) Kosher certification.
You may already be familiar with some of the more well–known requirements, but you may be surprised at the extent of the regulations. The bible lists the basic categories of food items that are not kosher. These include certain animals, fowl and fish (such as pork and rabbit, eagle and owl, catfish and sturgeon), and any shellfish, insect or reptile. In addition, kosher species of meat and fowl must be slaughtered in a prescribed manner, and meat and dairy products may not be manufactured or consumed together.
Why do so many foods require kosher supervision?
For example, shouldn’t cereals and potato chips be inherently kosher since they are not made from meat, fowl, fish or insects? The answer is that all units and subunits in a food item must be kosher as well. So a cereal may be non–kosher because it has raisins which are coated with a non–Kosher, animal–based glycerine. Potato chips can be non–kosher if the vegetable oil used in the fryer has been pasteurized and deodorized on equipment used for tallow production. In fact, equipment used for hot production of non–kosher products may not be used for kosher production without kosherization (a hot purging procedure).

What is a glycemic index? The glycemic index (GI Index) is a property of the carbohydrates in different foods, specifically the blood glucose raising ability of the digestible carbohydrates. It compares carbohydrates on a weight for weight basis in single foods or food items, in the physical state in which they are normally consumed. Oh boy, that was a mouthful! What does it mean in regular English? The glycemic index is the measurement of blood sugar over a period of time after having eaten a food item. Make more sense?
Low GI load foods control blood sugar
What is low blood sugar? Simple sugars and food containing simple sugars (and there are many) tend to spike blood glucose, resulting in a sugar high, followed by a steep decline or sugar low. You can feel this as a spike of energy, followed by a feeling of fatigue. To combat this lack of energy, they eat more food to get that energy high again, and this starts a vicious circle.
Controlling blood sugar is important for everyone, but it is extremely important for diabetics. Foods containing simple sugars are so prominent in their North American diet, that blood sugar related health disorders are reaching near epidemic proportions.
As an example, the Canadian Diabetes Association suggests that, based on a U.S. study, a North American child born in 2000 stands a one in three chance of being diagnosed with diabetes in his or her lifetime. Today, more than 9 million Canadians live with diabetes or pre-diabetes. Approximately 80% of people with diabetes will die as a result of heart disease or stroke and by 2020, it’s estimated that diabetes will cost the Canadian healthcare system $16.9 billion a year.

Perhaps the best way to illustrate this is looking at the Blood Glucose levels of the volunteers after eating white bread compared with the results after eating Taste of Nature bars (see chart below) . The Blood Glucose (mmol/L) (vertical line) measured in time (horizontal line) clearly shows that Taste of Nature bars provide sustained energy without a dramatic sugar spike. The results were measured for 2 hours as illustrated in the chart below. However, if the Blood Glucose levels were monitored beyond the 2 hours Taste of Nature would be expected to continue to provide sustained energy while the white bread result in dramatically reduced energy levels.
