What is Glucosamine Sulfate

Glucosamine sulfate consists of glucosamine, an amino sugar extracted from shellfish skeletons. ("Chitin," the resilient polysaccharide that forms the structural framework of animal shells, is a long-chain polymer consisting of many glucosamine molecules linked together.) The purified glucosamine is then sulfated and stabilized with potassium chloride.

Benefits of Glucosamine Sulfate 750mg

Supplies the Body with Building Material for Cartilage
Cartilage, a “connective tissue,” is composed of cells (chondrocytes), protein fibers (chiefly collagen) and clusters of complex molecules called “proteoglycans.” A proteoglycan consists of a long protein (polypeptide) with many side chains attached to it. (The structure of proteoglycan looks somewhat like a test-tube brush.) The attached side chains are polysaccharides—chiefly chondroitin sulfate and keratin sulfate. Glucosamine is a key component of keratin sulfate. Glucosamine is also a component of hyaluronic acid, another glycosaminoglycan found in cartilage and other connective tissues. Hyaluronic acid forms the backbone for the proteoglycan clusters. Glycosaminoglycans have a strong attraction for water. The water-holding ability of proteoglycan clusters to hold water gives cartilage its strong, sponge-like quality. It also allows nutrients to flow into cartilage and wastes to flow out.

Supports Joint Structure and Function
Glucosamine sulfate is one the most important nutritional supplements for joint health ever developed. Glucosamine sulfate provides significant benefits for both the structure and function of joints. Many years of research have produced unequivocal evidence that glucosamine sulfate supports cartilage metabolism and structure, thereby enhancing healthy joint function. Glucosamine sulfate has been thoroughly researched over the last 35 years. Experimental studies and human clinical trials convincingly demonstrate that orally consumed glucosamine sulfate promotes healthy joint function.
In one large open trial, over 1200 people took oral glucosamine sulfate for periods ranging from 36 to 64 days. 252 physicians participated in this multi-center study. 95% of the subjects experienced support for joint comfort and mobility. The physicians reported “good” results in 59%, and “sufficient” results in 36%. The support lasted for up to three months after the glucosamine sulfate was discontinued. The effectiveness of glucosamine sulfate for joint health has been shown in double-blinded, placebo-controlled research. Although the onset of support for joint comfort is not immediate and builds up over time, by the eighth week comfort scores indicated that glucosamine significantly promoted joint comfort.

Provides Sulfur, the Key Structural Mineral in Cartilage
Sulfur, one of the body's essential structural minerals, is incorporated into the structure of glycosaminoglycans such as chondroitin sulfate and keratin sulfate.

Why Potassium-Stabilized Glucosamine Sulfate is Preferable
In order for glucosamine sulfate to be processed for oral consumption as a supplement, it must be stabilized with either sodium or potassium. Either mineral works for this purpose. Potassium is preferable for numerous reasons; many people are on sodium-restricted diets, and the Standard American Diet tends to be high in sodium and low in potassium. Moreover, studies have found people needing joint support to be low in both salivary potassium and total body potassium.

Doctor's Best Questions & Answers

If allergic to shellfish, is it safe to take Glucosamine Sulfate?
People who are allergic to shellfish are allergic to the MEAT, not to the shells. The meat is not used to create the glucosamine, it is the ground-up shell.

What is the difference between Sulfate vs. sulphate?
The word "sulfate" simply means sulfur combined with something else. "Sulfate" is the correct spelling, although "sulphate" is sometimes used. It is the same thing, spelled either way.

What is the source of your glucosamine?
It comes from the shells of shellfish that live in the ocean. It is purified to remove the meat of the shellfish. The most usual sea creature used is shrimp, never oysters.

Why is the glucosamine in Doctor's Best products sodium-free?
All glucosamine sulfate must be stabilized with either sodium chloride, which is table salt, or potassium chloride. They use only potassium-stabilized glucosamine sulfate, so that you get a little extra potassium instead of more sodium.

Why is there sulfate in the Glucosamine? And is the 120mg of Sulfate part of the 750mg of Glucosamine or is it on top of it?
Even though it is listed separately on the label, the sulfur is part of the glucosamine sulfate and not added on top of it. All glucosamine sulfate contains sulfur. The sulfur content is 16 percent; 750 mg of glucosamine sulfate contains 120 mg of sulfur; 500 mg of glucosamine sulfate contains 80 mg of sulfur.

Will freezing Glucosamine Sulfate extend its shelf life?
Freezing is not recommended for glucosamine sulfate, as this would expose the product to a very moist environment. Glucosamine absorbs moisture very readily, which is why it is necessary to stabilize it with sodium or potassium. If anything, freezing it would likely shorten the shelf life. The best way to store it is in a cool, dry place.

How long would it take for a CAPSULE to dissolve?
Approximately 30-45 minutes. For 2-piece gelatin capsule, the USP standard for maximum dissolution time is 45 minutes. According to one large encapsulator, gelatin capsules typically dissolve in about 30 minutes, but never more than 45 minutes.
Note: Testing dissolution times of capsules and tablets at home using vinegar is not an accurate way to learn what happens to capsules and tablets in your stomach. Because stomach acid is much stronger than vinegar, capsules and tablets dissolve much faster in the stomach than in a glass of water or vinegar. Also, the stomach continually “agitates” the content much like a washing machine does.

I am somewhat confused on how to take the DRB products. On many of the labels the Suggested Adult Use will list something along the lines of: Take 2 capsules daily, but it does not state whether they should be taken together or separately. What is the correct usage?
Unless otherwise specified on the label, the product may be taken together or separately.

Is there a limit to how many vitamins can be taken safely in one day?
While our bodies need vitamins and minerals, like other things, if taken in large amounts they may adversely affect health. Large amounts of anything can be toxic. It is important to follow all label directions and discuss any concerns with your physician.

It seems that information is now out claiming that magnesium stearate is a form of, or implicated in, trans fat, which everyone now regards as being bad. Why does Doctor's Best use magnesium stearate in its products?
Magnesium Stearate is used to work as a lubricant in the formula. Magnesium Stearate is a salt of stearic acid. Stearic acid is a saturated fatty acid. A trans fatty acid (commonly shortened to trans fat) is an unsaturated fatty acid molecule. Stearic acid, being a saturated fatty acid, is not a trans fat. The magnesium stearate used in Doctor’s Best products is vegetable sourced from palm oil.

Since Doctor's Best does not manufacture its supplements, how are the purity and integrity of supplements verified? In addition, how are your prices lower than other brands? Does this mean that quality is being compromised?
Doctor's Best supplements are manufactured in the US at cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practice) certified facilities. All of their manufacturers and suppliers go through their vendor qualification program, which includes inspections and testing, before they agree to work with them. Their finished products have also been tested at the raw material level, in process, and as a finished product to ensure safety and quality. They place the highest importance on safety and quality and do not compromise for the sake of a better price point. The price points are lower because of production size and the overall business structure. They also place great importance on making their supplements available and affordable to those who need them most.

What are the other ingredients and why are they used?
These are used as flow agents and aid in the production to keep the machinery running smoothly and the capsules filling correctly.  Similarly for the croscarmellose sodium, which is cellulose (sourced from the cell walls of green plants), and is used to help disintegrate the tablet in the stomach.

What is HPCL?
HPLC stands for "High Performance Liquid Chromatography." This is an analytical lab testing method that is used to quantify the active ingredients. It is considered to be a very sensitive and accurate test. HPLC testing is a tool recognized as a quality benchmark for herbal extracts

What kind of rice constitutes the rice powder excipient commonly used in several DRB products?
Rice Powder comes from white rice unless otherwise specified on the label.
