About Way Out Wax

Way Out Wax was founded in 1992 with a vision to produce hand-crafted works of art utilizing socially and environmentally responsible business practices. Our products are a reflection of our beautiful natural surroundings and the lifestyles of those who make them, embracing good health and maintaining the balance of nature. We firmly believe in the "Triple Bottom Line" (People, Planet...then, Profit) and strive to create an alternative working atmosphere where creativity, flexibility and respect are given top priority. It is our goal to build lasting friendships with our customers, our community and one another, so feel free to drop us a line if you'd like to connect (or re-connect!).

Since our inception, Way Out Wax has passed through a number of evolutionary stages beginning with dip-your-own psychedelic kaleidoscope candles (a favorite at festivals and in our Burlington, VT store) and our 1995 transition to pure essential oil aromatherapy candles before it was "fashionable." If you'd like to see the friendly faces hard at work in our Vermont factory...Come on in and stay awhile!

Way Out Wax Tealights Purely Peppermint - 4 Pack (4 - 0.6oz)

Way Out Wax Tealights Purely Peppermint are clarifying and stimulating. Way Out Wax Tealights Purely Peppermint will help in cooling emotions and relieving mental fatigue. Way Out Wax Tealights Purely Peppermint are true peppermint essential oil candles. Essential oils are a plant's life force; their pure essence. When intact (the only way you'll find them from Way Out Wax), essential oils provide safe scents and help nurture the connection between humans and the natural world.

Did you know?
Peppermint was considered sacred by the ancient Egyptians, Greek, Hebrews, and Romans.

Way Out Wax has been producing hand-poured, high quality candles for 20 years and remain as committed as ever to socially and environmentally responsible business practices. Their products reflect their beautiful natural surroundings and the lifestyles of the real people who make them; embracing good health and maintaining the balance of nature.

Aromatherapy, Not Aromacology

What is aromatherapy?
To understand what aromatherapy is, you must first realize that the plant is everything. The magic contained in small amounts of essential oils is unique to each botanical and is truly the concentrated "life force" or essence of a plant. The art and science of aromatherapy depends on the ability to deliver a particular plant's essence to an individual: to heal, to alter a mood, to fight infection, etc. Aromatherapy is often identified by smell, but this is only the tip of the iceberg. Numerous studies show that essential oils produce measurable effects when applied topically and perform actions upon the respiratory system even when you can't smell them (experimenters plugged people's noses, and found that the essential oils were just as effective when inhaled through the mouth). The smells associated with essential oils happen to be an enjoyable by-product of very real biochemical interactions between plant essences and the human body.

Aromatherapy is not...
After beginning to understand what aromatherapy is, it is necessary to identify what aromatherapy is not. Aromatherapy is not diluting essential oils with cheaper and stronger smelling synthetic fragrance chemicals. Aromatherapy insists that essential oils be delivered intact, which raises concerns for so-called aromatherapy candles colored with toxic dyes, fragrance chemicals and scent-enhancing polymers and phthalates.

Limitations of Aromacology
Aromacology, in contrast to aromatherapy, is restricted to the olfactory realm. In aromatherapy, the plant is everything. In aromacology, the scent is everything, and to create the scent, one may utilize any means necessary. To create the scent of fresh-baked cookies or a day at the beach, fragrance houses choose from over 5000 aroma chemicals designed to evoke particular aromas.

Therapy Rather Than Simple Recognition
To be fair, aromacology does attempt to touch on an aspect of aromatherapy: the powerful connection between our sense of smell and memory. However, the effects of pure essential oils versus synthetic aromas are quite different. While aromas are a quick way to access memory centers in the brain, we should not confuse triggering a memory with aromatherapy. The "brand new car smell" is instantly recognizable and may bring back memories, though it can hardly be argued that it has any therapeutic value.

Synthetic Fragrances Contain Known Allergens & Irritants
Aromacology, through its use of fragrance chemicals, has a potential to trigger various chemical sensitivities, as fragrance chemicals in combination are more irritating at lower levels than single compounds. Many people find that they are sensitive to "fragranced" products, from laundry detergents to perfumes and personal care products, with symptoms ranging from allergic reactions, rashes, respiratory irritation, headaches and nausea. These reactions are growing increasingly common, due in large part to our bombardment with chemicals in nearly every aspect of daily life.

The Value of Pure Plant Essences
Aromatherapy actually offers relief from the symptoms listed above. Pure essential oils provide completely natural methods of relieving stress, curbing nausea and clearing the mind (among a host of other things!). When unadulterated, essential oils provide safe scents and help maintain the connection between humans and the natural world.

Essential Oils Versus Synthetic Fragrance
At Way Out Wax, They Take This Distinction Very Seriously!

What are essential oils?
Essential oils are obtained through highly labor-intensive processes which extract the vital essence of aromatic plants from the flowers, fruits, sap, seeds or skin of the plant, as well as the bark, leaves, roots, resins or wood of certain trees. These oils are often referred to as the "life force" of plants and contain unique and varied therapeutic properties.

What are synthetic fragrances?
Synthetic Fragrance oils are primarily made from petrochemicals and attempt to duplicate the smell of a specific plant. By dismantling the unique chemical compound of an essential oil, chemists re-assemble a "Frankenstein" fragrance. A 1986 report by the National Academy of Sciences reports that 95 percent of the chemicals used in synthetic fragrances are derived from petroleum and include benzene derivatives, aldehydes and many other known toxins and synthesizers capable of causing cancer, birth defects, central nervous system disorders and allergic reactions.

Why would someone put synthetic fragrance in a candle?
The simple answer is money! It is incredibly cheap to scent a candle artificially, and those scents tend to have a stronger odor with much less oil. In addition to being hazardous to your health, without the complex chemical components of the unadulterated natural essential oil, the aromatherapeutic effects are not present.

What aren't they telling us?
The FDA does not require fragrance manufacturers to disclose the ingredients of synthetic fragrances because these formulas are regarded as "proprietary." Such "proprietary" ingredients commonly include numerous known carcinogens but are protected under the FDA's "trade secret" law.

How harmful are these fragrances?
Even after banning methylene chloride (a known carcinogen that also causes autoimmune disease) in 1989, an EPA study two years later listed the chemical as one of the 20 most common chemicals found in fragrance products. In a 2001 study, the EPA reported that synthetic fragrances were shown to cause "possible mutagenic and genotoxic effects." Synthetic fragrances have also been shown to contain hormone disruptors which are linked to abnormal cell reproduction and may result in tumor growth.

How can I differentiate the "real thing" from misleading claims?
Many companies blend a minimal amount of essential oils with synthetic fragrances, perfumes, chemical enhancers and boosters in an attempt to cut costs and create a stronger, longer lasting odor. "Made with pure essential oils" often translates to an ingredient list with a small percentage of essential oils and a majority of the scent coming from a number of carcinogenic and toxic petrochemicals.

Unless a company discloses that they only use pure essential oils, there is a possibility that instead of an aromatherapeutic candle, you are igniting a chemical cocktail that is anything but healthy.

At Way Out Wax, they are committed to providing you with the cleanest burning candle on the market.
With cotton or hemp wicks and absolutely no candle dyes, it's only natural that they use 100% pure essential oils. Whether you're an amateur aromatherapy fan or a well-versed essential oil aficionado, the folks at Way Out Wax believe you deserve to complement your healthy lifestyle with a healthy candle.

History of Way Out Wax

In the beginning...
Way back in 1992, Jim Rossiter and a few dear friends began making candles under the name Way Out Wax. The original shop in downtown Burlington featured "dip your own" candles as well as the "Kaleidoscope" candle (which was every bit as colorful as the name implies). After selling tie-dyed t-shirts at rock concerts, making a tie-dyed candle was a natural and profitable progression. The Kaleidoscopes and other Tie-Dyed candles grew steadily in popularity and had made quite a name for themselves by 1995 when Jim became increasingly aware that colorful candles aren't in harmony with a healthy lifestyle.

The "A-Ha!" Moment
Candle dyes, though beautiful, are highly toxic and release a number of known toxins and carcinogens into the air while a candle is burning. A company full of people who pride themselves on recycling, carpooling, eating organic food and being environmentally conscious need to apply principles of healthy living to every aspect of their lives! The Kaleidoscopes were bid a fond farewell and a new plan was hatched.

Pure Botanical Essences
Working in conjunction with a certified aromatherapist, Way Out Wax decided to pursue all-natural aromatherapy candles. Already skilled in the mechanics of candle-making thanks to the Kaleidoscope-phase, they now could concentrate on sourcing pure essential oils and the finest, all-natural wax blends. The results were amazing. They launched a line of single scent aromatherapy candles as well as a line of synergistic blends created by their friend and mentor, certified aromatherapist Wendy Dorsey.

Standing Out In Their Industry
Over time, Way Out Wax faced many of the dilemmas facing other environmentally conscious companies. Reducing packaging, recycling cardboard and even wax were just some of the ways they met the challenges inherent in the business world. Soon, Way Out Wax began appearing in natural foods markets across the country, as consumers began to realize that their candles need to match their lifestyles. Using the phrase "It's What's Inside That Counts", Way Out Wax explained to consumers that subtle, natural hues are beautiful and offered alternatives to the candle dyes and synthetic fragrances found in the mainstream candle market.

These Days...
Today, Way Out Wax remains more committed than ever to providing an environmentally friendly candle in an increasingly toxic world. They strive to reduce their ecological footprint while providing an affordable, practical and uncompromised aromatherapy experience. They are also having a lot of fun and enjoying delicious aromas while proving that candles can be both beautiful and completely natural.

Additives Commonly Used in Candles
At Way Out Wax, they're convinced that pure essential oils, 100% biodegradable and natural waxes and unbleached cotton or hemp wicks are the only ingredients necessary for making a GREAT candle. In their minds, everything else that the candle industry uses classifies as an "additive." The chemicals utilized by many candle companies and the "fragrance" industry are unhealthy to work with and unhealthy to burn.

Common hidden ingredients in candles include chemical scent enhancers (or "boosters"), synthetic fragrance chemicals and other additives used to enhance color and to give wax a lustrous finish...the only problem is that they're quite toxic!). Phthalates are a "family of industrial chemicals that are used as plastic softeners or solvents in many household products" and find their way into fragrance recipes, but are rarely disclosed. Many fragranced cosmetics and household products contain these chemicals, which have been shown to damage the liver, the kidneys, the lungs and the reproductive system.

They are firmly committed to disclosing all of their ingredients and believe that in keeping it simple, they are creating healthier products with integrity.

Soy Facts

  • Way Out Wax uses 100% soy wax in all of their container candles (cobalt glass, travel tins and colored votive glass)
  • Their soy wax is 100% pesticide free and GMO-free
  • Soybeans are a renewable resource, grown right here in the United States.
  • Soy wax is a great way to support American farmers

Soy wax myth: "Soy wax is 100% soot free"
Many soy wax candle manufacturers claim that their candles are 100% soot free. Unfortunately, anything that burns releases a minimal amount of hydrocarbons (soot), though this can be greatly reduced by a well-made candle. Using the right wick (no metal!) and keeping it trimmed will help reduce soot. Candle dyes, additives and synthetic fragrances are the primary factors that increase soot and should be avoided (i.e. a soy wax candle made with dyes & perfumes will create more soot than one without those unnecessary ingredients).

Environmental Commitment
From the very beginning, Way Out Wax has been focused on socially and environmentally responsible business practices, realizing that healthy products make for healthy people and a healthy planet. They actively:

  • Recycle
In every stage of manufacturing, they recycle paper, cardboard, aluminum, glass and also collect glass bottles & aluminum cans to supplement their donation fund.
  • Reduce
Resisting industry pressures to "over-package" individual candles, they work to eliminate unnecessary waste (they employ "minimalist packaging" and encourage reuse of all their glass & travel tin containers).
  • Reuse
Their factory reuses packing materials in which they received raw supplies for shipping outbound packages and even the "new" boxes they buy are often second-hand from a company that sources "overruns" and other gently-used boxes. Other items (like empty plastic bags or boxes) are donated to businesses in the community that make use of them.
  • Support Local Environmental Organizations
In addition to their donations to social and educational organizations, they are proud to donate time, resources and candles to environmental groups in their home state of Vermont.
  • Use Earth-Friendly, Completely Natural & Biodegradable Ingredients
From their waxes, to their scents, to their biodegradable corn-plastic pillar wrappers, they work exclusively with environmentally friendly ingredients & processes.
  • Prevent Pollution
by choosing natural ingredients, rather than synthetic alternatives.
  • Meet or Exceed State & Federal Environmental Regulations
and are committed to constantly improving their performance.

They are proud to be members of:

  • Green Products Alliance
  • Co-op America
  • Vermont Business Environmental Partnership
