No. Annie and Rob live and work on their organic farm. It is not open to the public.
IS ANNIE'S A PUBLICLY TRADED COMPANY?
Yes. Annie's became a publicly traded company on March 28, 2012. Their common stock is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol “BNNY.”
WHAT DOES "ORGANIC" MEAN?
Organic refers to the way agricultural products are grown and processed. It includes a system of production, processing, distribution and sales that assures consumers that the products maintain the organic integrity that begins on the farm. Effective October 21, 2002, U.S. organic standards were instituted by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). For the consumer, the goal of the National Organic Standards is to make organic labeling consistent, clarify different categories of organic foods, and provide assurance of product integrity. The standards are expected to expand the marketing of organic products and support the credibility of U.S. organic agriculture. Products with at least 95% organic ingredients can use the USDA Certified Organic seal on packaging. The categories created by the USDA distinguish between the percentage of organic ingredients in food products in the following manner:
- 100% Organic: all content (excluding water and salt) is certified organic
- Organic: at least 95% of content by weight (excluding water and salt) is organic
- Made with Organic: If at least 70% of content is organic the main product panel may display the phrase, "Made with Organic Ingredients" followed by up to three specific ingredients
- Products containing less than 70% organic content: may identify current content only on the product's ingredient list.
WHAT IS "ANNATTO?"
Annatto is a natural plant extract used in tropical American cultures for generations. The annatto tree grows 20 or 30 feet in height and when its seeds are stirred in water, they produce orange annatto dye, also called achiote, used to color foods such as cheese, butter, and mustard. Many cultures use achiote oils and pastes, with their mild flavor and intense color, on meat, fish, and rice.
WHAT IS "NATURAL FLAVOR?"
According to the FDA, natural flavorings are "derived from a spice, fruit or fruit juice, edible yeast, herb, bark, bud, root, leaf or similar plant material, meat, seafood, poultry, egg, milk product...whose significant function in food is flavoring rather than nutritional." Their Pasta Meals and Peace Pasta with Parmesan utilize less than one tenth of one percent of natural flavors and extract. Please know that Annie's never puts any of the top eight allergens under "natural flavors."
WHAT IS "YEAST EXTRACT?"
Yeast Extract is a savory flavoring agent naturally produced by growing, harvesting, and concentrating yeast cells. The yeast self-digests (autolyzes), breaking down the cell walls, and creates a savory base used to formulate a multitude of different flavors.
DOES ANNIE'S USE ARTIFICIAL FLAVORS OR COLORS?
Absolutely not! Their products contain no synthetic preservatives, artificial flavors or artificial colors. All their straight-from-nature ingredients are clearly marked on their labels.
HOW DOES ANNIE'S MAKE COLORED PRODUCTS - LIKE ORANGE MAC & CHEESE OR PINK FRUIT SNACKS?
Annie's uses all-natural colors that come from plants, like purple carrots, beets, and annatto - the seed of a tree that grows in South America. You'll never find anything artificial in Annie's.
ARE THERE ANY HORMONES IN ANNIE'S CHEESE?
Annie’s organic products have always been free of any synthetic hormones, and they have always purchased as much rBST-free milk ingredients as possible for their Natural line. While in the past they were not always able to source enough to fulfill their total needs, consumer demand for rBST-free milk has helped create additional supply.
I AM CONCERNED ABOUT EXCESSIVE AMOUNTS OF ANTIBIOTICS IN THE NATION'S FOOD SUPPLY. WHAT HAS ANNIE'S DONE TO PROTECT THEIR PRODUCTS?
They understand and share your concern about antibiotics in their nation’s food chain. All of the suppliers of the raw materials that go into the Annie's Homegrown products are aware of their mission statement. They ask that they do not supply materials that contain excessive and unnecessary amounts of antibiotics, but the reality is that cows do get sick. When appropriate treatment calls for antibiotics, the animals get them.
They are pleased that in 2011, Annie’s will be able to verify all their milk ingredients from cows not treated with synthetic growth hormones. This marks an important milestone, one they’ve been working towards for many years. They have always recommended their consumers choose organic products if this issue is of importance to them.
HAS THE MILK THAT IS USED IN ANNIE'S PRODUCTS BEEN PASTEURIZED?
Yes, all of the Annie's products use pasteurized milk.
HOW ARE THE COWS TREATED BY THEIR MILK SUPPLIER?
The cows are treated very well. Milk farmers know that a happy cow produces more milk. Heifers are happiest when able to roam free and enjoy the sunshine and open air.
ARE THE MILKING MACHINES USED BY THEIR SUPPLIERS HARMFUL TO THE COWS?
No. These machines are designed to fit comfortably on the cows. A happy cow produces more milk. Milk farmers are very aware of this fact.
WHAT IS ANNIE'S STANCE ON GMOS?
At Annie’s, they believe the best tasting food comes from the simplest ingredients. They strongly support organic and sustainable farming because it is better for consumers, farmers, and the environment. Organic farming eliminates synthetic pesticides from their foods, waterways, and planet; steadily improves soil quality; removes carbon dioxide from the air; improves crop yields; and makes sustainable farming accessible to even the poorest regions of the world. Consumers should have the choice of knowing what’s in their food. GMO ingredients are prevalent, pervasive and hidden in many foods. All GMO ingredients should be labeled as such, so consumers can make a fully informed choice. Annie’s uses only non-GMO ingredients.
They are profoundly concerned about potential harmful effects GMO crops have on the earth's soil, water, and air. Today’s GMO crops have resulted in increased use of chemical herbicides, the rise of super-weeds, significant loss of biodiversity, and all for no sustained increase in crop yields. Additionally, the lack of independent research on long-term effects of GMOs on the environment and human health, is a major concern. To protect consumers and the environment from unforeseen consequences, they believe both thorough independent, and ongoing review of GMO technology is needed and regulatory oversight should err on the side of caution. They also believe far stronger measures must be taken to prevent unintended GMO contamination that threatens organic farming.
Annie's endorses Prop 37, the California ballot initiative to label food products made from genetically engineered ingredients, as well as Just Label It, the national labeling campaign. Additionally, Annie's participates in the Non-GMO project (an independent verification group for best practices for GMO avoidance). They also wrote a letter to the FDA, urging them to require mandatory labeling of genetically modified foods.
DO ANNIE'S PRODUCTS CONTAIN PEANUTS?
Currently, the majority of Annie's products are packaged in peanut and tree nut-free facilities. However, please always refer to actual package labels for the latest ingredient and allergen information.
WHAT IS THE SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM?
They believe that healthy soils and healthy farms are the foundation for healthy foods, which help make healthy people! Therefore, they’re proud to support the next generation of farmers. Through their Sustainable Agriculture Scholarship program, they will award $100,000 in scholarship assistance each year to some very deserving students. This money can be used for tuition, books, and other education expenses.

It all started with Annie
In 1989, Annie Withey co-founded Annie’s Homegrown, Inc. with Andrew Martin with the goal of making a healthy and delicious macaroni and cheese for families. She also wanted show by example that a successful business could also be socially responsible. Annie chose Bernie, her pet rabbit, to be the brand’s “Rabbit of Approval,” and she put her own address and phone number on each box to encourage customers to connect with her.
Today, Annie lives on her certified organic farm in Connecticut with her husband and two daughters where she grows a wide variety of vegetables and flowers for her local co-op and farmer’s market. Annie remains involved in the business, responding to customers and writing the personal letters you’ll find on the back of our boxes. More importantly, she remains the inspiration and corporate conscience for our company and the entire family of Annie’s products.
