Advanced DGL - How it Works
Extracts of licorice, Glycyrrhiza glabra, have strong antioxidant power, support balanced bacteria levels and work with the body’s inflammation response. Most of the licorice extracts sold as supplements have the glycyrrhizinic acid removed, due to concerns over blood pressure levels. Called “deglycyrrhizinated licorice”, it is commonly known as “DGL”, and generally sold as a chewable tablet which provides a very large dose and can have a strong licorice aftertaste.

However, research has shown that DGL does not necessarily need to be chewed, and can in fact be efficacious in a capsule form.2

I always thought DGL had to be chewable? And isn’t this a small dosage of DGL compared to the chewable DGL products?
For some time it was thought that DGL needed to be chewed to be effective. However, new research on the special extract of DGL used in Advanced DGL has found that because it is high in flavonoids and antioxidant activity, it yields more potent effects than standard DLG extracts. Therefore, it provides benefits at a lower dosage: only 300 mg versus the usual 1500 – 3000 mg.

Should Advanced DGL be taken with meals?
In a clinical trial of the specialized DGL in this formula, participants were instructed to take the supplement 20 minutes before eating. However, if you take it a little closer to a mealtime, say about 10 minutes before, you’ll still experience benefits.

Does licorice raise your blood pressure?
Advanced DGL does not contain the substance from licorice that is linked to high blood pressure. There is a compound in licorice called glycyrrhizin, which in very large amounts may increase production of a hormone in the body called aldosterone. This hormone plays a role in sodium and potassium regulation, as well as fluid balance in the body. High levels of aldosterone may indeed raise blood pressure. Some studies have shown that using 20 grams (20,000 mg) of licorice extract on a regular basis can cause high blood pressure and fluid retention. DGL stands for “DE-glycyrrhizinated licorice,” meaning the glycyrrhizin is removed. Therefore, Advanced DGL provides supportive benefits for the stomach and gastrointestinal tract without adverse effects on blood pressure.

What is the difference between Advanced DGL and Gut Soothe?
Advanced DGL just contains deglyccyrrhizinated licorice, to provide support for the mucosal lining, which may be just fine for some people. Gut Soothe contains a higher dose of the licorice, and also provides specific probiotics to support healthy intestinal function and motility.
