Hormones are produced by our endocrine system and control many essential functions in the body. Insulin, a hormone produced by beta cells in the pancreas, has a number of roles including helping to regulate blood glucose levels. The actions of insulin help regulate blood glucose levels through two mechanisms. First, insulin promotes the movement of blood glucose into muscle and fat cells to be used as fuel. Second, insulin stimulates the formation of glycogen, the storage form of glucose, for future energy needs. Glycogen stores are found in liver, muscle, and fat tissues.

Other functions for insulin include promoting the movement of amino acids, the building blocks of proteins, into cells; the stimulation of fat storage; and inhibiting the conversion of non-carbohydrates (fats and proteins) into glucose. Secretion of insulin by the beta cells in the pancreas is regulated by a negative feedback system that is sensitive to blood glucose levels. Beta cells release insulin when levels become elevated. These mechanisms come into play following a meal: insulin increases insulin receptor sensitivity to assist in getting glucose into the cells and it helps to take care of any additional blood glucose by promoting the formation of glycogen.
