What is Arnica Montana?
Arnica montana is a medicine made from the plant of the same name.  The plant has been used for centuries to treat the effects of falls in mountainous regions from the Alps to the Andes.  the medicine, usually referred to simply as "arnica" is nown for its ability to relieve the minor aches, pains, and stiffness in muscles and joints associated with falls, blows, strains, sprains, sports injuries, and over-exercising. What causes the inflammation that results from injury?
The inflammation is the result of a two-step process:

1. Injury of some sort - physical, chemical, or biological - causes an excessive amount of blood to stretch the walls of the capillaries (tiny blood vessels).
2. Fluid and white blood cells escape from the capillaries into the spaces between the cells in the surrounding area.  The swelling which results causes stretching of the tissues and presses on nerve endings causing pain and adding to the stiffness that may follow the injury.

How does Arnica relieve pain and stiffness?
The way in which arnica works is not completely understood.  One explanation is that it increases the flow of blood through the affected capillaries causing the escaped fluids to be absorbed.  The absorption of the escaped fluids makes black-and-blue makrs go away faster and reduces the swelling, relieving the pressure on the nerve endings.  this, in turn, relieves the pain and stiffness.
